Warner/Chappell blocks ‘In Rainbows’ remixes
Producer Amplive who announced an album with remixes of Radiohead’s ‘In Rainbows’, might have to ditch the whole plan. Radiohead’s publisher, Warner/Chappell, does not agree with the release without permission from the publisher or the band.
A month ago, we reported the release of a Radiohead remix album, Rainydayz Remixes, by Amplive. The remixer planned to release a free zip file of the remix record on January 10th to all those who forwarded an email from W.A.S.T.E. with a receipt of their ‘In Rainbows’ purchase. Only a couple of days later, Radiohead and their management let ateaseweb.com know that they did not approve of the release and especially forwarding the emails from W.A.S.T.E.
Just as it’s getting close to January 10th Amplive’s label, 1776, has sent us a cease & desist letter from Radiohead’s publisher Warner/Chappell, demanding that the Bay Area DJ put a halt to his Rainydayz Remixes project, an 8-track remix album of re-envisioned In Rainbows songs featuring guest spots from the legendary Too Short, MC Zumbi of Zion I, Del the Funkee Homosapien of Gorillaz, Chali2na of Jurrasic 5, and a host of others. What this means for the future of the project is currently unclear, but the originally proposed release date of January 10th has now been postponed indefinitely.
Here’s a video and letter response from Amplive.
A LETTER FROM AMPLIVE:
First and foremost I would like to thank everyone who has been digging my remixes. I put a lot of time and hard work into them and I am glad people are appreciating them. I was especially excited about the exclusive verses I was able to get from Del the Funky Homosapien, Chali2na from Jurassic 5, the soul singer Codany Holiday, and K.Flay, who were all also super excited about contributing to the project. I really feel if Radiohead’s team was able to hear these remaining remixed songs, they would feel differently. So I am writing this letter to ask that if you have any post/streams/mp3s of the songs from Rainydayz Remixes that you remove them immediately. Complying with the cease and desist, these remixes can’t be publicly distributed or made commercially available. Even though I was offering them for free in conjunction with the In Rainbows download and had good intentions because of my appreciation for their music, the powers that may be are not seeing it the same way. Hopefully I can find a way for Radiohead to support this FREE release made available only to those who purchased their album. For now I am cooperating with the “C & D” only because it has come from Radiohead’s team and I will respect that. BUT if that changes I am happy to resume my release plans. Again, I appreciate your support in posting them, but because of the situation at this time, it is illegal. Thanks for you help. - Amp Live
Amplive planned to release a free zip file of the remix record on January 10th to all those who forwarded an email receipt of In Rainbows purchase to amplive@onesevensevensix.com. In addition to unveiling the tracklist (which can be found below), Amp had planned on expanding the release model to allow those who had deleted their W.A.S.T.E. emails to reserve a copy of the album by forwarding receipt of a donation – in any amount – to Friends of the Earth, a charity Thom Yorke has officially backed on the band’s Dead Air Space blog. If and when the release is allowed to move forward, all those who have forwarded receipts from W.A.S.T.E. or Friends of the Earth will receive a copy of the album. Tracklist, and more info on the charity below.

Please dont let this not come out. They are the only good remixes that ive heard so far. They are great actually and think about all the time and effort he and others have put into these free remixes that arent hurting anyone.

This is only my opinion:
The only semi-bad thing about AmpLive’s remixes would be the fact that the songs, if and when released, would create another version of Radiohead’s “classic” album, which justs means that the songs would be less emotional and powerful. I think the issue is about the music being taken in a different direction than what Radiohead intended their album to be, a classic album that would trigger emotions and be more than a good collection of remixes. If someone heard only amp’s remix of a song, then their listening experience of ‘In Rainbows’ would be slightly infected. This is the only fault that I see in Amp’s remixes, and Warner are just worried about copyright and the fact that Amplive was planning on using WASTE for distribution.

Damn…. a remix with DEL … that would be fucking FANTASTIC…AMPLIVE is cool… I hope Radiohead has nothing to do with this. It kind of reminds me of when The Rolling Stones management tried to sue the magazine Rolling Stone. Different situation…but I guess same feeling that the band shouldn’t get its hands dirty with this.

Good Post Rice, I agree with it. At least let In Rainbows live and breathe a little on its own before other interpretations can be made. We all know that their(radiohead”s)songs have a certain meaning and emotion that they want people to experience. I think timing plays an important part considering the album has just released a hard copy a couple days ago. In no way do i think having remixes are bad, just give it a little bit of time.

Have to say, I don’t like this one damn bit. If anything, this was done in total tribute … an homage. Thom has no problem with Modeselektor and the like mixing tracks from The Eraser. The only legit excuse is the timing issue … perhaps the band would like the songs to keep their initial integrity for a bit. I’ll be damned if I don’t want to hear this remix album though. These aren’t a bunch of punks MC’ing on these track either. Del? J5? Too Short? Give it up, Boys …

The thing is that this remix album is way too early. The official version’s in the stores for three days and already there’s a remix album. Focus should still lie with the original. Amplivez should’ve done Hailz To Ze Thiefz instead of IR. If Radiohead themselves object to this I can only relate.
How would you feel if the focus of something you made and are proud of was mangled (however well it might be done) within seconds of it’s creation?
That and the “In spirit of giving it away” thing.. No one still seems to understand that you were asked to value the release. If Amplive thinks they “gave it away” it means he doesn’t understand the release yet and maybe therefore he doesn’t deserve the right to profit of IR.
It’s debatable..

Radiohead!!! Let the man release his album. It IS out of PURE respect and you should be honored that this kind of talent is paying this kind of homage. We should all be grateful for this. It was a fantastic gift to Radiohead fans for supporting Radiohead. A support for supporting. So generous. On Fine Fine Music (and elsewhere) there are all kinds of unauthorized Radiohead Remixes. Everyone on Atease downloads them and makes comments. This album, like the remixes on Fine Fine Music, is free (like Radiohead’s album, if you wanted it to be). This reminds me a lot of Danger Mouse’s “The Grey Album”. Hopefully, this will do for Amplive what that album did for Danger Mouse. Thom! Holla at Amplive, like he said. Allow this to happen. No reason not to. I have to say… this is a little disgusting! Also, if there can be string, piano and bluegrass tributes to the band and sold at HMV!!! Then what the hell is wrong with this. If we supported the In Rainbow’s movement then we would all be hypocrites not to support this.

Why is everything being sent to you? Wouldnt it be better if it the letters were sent to Amplive hisself?
I’m pretty sure if someone sent a letter for me to someone completely different I wouldnt get it. ![]()

Storm in a teacup. It’s completely normal that new versions of someone’s works can’t be released without the permission/agreement of all parties. Probably at some point Radiohead will agree and the remixes will see the light of day. No need for any fuss or juvenile hand-wringing.

It’s fairly disturbing — and telling — that some people’s biggest grievance to the Amplive remixes is the fact that he attached a flipping zed to the end of song titles. Shock horror! … Gee, perhaps it’s in keeping with the name of the collection … In the same way that “Packt Like Sardines … ” typographically illustrates the spirit of the song. Get off it.

Remixes as a rule are utter crap anyway. Why anybody would be interested in hearing someone else fuck about with a perfectly good song is beyond me.

Why don’t they write there own material and release it?
Because they can’t. They have no ideas of their own so they ‘remix’ somebody else’s.
It’s sad and pathetic really.
Any schmuck with a computer program can fuck around with somebody else’s material and make a remix. It doesn’t make you a musician. It’s really lame and GAY…

Aw man! I was really looking forward to this. I think this is a real shame, not only because the remixes are of an amazing standard (you can hear what he’s done with Nude and Arpeggi if you look on the Hype Machine), but because of the flattering way in which he was going to distribute it. I really admired what he had done there, even if his work turned out to be bollocks. There are tonts of remixes floating around of Radiohead songs that are not of this calibre. I don’t remember Warner Chappell jumping on Devilhood’s ass when he made his incredible versions of ‘Follow Me Around’, ‘Nude’(the irony!) etc etc. without permission. AmpLive seems to be a very talented, clever yet courteous producer and I hope he and Warner Chappell can come to some sort of compromise to sort out what is ultimately a gesture of celebration and appreciation to his favourite group. Or that it gets leaked!

Wow… These comments. Rdiohead snobbery at it’s finest… “Why do a remix of a great song? Write your own stuff Apmlive.” Shut it. By your logic Radiohead shouldn’t have done the Smiths or Joy Division cover on their webcast. Why alter a perfectly good song? Right? Yet, they were great covers. So just because someone might do a “distasteful” cover, they shouldn’t be allowed to do it? A lot of people are missing the gesture and point of this guy’s album. By pious about all this and making it all too precious is really annoying. If you don’t like it… Don’t listen too it. Doesn’t mean that the guy shouldn’t be able to release it. And… He’s not making a profit.

Umm…He has 4 critically acclaimed studio albums as 1 half of Zion I, and he has countless other production credits. He’s not just a “schmuck with a computer program.”
There’s nothing “lame and GAY” about this.

Sounds like crap to me. And yes, adding a “z” to the original titles shows a staggering lack of imagination.

I’m sorry, but have any of you listened to the same mp3’s as me? How anyone can defend this lazy, sloppy shit is really beyond me. I find it hard to believe that there are actually Radiohead fans out there who enjoy some jerk saying something about “booty” on top of a Nude sample.

Not sure of the politiks behind this movement, but these hip-hop guys look genuine and RH likes innovative stuff. Hope RH just needed time to digest this request. Looking forward to a resolution to hear these new interpretations.

He’s a nobody trying to whip up free publicity off the back of another band’s success.
If he’d just posted his stuff openly, e.g. on the atease forums, no one would have complained.
