Popcorn Superhet Receiver in San Francisco

Posted on July 30th, 2008.

Wordless Music presents Jonny Greenwood’s ‘Popcorn Superhet Receiver’ in San Francisco, which will mark the US West Coast premier of the classical piece.

In 2005, the BBC Concert Orcherstra premiered Jonny Greenwood’s classical piece ‘Popcorn Superhet Receiver’. Wordless Music took it to the USA, where it debuted in New York last January. The Alabama Symphony Orchestra played it in April. On August 21 you can attend the The Herbst Theatre in San Francisco to hear the piece.

The night before Radiohead takes the stage at the OUTSIDE LANDS Music & Arts Festival in San Francisco, Wordless Music will present the West Coast premiere of Jonny Greenwood’s Popcorn Superhet Receiver for string orchestra. Conductor Benjamin Shwartz (resident conductor of the mighty San Francisco Symphony) will lead the Magik*Magik Orchestra in a program of music by Arvo Pärt, a major influence on the music of Jonny Greenwood and Radiohead, along with Bay Area composers Fred Frith, Mason Bates, and John Adams.

You can buy tickets for this special event starting next week at cityboxoffice.com.

The program will be:

Arvo Pärt: Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten
John Adams: Shaker Loops
Mason Bates: Icarian Rhapsody
Fred Frith: Save As (Joan Jeanrenaud, Cello)
Jonny Greenwood: Popcorn Superhet Receiver

I’d go because Radiohead will be there

I highly doubt Radiohead will be there, so don’t get your hopes up.

Why do you doubt it? Jonny has said in interviews that would have been at the NYC performance, if not for scheduling difficulties. So if this is happening WHILE THEY ARE IN TOWN, I’d say chances are very good that at least Jonny will be there, if not the entire band, especially when the full press release hinted that they would be.

Agreed, the band has the night off the evening before their San Francisco show, I’d say it’s pretty much certain Jonny and co. will be there.

Well, I was at the Daydream Festival in Barcelona where a symphony played Radiohead pieces and “world premiered” Jonny Greenwood pieces from the ‘There Will Be Blood’ soundtrack and none of them were there.

They were playing in Barcelona later that same night, although I did see Thom Yorke out at the beach earlier in the day. I hope they’re there in SF, I’m just saying I wouldn’t totally bank on it.
