There’s an interview with Ed O’Brien at TCPalm.com:
We’re not spokespeople, we’re musicians,” said guitarist Ed O’Brien in a telephone interview, expressing audible disdain at the mere idea. “I love the lyrics on this album. I like the sentiment and the feel of them.” Still, he reiterates, “We’re not spokespeople, we’re just musicians.”
S
o how is a Radiohead album made? According to O’Brien, it’s a “communal affair. . . . Thom presents you with fairly stripped-down versions of songs, then you start writing things. (The credit) always ends up referring to Thom, but it’s definitely a collaboration. It’s inclusive. You can put in as much as you want to put in. You throw things into the pot: Some stay, some don’t.”
O’Brien’s initial interest in the guitar wasn’t “a sound thing, it was a visual thing.” In 1978, he saw a poster featuring members of the band The Jam, dressed in black suits and ties playing their instruments in midjump. “There was something about the energy and they looked amazing. I thought, ‘I want to do that, I want to go there.’”
And he has been there and done that. This kind of exposure has placed the band on the cover of nearly every major music magazine in the world, although O’Brien only recognizes a general “acknowledgment of what you do around the world. We’re not aware of fame itself, we’re not that kind of band. I don’t read the press, I don’t watch endless music TV. It doesn’t impact my life.”
Now, the band is looking forward to playing its “own gigs” in its first major U.S. tour in nearly two years.
“It’s a privilege to play here. We have an amazing audience out here. We’re given lots of encouragement, which gives us a license to push things musically,” O’Brien said. “We’re going to play around with the setlist. It should be quite fun. . . . I’m happy to play most of our songs as long as we keep moving, keep it fresh.” [read it in full]
