Stanley Donwood is referred to as the fifth Radiohead member by Candy Collective. Could be a math problem, but as long as 2+2=5, who cares… Anyway, Candy issued its 8th issue with another interview with Stanley and some more artwork on display.
“I didn’t know about Creep, and I had very little idea about Radiohead’s sort of music. I was part of a different subculture at that time; the music I liked was characterised by the repeated emission of repetitive beats, very fast, and danced to in warehouses by an ‘audience’ who had taken a variety of interesting drugs. My artwork at the time was in the form of political flyposters and graffiti on disused buildings. Like I say, another world.
We work together as often as time permits. It’s much easier to work as a pair. When we do artwork individually it’s much harder to work out if it’s good or if it’s shit. By the way, there are only two classifications in art: good, or shit. It’s a handy rule to remember.”
There’s lots more than that. Candy is available as two pdf files. Be warned; they’re both over 40mb. Stanley’s interview is on the second one, but both files are worth checking out. Get them here.
