New Radiohead album release in 2008

Posted on August 15th, 2007.

According to British Teletext Radiohead’s new album won’t be released until early next year.

Teletext: The band’s PR confirmed to us that they have finished recording the follow-up to 2003’s Hail To The Thief, but added: “It isn’t out until 2008.” No news was given for the delay, but it’s believed the band want to iron out a new record deal before its release, and to give time for their next record company to market the album.

Too bad! But I’m sure the wait will be worth it. And by the way’ HTTT was released in 2003, not 2002.

Hey just noticed: 4 years ago, on this date, I attended my only Radiohead show (which I hope was only the first), in Montreal, Aug. 15th 2003! Just wanted to share.

This news sounds ominous, but I hope it isn’t true…I really want a 2007 release, although then again I want the album to be as good as possible…

Half a decade! I know the eraser was out last year, but thats still not authentic Radiohead. And besides waiting this long for an album most fans already heard live. Well at least the majority of the record. Sigh…Whatever still looking foward to it. (bastards)

this is BS. why don’t they just put it free online ?? don’t they have enough money already ? they criticize the modern world, but need a big label, promotion & stuff … that makes no sense

I’m in burden of a Radiohead breakdown, why would they post on their official site “We’re nearly there”?? I can’t take this new news as true till it’s posted in dead air by one of the members. wherever you are Thom, whatever you’re doing, don’t do this to us anymore! you talented bastard…

The report is confirmed in many sources, including Rolling Stone, it is tragic.

Emile
August 16th, 2007

Dear God, I’m left exasperated by the pathetic sense of entitlement that “fans” are evincing here. Radiohead are the artists, Radiohead will put the album out when Radiohead feel it is ready. Anyone who truly respects them would surely respect that. No cast-iron promise was ever made on a 2007 release, and I for one am grateful simply that there will be a further album relatively soon. If people are pissed off with the “delay” I suggest they find their own lyrical insight and musical talent. But given the lack of a basic grasp of the English language displayed in some of these vitriolic comments, that may prove difficult.

JedBartlet
August 16th, 2007

Can’t find a record label, RADIOHEAD? well, release it under your own!!! what a brilliant idea that would be, Thom and Friends!!! do it! now! go ahead! you guys are filthy rich already!!! just release the album now and that’s it!!! stop playing around with our feelings!!

August 16th, 2007

Dammit, dammit, dammit…

You know what they should do in the time between the release of the new album? Give us a fucking live album. I Might Be Wrong was good…but 8 songs just doesn’t cut it…

And “The Eraser” was a great album…though I see it more as a stopgap.

Oh, and “15 Step” is my vote for the first single. Just saying.

I’m stunned by the tone of some of these posts - why do so many people feel like Radiohead owe them something? They are not obliged to release anything at all - they are quite entitled never to release anything ever again. If i was Thom Yorke reading this nonsense i would probably opt to hold off releasing the record until 2009. Just to teach you all a lesson.

“Why are Radiohead allowed to do what they want rather than what I want?”

Just summing up the comments for late comers.

I’ve followed Radiohead since they began playing in pubs such as the Joiners in Southampton, pre Pablo Honey days. I’m just glad they still want to make music together :-)

Idiots!!! radiohead is not some musical slave that has to submit to all ur demands.. u dont own them… its a band get it.. reality? … Im a bit curious about the label issue and wether its gonna be a big time corporate label or something actually decent …. but they are big responsible ppl and can make that decision themselves. what i or anyone else thinks is a dumb subject
I think in general i tempt to like bands or ppl or co workers etc whom are aweare of the consiquences of thier actions and whwat they promote in their lifestyle and what they give out but it is never my job to tell them what they can do.. i can only point out what I think ….

August 17th, 2007

You may not like it…but it’s just my opinion based on what I’ve learned in the industry.

Those of you saying that Radiohead has enough money and should just release the record on their own obviously don’t understand the distribution system. Radiohead doesn’t need a record label in the traditional sense as they have already recorded the record, mixed it and presumably mastered it on their own with their own money. What they need is a pressing and distribution deal to get the record into stores.

When you’re as huge as they are trying to get CDs into stores all around the world is a headache and they and their management realize that they need someone with the right relationships to do it for them (i.e. a label). Though they’ve sold a shit load of CDs in their day, the royalties that they receive after recoupment aren’t nearly as much as you think they are (especially divided by 5) and though digital sales are on the rise, they currenlty only account for 2-8% of the marketplace. Normally it takes a year to work a record after it’s been finished (marketing, distribution, servicing radio, etc.) so just be glad that Radiohead are successful enough to cut that time down to 5 or 6 months because of their proven fanbase. Besides that, Christmas is the worst time to release a new CD so waiting for the 1st quarter of 2008 just makes the most sense.

As for them taking the personal time…don’t you think they’ve earned it? They’re in their 40s with families and wanted to take time off. Just be glad that they’re coming back. I want a new record and subsequent tour from them as much as the next fan, but we’ll just have to be patient and wait.

People have a right to complain, so to all the Radiohead ass kissers who are saying “be greatful that they’re still cranking out music,” you’re missing the point. If indeed the reports are true and Radiohead are awaiting a record company to offer them a contract, well, that’s irritating to hear considering all the bravado Thom Yorke has been giving it about “sticking it” to the record industry and that he was entertaining alternative methods of releasing the album so that he wouldn’t have to be dependant on the “old school” method of the music industry. It’s the hypocrasy that gets me pissed off here. And this is what happens when a group makes an album without having to meet deadlines and whatnot. In the end Radiohead are their own worst enemies. This record has been in the works for how bloody long now? Two years? They’ve given themselves waaaaay to much time to live in their own universe and tinker and re-tinker with songs over and over again. That’s a danger every artist has when they create music, or art or literature, if they’re left alone with it for too long once its initially done they’ll keep tinkering with it ad nauseum, and may even wind up ruining their art because in their heads its never good enough. But on the same token, I’m not suprised this happened. Thom was looking to do something different, but other band members (particularly Johnny liked and wanted to be working under a record contract because it established a schedule that they would have had to adhere to. Which in turn would get the album out in a timely fashion. I guess Radiohead had a vote and as a group they voted to get a record contract. The crappy thing is they shoulda just got one first and then made the album as opposed to the other way around. I’m all for Radiohead bucking the system and being unconventional, but in this case its the fans who got dicked over having to wait YET AGAIN for the album to come out in 2008. It better be January fellas, cuz this is just ridiculous. They don’t owe us anything? Well, as long as they’re spending a bucket load of money to make music, that means they have an intended audience in mind, thus, they do owe their fans music, that’s their job. So I’m tired of reading “they don’t owe us anything.” If they don’t, well then they should screw the music industry all together, get 9 to 5 jobs and get together on the weekends and jam in someone’s basemtn or garage, until that happens they DO owe their fans music. sheesh

Paul
August 20th, 2007

Paul, I can understand you’re a fan like me. But that’s not really mean they must release something within 2-3 years each time they make an album. If they’re good to have so much time between their records, nothing is wrong. We’re not their editors. We’re the audience. Stop.

molonovo
August 20th, 2007

Has everyone forgot that none of the band or band management have confirmed this, and if you go on Dead Air Space, its says ‘Back In September’ surely if this news is true they wouldn’t have left it like that on their own blog !
Until they tell us what’s happening themselves and confirm any of this, I refuse to believe any of it.
Let’s wait til the actual month of September everyone.

The Beatles and Stones put out about 50 great albums in ten years. The best band of our generation takes FIVE YEARS between albums?! I love Radiohead, but that just blows, any way you cut it. In fact, I no longer compare Radiohead to the Beatles and Stones. They were overflowing with great tunes. Heck, with FIVE YEARS, I think I could write a hit or two.

What you guys have to accept its that bands move on, don’t compare… they sing about
experinced that are curerntly going on,
if u want another O.K Computer, forget it.
if your a The Bends Fan… that’s done already why
re-try that concept…
Most bands fail cause they saound to similar to their previous CD/Record whatever you call it…
Now days the only bands that survive are the ones
who re-invent themselves every album…

Radiohead, you guys aren’t Peter Gabriel no matter how long it takes you to release records. And to all the sheep saying we aren’t owed anything, well its that kind of mentality, the individualistic over the individualist that has resulted in our globe being a very indifferent, cold one. If we felt like we were owed, we’d be more fucking passionate about , well just about everything. So people telling me to get an education, (thanks, have one,) or get a new band to listen to, (thanks, have one, Arcade Fire are quite lovely.) I dunno people, wake the hell up and stop allowing the world to dick you around.
