Vancouver radio station airs unfinished album

Local Vancouver radio station XFM aired some of the new Radiohead tracks leaked on the Internet, saying the buzz it creates is worth risking legal action. Pat Cardinal, station manager and program director at rock station 104.9 XFM, insists any publicity is good publicity in the battle to stay competitive with fans sharing music for free on the Internet.

“This stuff isn’t supposed to be released for three months but it’s all over the Internet and we can’t ignore it,” he said Thursday. “What’s dangerous is if listeners start going online to hear new music, we have to be there no matter what.”

Cardinal posted on the station’s Web site a “cease-and-desist” order from EMI Music Canada, the band’s Canadian label, ordering XFM to stop airing unauthorized Radiohead tracks. [from jam & canada.com]
