Radiohead’s new song: Super Collider

As reported in our live updates last night, Thom Yorke played a new song in Radiohead’s second encore of their show in Dublin.

At Malahide Castle, Thom played the piano in a song that hasn’t been played before. It’s unsure if this is the new song the band have been working on in previous soundchecks. A video of the performance has turned up. And for now the song is titled ‘Super Collider’ until we hear otherwise. Enjoy!

    Brilliant!!!!!!!

  • Barry

Great, another fucking piano-based Radiohead song. Way to go, Thom…

  • spike

what do you mean barry? Radiohead don’t do enough of these – don’t you like fog (live) or videotape?

  • Dawson

maybe in the recording jonny will come crashing in with distorted guitar before the chorus. dont worry barry boy.

  • James Nauman

I’m excited to see what comes of this little ditty.

    Very excited.

  • m

    reminds me of Cuttooth.

  • David

perhaps it has something to do with the CERN Large Hadron Collider being switched on soon?

  • performingmonkey

Yeah that sounds pretty good. I love it when Thom does this kind of song. Whoever mentioned Backdrifts before was right, it’s got that feel. The chords are a little like I Froze Up too.

Thom continues the genius! This eclipses anything on the new Coldplay record (it really is mediocre if you haven’t heard it yet).

I love piano songs, but this particular one, as Videotape, is kind of boring.
I love Radiohead for not being repetitive, and I’m afraid this ishighly repetitive (at least in my opinion).

  • anon

I like it will sound great with drums
yeah i can hear the backdrifts thing but
    it sounds better lol!

it sounds wonderful – a few electronics or weird guitars noises would be apreciate it maybe when they record the song – i haven t have a taste of much electronic on inrainbows and i really miss that ! but the song is absolutely beautiful – let see the final product ! ! !

  • Tom Piltoff

    Boring.

  • lieutzip

It’s nice; reminds me mostly of “Analyse” from “The Eraser,” only a bit more elusive. It’s silly to argue that this sounds boring or repetitive; it’s an early version. Plus, they’re minimal melody writers, so a lot of their songs sound the same on guitar or piano. I thought “House of Cards” was the most boring thing they’d ever written ’till I heard the studio version. Point is, once the full band adds their contributions, this’ll sound brilliant.

  • Not_my_salad!

I don’t hear backdrifts at all. But I do hear Cuttooth. Very much so.

hopefully Thom Yorke’s not one of the people who thinks the LHC is going to destroy the earth. I really really hope he’s not one of those people.

    Plays guitar please!!

    Oh lucky Irish!

  • http://vinylapproach.blogspot.com Dan

This is utterly horrible. Thom is really off his game here. Videotape was a wonderful piano ballad, but this is just SHIT! Give me back the Radiohead I know and love!

  • mjd180

It’s statistically provable that most pop/rock songwriters tend to go into serious decline, once they get to around the age of 40.

At least Thom has almost an album’s worth of old songs he can still use…

  • Muldfeld

It’s too optimistic sounding until the bridge. It really needs work, but then so does nearly every song’s premiere – with the exception of the 2006 tour songs!

By the way, I love most piano songs, including “Sail to the Moon”.

  • sungumph

song has some interesting lyrics and is absolutely wonderful because it is new…don’t fret because it sounds like so so…its new…it will always become amaZing…because thats what radiohead does

  • T

It’s lovely. Why are so many peeps whining?

  • true story

^because they have nothing else to complain about.

  • SuperPablo

hmmm.. not super impressed, sounds like its still a work in progres…

BUT, anyone who remembers the original “No Surprises” will know that from “Sh*te” can come amazing songs!

  • flyswat

I was at this gig. As always Radiohead never disappoint. Here is Super Collider from a different angle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8tpg8xF10k and 30 pictures I took at the event. http://www.flickr.com/photos/flynch/sets/72157605517421811/

    ROCK ON RADIOHEAD !

  • bored at work

reminds me of U2,in the verse anyway. pretty cool though

  • jimbo

Very nice – i thought the melody was reminiscent of DITNU, and the rhythm similar to Analyse.

  • Erich

Yeah. I think it sounds a bit like Analyze too. However, I like these lyrics better.
And we all know it will sound a lot different (and better) after everyone else from the band is involved, right? Just imagine some great stuff (guitar, electronic bips, strings) from Johnny! Or a sick bassline from Colin! Amazing drums from Phil! Or some cool effect from Ed.

  • TDL

LOL everyone saying oh its sounds like this oh it sounds like that, the thing is it doesnt really sound like anything. NEEDS ALOT OF WORK.

the positive feel of the piano could be a good thing.

  • http://www.underthought.co.uk Fastnet

    Guys, “supercollider” is ONE WORD.

  • alejandro

    sounds like u2

Supercollider is a piece of software. It allows users to create their own codes for the shaping of sound. Artists such as Squarepusher and Aphex Twin are rumoured to have used it. As far as I can gather, it can also be used to create that improvised, complicated, glitchy effect on beats, a la Venetian Snares.

It could also be nothing to do with that.

Reasonable song. As mentioned above, I often find that Radiohead songs sound pretty ordinary at first, but evolve into amazing pieces of music. That said, I thought IMBW sounded incredible on pre-Amnesiac live recordings, but poop on Amnesiac.

Thom is flat in toooo many places too.

  • drmnoleary

    LP7 is gonna kick ass!

A nice tune for the most part, except for the bits where Thom doesn’t quite hit the high notes. Sounds like he’s really straining — must’ve been near the end of the night.

  • Ben

It’s not phenomenal but with a little work could be great actually. Certainly got potential.

  • chickenbrothel

I’ve learned to play this song on the piano and believe me, it’s not simple. It’s actually pretty hard to play and more complex than it seems which, if anything is a sign of maturity in the growth of their music. Complex but subtle. Complex but not distractingly so. And yes, there are a lot of major chords thus contributing to a more uplifting sound but it does more to add to the contrast when he switches to the minor chords anyway. Give them a break, guys. I think they have enough downer songs to warrant one or two uplifting ones. Besides, it’s Radiohead. Without them what would we listen to? Christina Aguilera?
