Eliza Lumley to release Radiohead cover album
Actress and Singer Eliza Lumley has recorded 10 Radiohead songs, which are soon to be released.
Eliza Lumley will release the album ‘She Talks In Maths’ with Jazzy interpretations of Radiohead songs like ‘Black Star’, ‘Street Spirit’ and ‘How To Dissappear Completely’. These three songs are also available on her MySpace.
As reported two years ago here on At Ease, Eliza Lumley said: “It bothered me that the work I was singing was not the music I listen to; I thought, this can’t be right.” With that in mind, she began turning her attention to Coldplay, Radiohead and the like, on her way toward devising “the Radiohead project,” as she bills her evening of song.
“It was a bit scary, because Radiohead are so popular. They’re so cool and ‘cred’ in that sense, so it was a bit of a sacred cow to go into their work. I found amazing, amazing stuff,” suited to what she calls her “contemporary classical” approach.
Her MySpace bio reads: “In her unique interpretation of 10 Radiohead songs, Eliza Lumley has created a beautiful and surprising blend of the classical and the contemporary. The recordings jump effortlessly from the dreamy Cocteau Twins landscape of ‘Let Down’ to the angular challenge of the Ryuichi Sakamoto inspired ‘How To Disappear Completely’, from the subtle jazz of ‘Black Star’ to the sparse piano of ‘Street Spirit’ which invokes echoes of Michael Nyman. The brave, minimalist approach reveals the angular humanism of Thom Yorke’s achingly reductive world-view. It turns out that in the hands of Eliza Lumley’s pure vocal sound, his lyrics become a fragile tragedy in the key of life that only the epiphany of this setting truly exposes.”
