E-mail from Warner-Chappell
Just so you all know: The ateaseweb.com song archive might disappear pretty soon. Why? This is the e-mail I got today:
Re: http://www.ateaseweb.com/
Dear Adriaan:
We are writing to you on behalf of Warner Bros. Publications and Warner/Chappell Music. We are the worldwide copyright administrators for Radiohead. Rather than sending you an overblown “legal” letter filled with threatening language, we would simply like to ask you to remove the LYRICS & SONG archive from your website; as their distribution constitutes an infringement of our rights under U.S. Copyright Law. More than that, the availability of these files have a direct impact on our ability to market and sell our musical arrangements and songbooks, and that adversely affects the royalties that we are able to generate and pay to the band.
May we count on your cooperation?
The foregoing is without prejudice to any right, remedy, action, claim or defense otherwise available to us under the circumstances, all of which are expressly reserved.
Sincerely,
WARNER/CHAPPELL MUSIC
& Warner Bros. Publications U.S. Inc.
Well, I know that hosting mp3’s and stuff like that is not the way to go. Although the mp3’s posted on this were all live mp3’s and do not affect sales at all. People who download are just fans who like to get every version of every radiohead song and/or experience the concert from their favourite band as well. Still, I understand that there are some copyright issues.
But now, the nice people (you gotta admit, that was a friendly e-mail) at Warner/Chappell Music want me to take down the full song archive, the back-bone of this site, because they would like to sell those lyrics in songbooks. Well, I’d love to get my hands on an official songbook. But, isn’t this a nice place to read all the news on Radiohead? See what they played only an hour ago at a venue on the other side of the world? Talk about the lyrics and the songs of your favourite band? Get inspired?
Well, even though Colin Greenwood recommended this site on the radio only a couple of days ago, Warner Chappell (who own the rights to practically every Radiohead song), want to take it all down.
At the moment I’m not sure what to do. But i will keep you posted.
Thanks for your time.
Adriaan Pels

In the meantime, here’s an online petition that someone has set-up regarding this issue.
