Popcorn Superhet Receiver in Alabama
The Alabama Symphony Orchestra will perform Jonny Greenwood’s “Popcorn Superhet Receiver” at the Alys Stephens Center in Birmingham, Alabama.
The 20-minute work was commissioned by the British Broadcasting Corp. in 2004-2005, when Greenwood was a BBC composer in residence. “Popcorn Superhet Receiver” had its first public performance in London and premiered in the United States in January. Portions of Greenwood’s composition may sound familiar to film buffs, as they are included in the soundtrack of the Oscar-winning movie “There Will Be Blood.” The piece was partly inspired by radio static, Greenwood has said, and the music of Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki.
“Popcorn Superhet Receiver” is one of three pieces on the agenda for the Alabama Symphony that night. The program at the Alys Stephens Center, titled “Radioheadings,” will include “Shapeshifters” by Paul Lansky and “Light Overture” by Poul Ruders.Tickets for the 7 p.m. concert are $15. Call 251-7727 for more information, or see the symphony’s Web site.

Roll Tide! Radiohead in Alabama. I think that might be a first for anything Radiohead related.
