Radiohead talk to the press
Colin and Jonny were interviewed on the “Isabelle” radio show on Radio 3fm in the Netherlands, where the Greenwood brothers also played some of their favourite records.
Here’s what they said about the new album: Radiohead recorded 40 songs for the new album. They tried to record as many songs as they could. There’s a different approach for every song. Colin would describe it as a dark record. Colin said: “If you like things like “Exit Music (for a film)”, Talk Show Host” and “Airbag” you will like the new album, because it’s got songs similar to that. And also some experimentation with electronic music as well that we’re sort of getting into.” Isabelle asked what their favourite Radiohead songs are. Jonny said: We have just been rehearsing some of the old songs last week. “Street Spirit” just sounded great. I’ve kinda forgotten what a good song that was. Colin likes “The Tourist and Talk Show Host. I like the slow ones, cause i’m older than Jonny”. The band haven’t decided anything on the new album’s title. They’ve got about 7 titles to chose from.
Colin and Jonny also talked about their upcoming European tour. Radiohead will do their their tour in a big tent. Jonny: “We don’t want to play in those venues that are designed for sport and have Coca Cola adverts everywhere. That’s not what we want to do really” We’ll make our own neutral space that’s got nothing in it and play some concerts like that”. Playing in tents on their tour is not the reason for not playing on the big festivals in Europe this year. Jonny:”There some good festivals and bad ones. We really enjoyed playing Roskilde, Glastonbury and Lowlands. We had some bad experiences in Germany. Colin: “The important reason for not playing Pinkpop is that we’ve already played Glastonbury before the release of Ok Computer and we just don’t repeat what we’ve done before and which is playing a big festival before the release of an album.”
The band also commented on the split-up of the Smashing Pumpkins. Billy Corgan said that one of the reasons of the split was that they don’t want to compete with all the Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys acts. He thinks there’s no room for serious music. Isabelle asked what Jonny and Colin felt about that. Jonny: “It’s a bit heavy isn’t it. I don’t think that there are a lot of people with Britney Spears AND Billy Corgan posters up their walls. Well, Colin does, but…I don’t think he’s in strict competition with Britney Spears”
Audio clips of the interview are available in the multimedia section.
