Radiohead in talks with iTunes for ‘In Rainbows’

Posted on December 7th, 2007.

Radiohead’s camp is in talks with iTunes Music Store for the release of “In Rainbows”.  The EMI catalog remains a notable omission from the world’s leading download store because of the band’s assertion that its albums remain complete.

On the other hand, iTunes’ successful model allows customers to unbundle albums, or pick and chose individual tracks. Radiohead does, however, have a handful of songs on iTunes that were included on various soundtracks or compilations.

Bryce Edge, of the band’s management team, Courtyard Management, tells Billboard.biz that talks are ongoing with iTunes.

A deal with Apple Computer’s download store would represent a massive breakthrough on a number of levels, and one which apparently would require a shift in position from one of the parties. An Apple spokesman declined to comment.

U.K. retailer 7digital scored a coup in September when it added full-album Radiohead downloads to its offering. The 7digital service does not sell the band’s individual album tracks for download.

iTunes should man up and just allow Radiohead to put the album as a whole, so that people would have to buy the whole album, not just a couple of songs…and plus, to really get a feel for any RH album, u have to listen to it in full, not just a song.

I think you either misunderstood, or worded something funny because the EMI catalogue IS on iTunes, even without DRM. They were the first to do that on iTunes.

It’s Radiohead. The band had their songs removed because they feel the albums should be listened to, and therefore also sold as, the entire thing, and not just bits of it.

So no you have Thom Yorke arguing with Steve Jobs about philosophical differences. Not holding my breath that either one is going to back down.

Steve Jobs is obviously about to back down on his normal policy. Too much attention/popularity/money coming from Radiohead now…
