Radiohead announce new album: ‘In Rainbows’

Posted on October 1st, 2007.

Radiohead have just announced the release of their new album on the band’s ‘Dead Air Space’. The album is called ‘In Rainbows’ and it’s out in ten days. The tracklisting includes most of the rumoured tracks.

The announcement was made by Jonny Greenwood at Radiohead.com, shortly after midnight (UK time). The band’s seventh album is available for download from the album website www.inrainbows.com, starting October 10th. The CD version, ‘DISCBOX’ is actually a double album and will be shipped around December 3rd. Both versions are now available for pre-order.

The album download automatically comes with this pack. You can download the file digitally from the 10th October 2007. Discboxes are being made to order and are priced at £40.00 including postage. Shipping will begin on or before 3rd December 2007.

Mysteriously enough, there isn’t a price listed for the download. So you can actually enter what you think it’s worth.

I think it’s awesome how such an artistic and successful band could still take a great deal of joy out of playing a huge prank on their fans. They had us all absolutely convinced (and perturbed) that it was still several months away and then, suddenly, this. So great.

Also, a double album?!? And Reckoner, Up on the Ladder, and Last Flowers ALL making it!!!??? You have got to be kidding me.

this is rediculous, has anyone talked about how they don’t have a record company for this? This is one of the first times a band just puts out an album on their own, completely disregarding record companies. This is amazing, a whole new turn in music. This is just a kick in the jaw for all of the record companies. It’s so exciting.

If only there were an in between option. I want to get all the songs, but don’t really need the vinyl, as cool as that would be…seems like they’re kind of taking advantage of all the hardcore fans who will jump on that “discbox” thing no matter what it costs.

Rob

this makes you want to jump for joy. 80 dollars is well worth it, you get 2 cds, 2 vinyl records, artwork, and the love of RADIOHEAD.

Radiohead have always had a knack of surprising us – right from the days in the pubs when they’d play Creep over and over, through that Salamanca performance when they asked us to construct parts of the setlist, and now this.

Radiohead, you are God’s gift.

All is well, but that title? And the artwork? Where is Stanley???

I thought it was a very sick joke at first…

Roy
October 1st, 2007

I’m glad the Time article points out the reference to Prince, but I think they missed the point. He used a similar tactic to make his album, Musicology, seem more statistically lucrative by giving free copies out with concert ticket sales, which were included in Billboard’s album sales charts. This idea is even better! (An album that costs whatever you want? Who wouldn’t buy it?)They could sell billions of copies of this album! :P Genius. I’m so psyched! Haha… they’ll have to come up with a new and rare precious metal to denote such HIGH album sales.

Andrew
October 1st, 2007

I think Radiohead are doing some monumental here, but some people say if they had Radiohead’s money, they wouldn’t care about sales either. There’s a poll on pollsb.com about this new Radiohead move, check it out.

Damn you, Radiohead!

OK just kidding. I don’t know if this is genius or just really stupid. I say it’s genius.
Though the Discbox really is quite expensive I’m definitely gonna buy it! Now I’m just waiting for my father to come home, I got no credit card, he does :)
Damn… what if it is sold out by the time he arrives?

The thing that amazes me the most, is the fact that they play this joke on us for a couple of days, and then, suddenly I see the fucking headline… Yay! And pay whatever you want for the downloads? Seriously, I really hope that no-one gives less than 10£. If I weren’t buying the Discbox, I’d pay a lot for the downloads.

I am pleased to hear the news and have just pre-ordered the download but the obstacle for me was how much do i pay? And i saw the price for the discbox £40!!!! So why pay alot for the download when i will definitley be buying the discbox in the end anyway.

Those guys certainly know how to conduct business.

Leigh
October 1st, 2007

I agree with Roy up above – what’s with the title and artwork? I hate that ultra lo-fi, sloppy aesthetic. It’s been done. And it doesn’t seem to have any connection to the artwork tidbits previously associated with the album (on deadairspace). Ah well…I guess the monumentally impressive artwork of the past 4 albums will have to be enough!

Still, new album with (essentially) 18 tracks, and the whole way in which they’re going about this is a lot to get excited about. Recognizing that their album will be downloaded for free anyway, and simply cutting out the middle man…i love this band.

Johnny
October 1st, 2007

First of all: Juhhhhuuuu!!! New album!!!!
But this is more than just a new album. It gives music a new direction.
On one side it’s really great. Radiohead shows the record-industry, who is more powerful.
On the other side it’s dangerous for all the young bands. They need the support of a label and a label has to make money with big bands like Radiohead to finance the new ones. It will be interesting to see, how this whole thing will develop.

Me likes the artwork (as far as seen). And to anyone who aks, why the Disc-Box takes so long to wait for, I think that´s the best part of the whole plan! You´ll get the “normal” ten album-tracks as early as anyone who payed as much as they wanted for the same download. And if you have begun to love the first part, you get the second on top with lots of gimmicks! GReat! I think the Disc-Box is the thing they really want to present their music like, but let´s face it, anyone who´s not a fan hardly can take a double-album, no matter what band! And since they have no label to share the costs, I guess the price for the Disc-Box is pretty much in the range of the pure production costs. And it will be interesting to see, how much the average downloader will pay for the pure music, the pure information without any extras. I´m not sure, but I guess, they couldn´t cover their costs if they would just put it on the internet, so it´s no option for bands that haven´t got a status like that so far. But maybe it kick-starts something. Anyways, I think they got balls to trade in their artistical and financial credits for such an event, no matter how huge they might be! Luvem

So there is a digital-download for a price you suggest .. plus there is the disc-box which if you buy through pre-order you get the digital download anyway (with 2 cds, 2 vinyl, booklet etc.)? And it’s not going to be available in the shops?! Right?

Not that I’m complaining. It’s just all a bit confusing at the moment. Sounds fair enough though. Just the price is, wow! Haha. 40pounds equals $92 Australia .. 0_0 But i’d suppose it wouldn’t be so expensive if it didn’t need to be, it’s a great package.

It’s a good experiment to see if people will actually pay willingly for downloaded music. I’m kinda confused with this announce.
Great move to propose the new album for download but why the second CD is only for the box ?
Will there be at least a cheaper version of the box without the vynils ?

Craig
October 2nd, 2007

Craig, you might be right. It would be sad, but at least far better then putting out a “Best Of” double and a “Box Set” of 1989-Homerecording-Versions of unreleased tracks. October 2nd, 2007

The disc-box comes with the double vinyl and double CD right? I could be missing something but i don’t understand that. Presumably the vinyl and cd have the same thing on them and they are being made to order so, why?

Here in Australia we have a radio station called Triple J, they have a current affairs program called Hack. Today they had a story about this release, specifically the name-your-price download. They spoke to the manager of John Butler (anyone heard of him?). Basically he was saying that it more or less further de-personalizes music but approves of the decision for people to pay for what they’d otherwise just download for free. Presumably people will be more willing to pay a moderate price than download it for free. Interesting.

I hope no self respecting Radiohead fan, should they just go for the download, is going to pay nothing for it. At least pay a couple of quid! :D

radiohead are the best band around, but theyre not going to lose money by effectively giving the album away. the albums a double disk, the first half is being released for download. if you want to hear the second disc, youre still paying for a double disk when its released, so theyll make whatever money people “donate”, and when people buy the diskbox or wait till it comes out on cd, theyre still paying for disk one, so it isnt such a good deal.

i’ve read so many things about this now, i’ve kind of got bored of it all.
i don’t think it will change the industry that much, in the short term.
no other band are in the position radiohead are in. and no other band have the balls.
yeah it’s amazing what they’re doing but for the short term at least i can’t see the change the media is expecting.
i think radiohead are showing the industry that they’re not needed.
though there are people out in the world won’t pay for music, there are those who will if the opportunity is given.

this is about musicians giving their music to us without being tied to a contract and charging a price they feel is right.
in the future i can see bands offering albums, eps and singles as downloads and there being a set cost instead of the way radiohead are doing it but not for a few years yet.
i think this is going to show which bands are in it for the money and who’s in it for ‘the music’.

i think most people have been paying for the download, i haven’t but i also ordered the discbox.
my reason for this is i literally couldn’t afford to do so(student).
should i be as guilty as i feel?

Is there a post anywhere about the download format? Is it ogged(.ogg) or generic(.mp3)? Can we download the album art and lyrics too? Will they provide a choice of download format?

True high quality downloads would really break the barrier…

@Craig, I’m certain this is a no guilt necessary (as well as no donation necessary) partnership with fans; they were starving students, too :)
