Just got back from the show It was amazing to say the least. At the very end it looked and sounded as if Ed messed up on Idioteque. Ed looked at Thom with an odd face and Thom look at Ed almost as saying. “What the hell did you do.” I could be wrong but it seemed that way.

scatterbrain16
August 2nd, 2008

That’s funny about idioteque. I couldn’t really see their expressions from where I was standing, but it sounded great and I didn’t hear any flubs (but it’s pretty hard to tell with that kind of song live unless it’s something excruciatingly obvious)

awesome show. if you’re a fan, you have to dig that setlist. no surpries, lucky, fake plastic….unbelievable. the funny thing I thought, was that their heavier tunes didn’t sound too rockin’, until about half way through bodysnatchers…at which point if there had of been a roof it would have been blown off. i’m excited for the rest of the weekend, but doubt tonight will be beat.

August 2nd, 2008

Loren,
I didnt think it sounded bad. I just noticed that as soon as that sounds kicked in Thom and Ed both gave eachother funny looks. Then Thom sort danced/ran over towards Jonny’s side then back to Ed with same look. haha

scatterbrain16
August 2nd, 2008

Ohh goooooodness.
That was remarkable. Thom is such a love. His dancing is unbelievable and sexy, haha. The setlist was fantastic. My only qualm is that it wasn’t long enough. I can’t wait to see them again. Great show.

If there was anything wrong about Idioteque I think it would be because they had to rush into it to beat the curfew… At the end it seemed like they tried to rush through some things. All together an amazing show :)

Man, I was fairly drunk, but I sure don’t remember National Anthem being played…

JD
August 2nd, 2008

Had Idioteque not caused a mosh pit and ambushing ninja crowdsurfers it would have been a stellar closer. The best performance of the night was The Bends, no contest. Wonderful show!

Goddamn, they played all of In Rainbows… I hope they change it up for the San Diego and Santa Barbara shows…

The fireworks started just before Everything in its Right Place and continued into Fake Plastic Trees and when the song reached the heaveir part/climax the firework finale began. It was like a strobe light behind the stage and shining of the buildings to the right. It was so perfect it seemed as if they timed it that way on purpose. Light show seemed better than the st. louis show too. Great Show!

I don’t know about anyone else, but the sound was too quiet. All the other bands before (except bloc party) were so loud you could hear the bass pumping your chest. Its not good when you can hear people having conversations during the bends. I was just left of the soundboard too. The crowd wasn’t into it. That is why Thom said Chicago was quiet.

Mother fuckers were crowd surfing during “Everything in its Right Place.” Amazing set but Radiohead is probably best seen at something other than a gigantic music fest…

August 2nd, 2008

I dont know how people are complaining. This was my 2nd Radiohead show and it was by far better than the one I saw previous. What more could you have asked for? I thought they were plenty loud, during the gloaming the bass was overwhelming. Incredible. Absolutely stunning. I was with a group of people who were at bonnaroo ‘06 and they said this rivaled that show

….and we all know how good that one was.

Kyle
August 2nd, 2008

Their sound guy sucks. period. SOUND WAS WAY TOO QUIET. That was shy no one could get into it. casual conversations 30 feet away from you overwhelmed the band. bizarre, since every other band there (see Black keys) were blazingly, mercilessly loud.

mikeyb
August 2nd, 2008

Shortest setlist ever???? Why did they agree to an 8-10 space? They are the headliners–they could have insisted on starting earlier. Lame.

freefall
August 2nd, 2008

Sound mixing was decent at best, and was way too quiet compared to all the bands beforehand. I don’t get it. I don’t get it because all the bands before sounded really loud and great. I mean, I put in ear plugs for gordol Bordello, because I wanted to preserve my ears for Radiohead. It didn’t matter.

Dave
August 2nd, 2008

i wouldve liked the sound and the bass to be louder but i think everything else was perfect. great show.

aren’t they?

Jack
August 2nd, 2008

Oh shove off those of you who complain about them playing In Rainbows songs. If that’s what they want to play let them goddamn play it. It’s lollapalooza and they are playing for the fans. Also, the sound wasn’t terrible, and I was in the very front. Couldv’e been louder, could’ve played longer, but you know what….it’s Lollapalooza, not just a Radiohead concert. Don’t blame them for things they probably had no control over.

The Gloaming
August 2nd, 2008

I love Radiohead, but their performance was horrible last nite. The sound was weak, which was weird considering the six speaker towers. The crowd was horrible, it was hot, and people trampled each other to get to the front(the sound was worse up there by the way). I actually left halfway thru because I was sick from the heat, and the music just wasn’t grabbing me. It didn’t even come close to being as great as the 2001 Grant Park performance. :(

Finishing with 2+2 and Idioteque, are they insane?? Great to see Dollars & Cents and Optimistic there but why the fuck can’t House of Cards just go away? It’s 5 minutes that no-one wants. In that time they could have played Talk Show Host or Pyramid Song or something.

I loved 2+2=5!!! and all the songs from The Bends. Everything In Its Right Place and Fake Plastic were awesome, and the fireworks really kicked the feelings during those songs into high gear. No Surprises & Paranoid Android made me flash back to the legendary 2001 show. Beautiful. I was sad about no Karma, esp. since my boyfriend was seeing them for the first time. He really was hoping for You & Whose Army. All I Need & 2+2 were pure heaven for me.

The other comments are true though. Grant Park 2001 was magic. Seeing them at Lolla 2008 makes me appreciate 2001 even more. Last night during their set, the sound was much quieter, so we had to wiggle our way closer towards the front just to hear better and to get away from the groups talking over Radiohead playing.

I had planned on being way up front for most of the day to secure our Radiohead spot, but Gogol Bordello inspired many drunken sweaty fans to push me and everybody else around and catapult beer into my eyes. That sucked enough that I left to appreciate the much more cool energy of Mates of State and The Jicks.

I love you Radiohead! Please come back to Chi-town on your own!! Thank you for another beautiful show in August just before my birthday!!!

August 3rd, 2008

I was up close to the stage so I cant speak for people farther back, but I thought the show was great, including the sound.
If I was traveling Radiohead around the country I might get sick of house and cards and others but I dont. So I dont mind hearing those songs. 3rd RH show and I thought it was great.
I am only treated with a Radiohead show once every couple of years so I cant find any reason to complain.

August 3rd, 2008

By the looks of all of the whiners, I feel a bit better about missing out on this one. By the sounds of it, mind you, it’s a shame that the show was quiet. Ah well, it’s a warm up show for many great nights to come! I cannot friggin’ wait until Wednesday night. I’m losing sleep over it… too much in fact.

Im sorry to those who think we are whiners, but seriously, Bloc Party was so loud, my insides were thumping. That’s right. Bloc Party. So imagine driving over 3 hours to see Radiohead, standing in the heat for several more hours, then to get teased by Bloc Party’s awesome sound, then Radiohead comes on, and its like flat as all hell. Really, really dissapointing. Bloc Party, I think your music sucks, but thanks for kickin my ass for at least a little while. :)

I thought this was a great show.

I was about 15 feet away.

It was very, very loud where I was. The loudest band of the day.

August 3rd, 2008

Amazing show. I would agree that the sound mix was off, particularly during most of the more rock based songs (with the VERY notable exception of Bodysnatchers, which was astounding). The fireworks going off during Fake Plastic Trees was unreal. The National Anthem was definitely a highlight. I don’t know why the crowd gave Dollars and Cdnts such a lame response, that track was great, as always.

Joe
August 4th, 2008

This show was way too quiet! I saw gogol at the same stage and they were rocking it WTF! Thom said “you are quiet Chicago” That was funny cause i was thinking the same thing! Great performance shitty ass stage set up!

August 4th, 2008

I was amazed at how low-volume the first few songs were and although RH eventually opened up and put on a good show, the volume seemed considerably lower than that of Bordello (crazy energy by the way) and the bass of Bloc Party. The crowd sucked and Lollapalooza, as a festival, is in a state of decline. 2001 grant park show encapsulated RH’s aura, musicality and emotive vibes while this show teetered precariously on the brink of disappointment. That being said, I’m a sucker for any RH show anywhere anytime. Too bad they canceled the fabled Thursday show, I saw them in 06 at the tiny auditorium theatre, 8th row and blew my load the entire time.

ps. The Gloaming was terrifying and unreal. Nice sleazy jazz break.

it was radiohead, so it was still better than almost anything else. but it was the worst radiohead set i’ve seen. malkmus & the jicks blew radiohead away; they had the energy, and radiohead just didn’t. i realize thom had been ill, so maybe that, plus tour-break rust and the crappy sound, all sapped the band’s energy along with the crowd, but i was expecting at least typical brilliance and i experienced a band that wasn’t quite firing on all cylinders. i sure wish they’d tour more often; i suppose it’ll be at least two years before i get to see them redeem themselves!

August 6th, 2008

Hope it was said already, but the fireworks that came in sync with the music was a complete coincidence! Soilder Field was having “Family Night” and the fireworks just happened to come in and make the show THAT much better. Best lights I ever saw, I hope they have a DVD - there were helicopters flooding lights on the crowd, maybe filming?

Shiggity Shane
August 6th, 2008

yea, but the sad part about the fireworks though was that they were LOUDER than the music. Thats right, the fireworks, a mile or so away were louder. At least where I was.

Dave
August 7th, 2008

Uh, I don’t know about the fireworks being louder than the music…I was front row and I didn’t even know about the fire works until Monday when I looked at reviews and stuff.

But the show was simply incredible!

August 8th, 2008

Awesome performance and setlist. However, I have to agree with those that that thought the sound was too low. It was the same at that stage the following night for Rage Against The Machine. However, when we went to see NIN on Sunday night, you could hear f-ing Kanye’s set all the way from the other side of the park.
