Today, the first show of the new series of ‘7 Worlds Collide‘ took place at the Powerstation in Auckland, New Zealand. The project initiated by Neil Finn features Radiohead’s Phil Selway and Ed O’Brien. The show received a rave review from the NZ Herald: ‘It had variety. It had comedy. It had songs by the greats”… with Phil Selway playing guitar and singing.
The full band consists of Neil Finn, Liam Finn, Johnny Marr, Jeff Tweedy, John Stirratt, Glenn Kotche, Sebastian Steinberg, Pat Sansone, Lisa Germano, KT Tunstall, Don McGlashan, Bic Runga, Ed O’Brien and Phil Selway. The first part of the show featured old and new songs from Don McGlashan, Bic Runga, Liam Finn, KT Tunstall and Johnny Marr, backed by other musicians including four members from Wilco, Ed O’Brien and Phil Selway.
The second half featured several Wilco and Radiohead songs. NZ Herald: “Finn snr wrestled manfully with the vocal to Radiohead’s Bodysnatchers, but couldn’t quite pin Thom Yorke’s original hyperventilations over its monster riff. Not one for the live concert DVD perhaps.”
Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy did vocals on Radiohead’s Fake Plastic Trees. Tweedy warned “I fear this will be rather like Paul Rodgers fronting Queen, but here goes” And then the surprise of the show. Phil Selway suddenly became the singer of the band, playing guitar and performing his own song ‘Family Madness’. NZ Herald: “Radiohead’s drummer Phil Selway delivered one of the night’s nicest surprises in what was his live singing debut of a rather lovely self-penned song destined for the album.”
The band will play two more shows at the Powerstation on January 6 & 7.
