NEW YORK TIMES FEATURE ON SPLIT SIDES

There’s a feature in New York Times on Merce Cunningham’s dance Split Sides, will have its world premiere at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York, running Tuesday through Saturday.

Jonny Greenwood was also interviewed. Some bits and pieces: Radiohead has never seen the troupe perform live, though the band has seen a few videotaped recordings of past performances. “There’s an exciting spirit about it all,” said Jonny Greenwood, who plays guitar for Radiohead. “No one is sure what to expect.”

Radiohead has taken a different tack, leaving some room for improvisation in the score, so they can respond to what is happening onstage, though it is unclear how much they will be able to see from the orchestra pit. They wanted to use radios, but they aren’t sure what the reception will be like inside the theater, and they haven’t yet added any vocals.

“We’re making different music for this project than we ever have,” Mr. Greenwood said. “It’s a very different thing: you’re backing something up.” Creating a 20-minute piece of music was a creative challenge. “We work in five-minute bursts,” Mr. Greenwood said. “It’s like suddenly getting a much bigger canvas and having to work with it and not panic.”

“We’re by turns anxious and optimistic about it,” he added. “I know that Mr. Cunningham seems to be very keen on happy accidents. I hope it’s a happy one.” At this point, neither band plans to record the music. [read it in full]
