Thom Yorke: Radiohead’s stunt was ‘one-off’
They turned the music sales model on its head, but Radiohead won’t be repeating their decision to let fans choose what to pay for their downloads, Thom Yorke told The Hollywood Reporter.
“I think it was a one-off response to a particular situation,” Yorke said of the band’s downloading policy for the album “In Rainbows.”
“It was one of those things where we were in the position of everyone asking us what we were going to do,” he said. “I don’t think it would have the same significance now anyway, if we chose to give something away again. It was a moment in time.”
Radiohead’s decision to allow fans to pay into the online equivalent of an honesty box for the album came shortly after the band walked away from troubled record label EMI, sparking a slew of comment about the future direction of the music industry and the dwindling revenue pot from CD sales.
The band has remained quiet about whether the experiment was a success, with many fans thought to have downloaded the album without paying anything at all. “In Rainbows” later was released as a CD.

I’m just grateful that they decided to make more music and not give up. I payed 80 dollars to have their album. Radiohead keep making music. The better part of this deal is they record their concerts which is where the music industry should go. I’d buy a bag of Doritos and Coca-cola and twenty bucks to see their concert on the internet. But NOOOOOO… you have to drive to some dirty ass city, park your car, waste your time in line, elbow with someone who’s drunk and/or high and listen to them sing off key to all your favorite songs. Oh by the way did I mention 700.00 dollars for the first twelve rows of this concert. In the back you either can’t see them of they look like ants. NOT WORTH IT! Thank you Youtube. I’ll enjoy it on the internet for free.

It was a terrific idea, but I think putting a low base price would be the best route to go. Look at Nine Inch Nails, hell, they released “Ghosts” at 5 bucks a pop and made out like bandits. Radiohead should consider the same.

First time commenting on this site….yeah.Maybe they felt riped off for so many of their fans for spending no money on their record that they spent two whole f*cking years on!

I think alot of the nopays came from people trying to dl it from the site and being the code was bad due to timing out. I “ordered” 8 copys my self, every friend i know who tryed to dl it in the first 48 hours had atleast 4 codes (one had 20 some)
it was easer to just get a new code than to call up and get put on hold trying to get a new code.

Greetings from Argentina, I love Radiohead, I only wait as ever for the next album. The way that can I get it, doesn’t matter at all. In fact, it’s a problem for the salesman, EMI, Radiohead or anyone else. But if I have to make a choice, I buy it to Radiohead. And everybody think this way.

Actually this Hideous Cripple with terminal cancer - that would be me - paid full price for not one, but two - count them ladies and gentlemen - two, discbox’s.
So, I feel I did my bit. Indeed, because I did pay full price, the eventual download was not free for me. Oh, and yeah, I also bought the CD, and the iTunes download. Just an ordinary person trying to help my favourite band over the top since they released ‘IRs’. I wonder, does that count for anything? Especially when I do not have healthcare? It does to me personally, because I do not want anything for nothing from anyone. Hummm … I do not know why that is!
I guess I have always been that way. Where is that honesty box anyway?
Take care.

Radiohead can do whatever they want. The fact that they gave in rainbows away to the entire world for free shows they are truly in it for the music.

I agree with Chris. It’s ridiculous that people expect just because they did this once that they will do it from now on. Radiohead isn’t much on repeating themselves musically - why would they repeat themselves in this way either?

Duh. Like they’re expected to do it every time they release something now? Silly.
