Thom Yorke takes part in Grammy promo campaign
Thom Yorke is featured on posters in the latest promo campaign for the 51st annual Grammy Awards.
The campaign, which includes TV, outdoor and interactive advertising, highlights the songs that have influenced musicians like Thom Yorke. A portrait of the artists can be seen from the typograhic placement of the song titles.
The TV commerical with Thom Yorke has not yet aired. “As a cultural event that inspires music fans everywhere, the Grammy Awards telecast is an opportunity to ‘celebrate the music that makes us,’ the way it makes us feel and the impact it has on our lives,” said Evan Greene, chief marketing officer of The Recording Academy, in a release.
A Grammy spokeswoman said that each musician taking part in the campaign was asked to name between 10 and 20 of their favourite artists. These names then formed the basis of the posters and TV adverts. Among the artists chosen by Yorke are Liars, Bjork, Elvis Costello, R.E.M. and Scott Walker.
Stevie Wonder, Lil Wayne, Coldplay, Lenny Kravitz and Rihanna are also featured in the campaigns. With Radiohead, Thom Yorke is nominated for several Grammy Awards, including ‘Best Album’. The 51st Annual Grammy Awards take place on February 8 in Los Angeles.
At least it’s a great game to find out which tracks by which artists are listed. [thanks to fosco, who spotted the poster in New York City]

Some of the other artists Thom must’ve mentioned, in no particular order:
Rolling Stones
Bob Dylan
Modeselektor
Autechre
Arvo Pärt
David Bowie
Prince Buster
The Verve
Madvillain
Laika/Lightnin’ Hopkins (“Black Cat Bone”)
Throwing Muses
Can (probably, for “One more night”, although it could be Phil Collins…)
DJ Shadow
PJ Harvey
UNKLE
Although that’s 20 in total, there seem to be a few more titles there (some do have two song titles, e.g. Throwing Muses and Elvis Costello.)

Bittersweet Symphony is a great song. I’m always baffled by people who think there’s some honor in decrying good music that happens to have also enjoyed commercial success.

This is a beautiful typographic study that is well balanced visually.
However I am missing the concept. I’m hoping it is just because the article is missing a few details.
I’m having a hard time tying the words to the concept
IE: I don’t get it.
If the words had been tied to Thom or Radiohead a little closer in clear understanding what people know of them then I think this would be 100% on target. Or again, I just don’t get it.
