Big Ideas (don’t get any) full band version
Earlier this year ateaseweb.com posted a full band version of Follow me Around. This recording was done by Pawel Osmolski, who used Thom Yorke’s vocals and acoustic guitar and added other instruments himself. The track was immensely popular and even made it to the top of Q Magazine’s playlist.
Now, Pawel gave another unreleased Radiohead track the same treatment: ‘Big Ideas (don’t get any)’ aka ‘Nude’. The song, originally composed way back in 1996 during the OK Computer era is one of the fan’s favourites. Pawel started off with a mix from a live gig recording at Akasaka Blitz, Tokyo (23-01-1998). Pawel: “It was just Thom and his acoustic, so it made things easy in the sense that I could work with it in the same way that I approached Follow Me Around.”
Pawel has recorded these mixes are purely for the fans to enjoy: “Seeing as it seems unlikely that Radiohead would put these tracks out, I took the initiative to try and recreate them from live performances. Follow Me Around started off as just an experiment, so I was really surprised with the reaction it got. It was because of all the encouragement and support from you people that I decided to carry on making more mixes.”
The atease:loophole forum features several of Pawel demo’s. Pawel: “I was originally going to release Big Boots first but I decided to leave that for a bit until I got Big Ideas complete. Thom’s vocals and acoustic guitar weren’t edited to a set-tempo this time round, instead I decided to go with the flow from the performance to give it a more live feel.
The whole mix was produced at my home computer studio using a MIDI/Audio editing suite called Cubase SX2. I used the Native Instruments B4 organ to replicate what Jonny plays throughout the track. I also used my V-Amp Pro effects module for Ed’s rythmic backing and the loud outro section.
I listened mostly to the San Fransisco performance as a basis for recreating the full-band effect, I didn’t want to copy it note for note though, so I added extra bits and changed some of the way the instruments worked together. Mainly the addition of lots more harmonies.”
“If Thom gets round to hearing my mixes of both tracks, I’d be intrigued to know what he thinks of them. Now that Big Ideas is out of the way, I’m going to try and finish Big Boots as soon as possible, then probably move onto some other unreleased tracks in the future. The past couple of months though, I’ve been working considerably hard on putting my own album together.”
Pawel will most likely update the mix a bit. Until then, listen to Pawel’s ‘Big Ideas’ here: www.ateaseweb.com/pawel
