I was born for your magazine

Posted on July 3rd, 2006.

Thom Yorke is on the cover of two Japanese magazines this month. The first is the major music mag Rockin’ On. The cover and inside portraits are all HTTT-era, but the new issue has a new interview with Thom (in Japanese) and several pages on Radiohead’s European tour. In addition, there are some full-spread photos from the European tour and a 2-page review of “The Eraser”.

The other magazine is Aera English. There are new photos of Thom by Yuri Manabe and a one-page interview by Hanako Tabata written in English and Japanese about “The Eraser.” At the end Thom jokes, “I always wanted to ask this, but why do all Japanese interviews ask for messages for fans? You always do this, don’t you? Well, I don’t know too much about what’s going on politically in Japan, so that’s no use, so I would simply like to say that I’m looking forward to going to Japan soon.”

Thom Yorke is also on the cover of the latest issue of the French edition of Rolling Stone magazine. The article inside features several pages on Radiohead’s recent European tour. As well as some quotes from your friendly webmaster. Nice, huh? [thanks Alex]

Aera interview transcript

Q: Why did you choose to release a solo album at this time? A little sudden, isn’t it?
A: It may seem sudden to you, but it took ages for me to make. So for me, I am finally able to release this. We all needed a break, Radiohead was becoming this uncontrollable creature and we needed to step away from that.

Q: Why did you name it “The Eraser”?
A: It seemed to fit with what Stanley Donwood was doing with the album artwork, using cutouts. The eraser is who erases, all the things we want to look away from, the unseen fears.

Q: Did you intentionally try to differentiate this album from other albums?
A: Everything was different, the bigest being that there was no band performance to record. I was making the album with my computer, so staring at the screen all day was definitely different, as was the case with the sound and ideas. So it was a long process to make, but it seemed short.

Q: How do you feel about the album?
A: The songs were the ones chosen to be the best ones, so it’s short, but I like the fact that it’s short. I also like the fact that it was extremely fun to make.

Q: What was the response of the band?
A: Luckily they liked it. Well at least they say they liked it. This is really important to me, you know. I was a little worried about what they would think, so it made me nervous.

Q: Can you please provide a message for Japanese fans:?
A: I always wanted to ask this, but why do all Japanese interviews ask for messages for fans? You always do this, don’t you? Well, I don’t know too much about what’s going on politically in Japan, so that’s no use, so I would simply like to say that I’m looking forward to going to Japan soon.
