Stanley Donwood: Everybody’s Happy Nowadays

Posted on July 26th, 2008.

Stanley Donwood’s latest exhibition is already running since July 1st at V!P’s Gallery in Amsterdam. If you still want to see the exhibition you’ll have to hurry; It runs till August 3rd.

‘Everybody’s Happy Nowadays’ features new work from Stanley Donwood as well as older Radiohead ‘related’ artwork. At the day of the opening (July 2nd) Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Colin Greenwood dropped by for the exhibition, as well as R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe who played the Amsterdam Westerpark the day after Radiohead.

Michael Stipe: “I biked all around Amsterdam with Bertis and got back to the hotel, where Thom Yorke introduced me to Stanley Donwood, the artist behind most of Radiohead’s graphics. David Belisle and I went to the gallery, Vip’s in Amsterdam, Spiegelgracht 8, where Stanley had his opening last night. The gallerist was supercool and the show was great.”

Dutch newspaper Trouw also published a full page interview on Donwood’s exhibition. For those who missed it, you can read it in full here.

And here’s a video report from Trouw including an interview with Stanley Donwood and you can see Stanley making a small mural on the V!P’s Gallery Wall.

Doesn’t Stanley has a sort of thing with hiding his face in any pictures and stuff? I’ll be honest, this is the first time I’ve really seen what he looks like.

Stanley is as creepy as his art, but what a genius. His daughter is gonna be totally fucked up when she’s older.

I went to see the exhibition yesterday. Fittingly, there was some argument between a cyclist and a motorist right outside when I arrived.

Definitely worth going! I just wish I could have taken one of the prints home.

Was the show title taken from the Buzzcocks song of the same name? Or perhaps that phrase is more common than I imagine.

A good song and good show either way.
