Radiohead Gets Its Kicks

Posted on June 14th, 2006.

Years ago, when an English rock band was touring in North America during the World Cup, odds were not high that its members could find a bar showing even a few, if any, of the games. But luckily for Radiohead, this year’s World Cup is widely available for viewing during the band’s current jaunt, and everybody is having a little extra fun with the competition.

The group and members of its crew drew one team each in a betting pool, with first prize for the Cup winner clocking in at around $360, Radiohead drummer Phil Selway told Jaded Insider last night after the group’s show at New York’s Theatre at Madison Square Garden.

Selway drew Ecuador, which beat Poland 2-0 last Friday. Guitarist Ed O’Brien has Serbia-Montenegro, which already lost 1-0 to the Netherlands and is mired in what he described as the “group of death.” As luck would have it, his main challenger in said group is Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, who drew powerhouse Argentina.

As for England team star David Beckham’s shot on goal that was inadvertently headed by a Paraguay player into his own net (for the lone goal of the game), Selway chuckled, “It was going in anyway…” [thanks Ryan]
