I almost went to this show…..with the idea the 2nd night would be filled with rare songs…..NOT THE SAME FRICKIN SONGS THEY PLAYED THE NIGHT B4!!! im glad i stayed home.

Phil
August 10th, 2008

Phil. It’s clear they’re going to play in rainbows songs again. It’s the fucking in rainbows tour.

The National anthem is played regularly as it’s a fan favourite. Same applies to the gloaming.

Up until song 14 the songs seem fairly diverse from last night.

August 10th, 2008

I assume you mean through song 14, since they didn’t play Bangers and Mash last night (unfortunately, given that that’s when I went).

Just got back from the show and I am very happy with how the Radiohead band delivered for my 7th live meeting with them in 8 years. “Airbag” “Kid A” “Telex” “Pyramid” & “Exit”. I was fairly geeked. Great setlist, great sound, weird and tired crowd, oversold and overcrowded venue. APW is a nice idea that needs some details ironed out in the upcoming years. However I was pleased with the cute girl to ginzo mook ratio which is always a festival wildcard these days. The Kangs are all growd’s up and played a slammin opening set. OK, that’s it. God bless Radiohead and goddang me for thinking I still had the tolerance to enjoy another oversold crowded festival and $5 slices of pizza.

Been to many Radiohead shows. This was the best ever. Unbelievable experience. This was something special. Enough said.

August 10th, 2008

some perfect moments in this show, great as always…

but really, they’re slowing down some of the in rainbows tracks to a point where it’s almost comical. i wonder if they’re even aware that they’re doing it. i’m not asking for rawk-out sped up versions, but they should probably be as fast as they are on the record for a giant outdoor show.

that said, planet telex -> idioteque for the end was ridiculous.

So much better than last night…the air was just different it seemed.

August 10th, 2008

oh man this was great. all the bands on the main stage were amazing, except for kings on leon. they blew. i was about 4th or 5th row, center stage. i only have one complaint. why the hell do people lay down in the middle of the crowd?. it just makes it harder for the other people to be comfortable and have a good experience.

so yeah. screw you, guy laying down and reading a book while i was trying to dance to animal collective.

I think they screwed up Airbag, but otherwise amazing.

August 10th, 2008

absolutely beautiful show and sequenced perfectly. pyramid song as first encore was incredibly moving and sounded way better than previous tours. exit music and where i end and you begin were haunting. its a testament to radiohead that people were able to endure the miserable transportation situation with no options but a ferry with lines stretching 2 hrs plus.

August 10th, 2008

Show tonight was epic.

I agree, something about “Airbag” didn’t seem right and you could tell Thom was pissed, as he went into “Fake Plastic Trees” very quickly after.

I think he actually said, “If we were that good looking we’d be friends” in regard to Kings Of Leon.

Still in awe of the visuals.

Tonight was magical. Even more than last night.

And…Kings of Leon were AWFUL.

holy crap the best radiohead show I’ve ever been to. Way different and way better setlist than friday night. What an encore setlist: Pyramid Song, AIRBAG, PLANET TELEX and Idioteque to close it out! And they’ve really polished their live versions of Kid A and the Gloaming. And as always, their lighting effects were mind-blowing. What an experience!

AMAZING LAST NIGHT!

matt
August 10th, 2008

Im not sure who is responsible for the event last night but it was truly awful. We got there at 4:30 because no reason to get there before that. We waited an hour and a half just to get in. 1 entrance is that a joke, and they didnt check tickets. No scanner so if you want to go tonight just bring a piece of paper and they will tell you to rip it on your way in. Once inside (after the 40 min walk from the lightrail)we thought we would have a beer. Wrong. The line to get your ID check was (this is not a joke) was also an hour and a half long. Then if you were crazy enough to wait in that line you got treated like cattle and hearded onto another line in a very very small beer garden with one bathroom and no vioew of the stage. The sound for the Kings set was just a crime. They sounded like they were playing in Hoboken. Radio, who I got to see play at the same venu some years back, are always great and it was a treat to see them. Trying to get out of that place was like an exodus. 3 hours to get to Hoboken. Bottom line I did not miss the drunk fools but It should have been planned a lot better. Poor festival and I think the last one for this venu.

The show was amazing, can’t wait for Mass. now!

Whomever said Kings of Leon blew is a moron because I never actually listened to them prior to last night, and I think I’m going to pick up a couple of their albums. They were AWESOME!

Reckoner to open was amazing! FPT was so sick. Jonny was absolutely killing his guitar last night!

August 10th, 2008

I was there both nights. Radiohead was amazing both night, but probably better on the second night. I could have gone without seeing house of cards two nights (personal preference), but the were amazing shows, tonight was one of if not the best shows I’ve seen them do. A couple observation…. Why do phrat boys go to radiohead concerts, there is no place for them….Please people don’t sing along to big ideas, Paranoid anderoid…ok, but not when Thom is doing his thing…Also, don’t complain about seeing in rainbows songs, it is there current record and it’s a big hit, what do you think they are gonn play?!?!. Anyways, had to get that off my chest.

What blew so much about Kings Of Leon? For 6 years I never listened to them because of their image, then my friend convinced me to see them at Coachella last year and they blew me away. Made me get into them. Awesome live band.

Dave
August 10th, 2008

Yeah, I agree with the complaints about the crowd.
Sadly this wasn’t a Radiohead show, it was a festival featuring Radiohead and I got the feeling a lot of people were there to see whoever might be playing.

If you withstood the battle up front, you got treated to asshole kids elbowing their way through everyone at the last minute and saying EXCUSE ME, EXCUSE ME, while that one dude sat on the ground and read the Business section of the NYT.
Then if you moved farther back, you got the Wall Street crowd talking about their investments during Exit Music and complaining about “all this acid shit” (the Gloaming, etc).

HEY RADIOHEAD, NO MORE SHITTY FESTIVALS UNLESS YOU HAVE TO. THE MORE CONTROL YOU HAVE, THE BETTER. K?

trip_fontaine

the crowd was terrible. all of the people around me were rude and obnoxious. but obviously radiohead surpassed all the bullshit and created an amazing experience.

August 10th, 2008

unreal. 11th time seeing them. The trippiest set possible except for maybe MSG 03 night 1. The intense lights made my girl pass out in the Nat’l Anthem. She was back up in the middle of the song but it was so dramatic jaws were just dropping.
Even the frat boys were silent during fake plastic and exit.

Radiohead were amazing at APW yesterday. They proved once again that their really the only Rock band that’s worth listening to at the moment.
About the KOL,they seem they can’t make up their minds what (who) they want to sound like Lynard skynard or U2. Animal Collective (White Noise to a beat!! God Awful!!!

August 10th, 2008

Probably the most musically-skilled performance I have seen from Radiohead: Really seemed at home with themselves and wanted to put a new flourish on their older songs (Planet Telex was a wow, Fake Plastic Trees too). My only better experience was at the MSG theater back in 2005.

Positives - Their relaxed manner, Thom’s singing, quality of the sound system and mix was high.

Negatives - Much of In Rainbows sounds the same (Thom’s falsetto): Playing some B grade songs (Bangers and Mash)

Glad I avoided the Light Rail and ferry on the way home (its an easy walk to the Jersey City path station) - I learned all about the choke points in 2001.

Having seen KOL once before, I thought they were 100% better this time - quite enjoyable.

Overall APW was a decent attempt at a festival within the NY area… better than a stadium, and the skyline is alway great.

Negatives: Getting there by Mass Transit should be easier, getting in was underprepared, the beer process was ridiculous, and the food process about the same.

Bathrooms, standing space, variety of music were all adequate.

B+ show from the boys, B experience for All Points West.

As one of the previous posts stated, this was the worst music “festival” I’ve ever attended. Radiohead was great as always. The setlist was a little chill with a few too many new songs, but great show overall.
The festival was absolutely dreadful. Golden Voice should be totally ashamed of themselves.
I would never have bothered with otherwise shite lineup, but this was the only Radiohead show I could make this tour. And, as expected, it was nothing more than a glorified, overpriced Radiohead concert.
Tons of people started showing up around 5pm or so because there was absolutely no point in going any earlier. As you walked in, you got a rather vigorous body pat down. I realize the need for security, but it was a little excessive.
When you finally got in, you found about 20 low grade portapotties that were disgusting. And when you got all the way to the other side of the festival, the VIP security informs you that those are the ONLY bathrooms for EVERYONE else. Are you fucking serious?! I’m fairly certain it was some kind of health code violation.
The two other stages were small and crappy. The sound bled into each other from the stages. The only other band worth watching was The Roots, who got a far too brief 1hr time slot on a crappy side stage right next to the food stands and the whack a mole games?! They made the best of it, but I’m glad I’ve seen them lots before.
Getting out was awful. We took the ferry ride, which was a total ripoff. It would have been cheaper and easier to take a cab all the way to the park from Manhattan, but they wouldn’t allow it. The ferry proceeded to drop several thousand people off in a sketchy part of NYC to fight tooth and nail over a dozen or so cabs that ventured into the neighborhood. Totally fucked up. I hope Golden Voice lost money on the festival. But the bastards probably made out ok with the high ticket prices, lack of bathrooms, and the 3 or 4 cheap, weirdo cut-out sculptures in a half assed attempt to make it a cool set up like Coachella. Next time, I hope Radiohead doesn’t bail them out and just puts on their own show. The sound would have been better no doubt. If I had to go to a festival, I wish I could have made Lolla, C3 is alot more competent.
By the way, nice touch with the Free Tibet flags, RH!

I did not like the festival,
me and my girlfriend parked on a PL on the southside of the festival we only went for saturday. We then found out they had 1 entrance completely on the otherside. The bathroom situation like one person said was redikulous, so was standing in a huge line to get filled pitas onyl to find out the first line was for just the pita then you had to stand in another to get the filling.

that being said animal collective was great

kings of leon were aweful idk really what anyone would like about them but they were terrible. Not played terrible they sounded find but they have aweful songs and are terribly generic.

Radiohead was ont he top of their game, best show iv seen them do
the sound was incredible given we were right by the soundboard but i have never heard live sound that good, being able to hear everything perfectly with full bass and drums but also a full high end was unreal. You could ehar everything jonny did and never lost vocals in the mix. My girlfriend started to get really sick whichi felt aweful about because she had been waiting all day to see them, we actually had to walk out of the crowed during exit music which is bothof our favorite songs, but i knew if she said she was so sick she wanted to leave a radiohead show, that she meant it. We watched the rest of the show from a food area sitting on a platform. Incredible though really great energy and what not way better then toronto in 06 or st louis on the first leg.

Well worth it

kings of leon was the most annoyingly unoriginal band i have ever had to listen to in my life.

that being said,
besides being so far back that it was difficult to see the stage,
the greatest sound ive ever heard. wish i could go back and get closer.

I still cant believe at what my $100 got me. Something should really be done about the lack of any consideration on the part of Goldenvoice for the customer. It doesnt matter who’s music you like or dont we could all agree the actual festival was awful. I got to see RH same location 2001 it was great. They some how put on a festival and made sure it was no fun. Did anyone else get the feeling they were treated like a child. It would take Elvis to get me back next year. (and a keg infront of the stage just for me)

that was the best fucking show i’ve ever seen. just a bit disappointed that they didn’t play myxomatosis or karma police.

August 11th, 2008

OK,
The festival wasn’t that bad. There were somethings that were really good and there were some things that sucked. It is an NA festival after all. I liked the free water, and the free fair (me an two friends won a kg bag of candy in 30 minutes). The crowd wasn’t great and some things were over-priced. I mean I went to Fuji rock and APW was not in the same universe, but it was similar to coachella except smaller. Anyways, 180$ for 2 nights of Radiohead, a great set by girl talk and KOL. It was worth it for sure, I spent 150$ for a ticket to see them in TO 2 years ago, and it wasn’t nearly as good.

Radiohead delivered a great set last Saturday night and the weather was just amazing. That said, as much as I love Radiohead (and the Kings), this show served as a final reminder to me to never attend a general admission show of this size again.
The concept of APW is all nice in theory for the texty myfacebooky tweenty yoots of today (showcase for new bands/modern rock, goin’ green, no cars, tramp stamps, tribal tats, great racks, vote Obama, etc.), but turned out to really be annoying after paying $100 in ticket costs up front ($89 face plus $11 TicketMasturbator fees). Once arriving at the park, there was at least a mile walk to the ONE entrance to the venue (all the way across and outside the park) after deboarding the light rail. This is no prob to me, as I said, last night was one of the best nights weatherwise of 2008. Had it been raining, or humid, dude, we would have had a severe problem. Might have actually wanted one of the $3 tap waters in Poland Spring bottles being sold on the trail to. After that trek, there was a 20 minute line to get IN to the place at 6:30PM (after the festival show started at 1PM). It was easier to get into Yankee Stadium for the All Star game last month. Thats saying something. OK, I get it, extra security, whatever. I’d bet my additional good money, though, it was attributed to lax, disinterested, ill equipped and unorganized security. What are these kids going to sneak in? A skull bong with a stereo mic attached?? Who fucking cares?? Let’s wrap it up, Chiefs, lets go! Once inside, the lines for the Johnny on the Craps were about 200 feet each. Some shithouse stations were only in blocks of FOUR. Fairly insane. To get a beer, you would need to stand on another 300 ft line, get your ID checked, stand in another 75ft line, so you can pay $7 for a 12 ounce watered down Bud Light and not leave a crowded beer corral until you finish and head back into the general audience. By that time, any slight buzz would be sweat out..and back into the line again. Then off that line to join the piss line. Then you may want a tiny snack for some energy. A slice of “real Italian” pizza cost $5. A real “jackup jerkoff” is what its really called. To top it all off, people were EVERYWHERE in this 88 acre spread. Just fucking packed in. I understand people, its a festival, but holy fucking shit. Then, of course, you have the “be in” people laying out in main traffic thoroughfares and resulting in a lot of “hey man, my blanket!” going on. Truly weird vibe. By the time Radiohead came on, people looked EXHAUSTED. There was little to no energy left. There was too much work and time spent to simply enjoy a fucking rock show. Honestly, I have NO idea how they got everyone out of that place last night. I took off at the right time because I had a general idea how Radiohead’s setlist was going to go. The light rail back was still packed. A lot of people had the same idea. So, as Radiohead plays, a mass exodus begins in the back. You know you must be able to look out and see this wave of shadows rolling away. Really weird, here I am, walking away from my favorite band, because I don’t want to wait 3 hours in a line to get home. Maybe I’m just too old for this shit, but, I just think this show could have been handled so much better. When I saw Radiohead here in 2001, it was simply perfect, not overcrowded, perfect space to groove, beer outside a pen. Now, for the sake of being environmentally conscious, sure you get less cars, but hey, now you can sell more tickets creating an overcrowded uncomfortable scene. We are saving the planet shit yeah…and we are making a fucking kick ass profit! The whole vibe of the joint just felt so hypocritical and pig-headed by trying to run a festival in NJ of all places like this. It’s just simply ill-advised and ill-planned. Before saving the planet next time, lets wipe out the fucking unions first. Because that’s what bummed the folks out I saw trying to get home on Saturday, not plastic bottles or errant pot smoke killing the ozone.

What a great setlist. I went the first night and had a great time, much better than Lollapalooza, with a notably better sound mix. That said, I know Saturday sold out so I’m wondering if the sound would have been as good (ie if I was stuck way the fuck behind people like was inevitable at Lolla). Just wish I could have gone to both nights, damn me cursed finances!!!!
