‘In Rainbows’ nominated for Mercury Prize

Posted on July 22nd, 2008.

Radiohead’s ‘In Rainbows’ is among the nominees for this year’s Mercury Prize. The band’s seventh album will have to compete with 11 albums who are drawn from acts in the UK and Ireland.
Former judge Lauren Laverne, who announced this year’s nominations, said the Mercury was “the most unpredictable, unquantifiable music prize there is. These 12 records say something about British music today. This is a really difficult list. Everyone deserves to be there on their own merit.”

This year’s prize will be awarded at a ceremony on 9 September, which will be screened live on BBC Two.
Although they Radiohead dominated the British music scene for more than a decade, the band have never won the Mercury Prize, despite having been shortlisted three times before for OK Computer (1997), Amnesiac (2001), and Hail to the Thief (2003).

In Rainbows – described by the judges yesterday as “a gripping new chapter in the remarkable Radiohead story” – was offered at 5-1 alongside Alex Turner’s new project, The Last Shadow Puppets, which in April released The Age of the Understatement.

The nominees in full are:

  • Adele - 19
  • British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music?
  • Burial - Untrue
  • Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid
  • Estelle - Shine
  • Laura Marling - Alas I Cannot Swim
  • Neon Neon - Stainless Style
  • Portico Quartet - Knee-Deep In The North Sea
  • Rachel Unthank & The Winterset - The Bairns
  • Radiohead - In Rainbows
  • Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Raising Sand
  • The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age Of The Understatement

Radiohead have got to win this at some point, right? And what better time than this renaissance album that’s really made people think differently about them?

I’d also be happy with Laura Marling though, what a boost that’d be, and the Elbow album deserves any prize going. Tough job.

Hmm…..lots of good ones this time. Burial!! Laura Marling is ok. Radiohead obviously. And that Alex Turner fella has his moments too.

What’s the matter with you lot? You actually WANT them to win this daft prize? I hope they don’t. Not because I dislike the album - I love the album. But I don’t want them afflicted by the Mercury Curse. i.e. they win, then vanish into obscurity.

Plus it’s a silly prize anyway.

Radiohead don’t need any prizes, they’re already one of the best known and most acclaimed bands of all time. It will hardly make any difference if they win this.

I can’t believe burial is on there, the only good song on the album is archangel…

Elbow’s album is fucking brilliant, you never know they could pick it up. I don’t think RH will. Thom was up for The Eraser, wasn’t he? That was when he was scowling at the audience during Analyse.

How come Portishead didn’t make the list?

it is about time that one of the most influential bands of all time won this award.

Thom didn’t so much scowl at the audience during his Mercury performance, he just turned and looked at them, which some might argue amounts to the same thing.

The Mercury is a waste of time.

its pointles to nominate them if they’re not gonna win they been nominated so many times they dont need another one im sure they wont but im sicvk of them being nominated and NOT winning its very annoying at last they havent been hit by the curse
however itsa shame that hey are not recognized in their on country when it comes to these
things. it was the best album last year and this year combined!

As much as I love Radiohead, I personally think Elbow should get this. Seldom Seem Kid is an absolutely stunning album.
