NIN, Oasis, Jamiroquai to do a Radiohead

Posted on October 10th, 2007.

On the eve of Radiohead’s online release of ‘In Rainbows’, it looks like more artists, that are currently without a label, will be following Radiohead’s example.

Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor has announced that he leaves his label for independence. Suggesting that he’ll continue his musical career in the same vein as Radiohead, Reznor announced that he has left Interscope following a long period of enmity. He previously encouraged fans to download or steal his latest album ‘Year Zero’ and even leaked tracks prior to release.

According to The Telegraph, Jamiroquai and Oasis, two major names that are not contracted to a record labels, are rumoured to be considering following Radiohead by offering work for free, according to industry sources.

Radiohead refuse to reveal how many fans have pre-ordered their seventh album, In Rainbows, but figures from HitWise show the move pushed the site up from number 43 to the top slot for music websites in the UK.

Google say that searches for Radiohead have increased tenfold this week as fans log on to the band’s site, with the majority – according to the band’s spokesman – spurning the opportunity to download the album for as little as 45 pence and instead signing up for the £40 box set, which includes vinyl records, CD and artwork.

The Charlatans are also offering fans their next album completely for free if they visit the site of radio station XFM.

The performers that give away their music for free are expected to make their money from sales of concert tickets and merchandise.

“They’ll all be thinking about it now,” said Stuart Clarke at Music Week. “Any big name that is out of contract such as Jamiroquai and Oasis will now see it as an option.”

I believe NIN was actually ahead of Radiohead on this one.

I got the download and am pleasantly suprised of its beauty and great decision to leave the crushing and crippling effects music companies have on the talents that musicians want to portray of their own music. GOOD FOR YOU RADIOHEAD!!! We as fans must support this type of way that will excite great talents who want to make their own form of music. I bought the boxset and will continue to support this way of “Business”. I love you you Radiohead and thank you for giving me an outlet to praise the Lord and to take my mind off the pains of life and replace them with goodness and grace of your beautiful voice and the talent of the band. Viva La Radiohead!!!

NIN’s strategy was completely different, as they released the album on their label anyways and it still sold well. Radiohead has released the album WITHOUT A LABEL. still, NIN isn’t Radiohead. not by a LONG SHOT.

NIN/Trent Reznor had made it clear a LONG time ago that he was going to go independent and self-release his music. Definitely before any mention of Radiohead. The title of the news story is incredibly inaccurate, and unfair to NIN.

I second that comment from Ethos14. I also heard Trent years ago wanting to go this way…just didn’t have the chance until now. FrankLives, as much as I like Radiohead, they could have “stolen” the idea (as other minor players in this business have done also before, having their fans chose the price online without a label)…but who cares, whoever it is, it’s all about the trend and way to go and not about the creation of the “idea”…and by the way NIN is no Radiohead….and Radiohead is no NIN….I love them both (in my top 3 bands) in their own way!

I love Jamiroquai! His music is so inspiring and so awesome! It reminds me of Eric Solomon- you should check him out! http://www.EricSolomonMusic.com. They have similar styles and vocal techniques. Virtual Reality for life!
