Something for the Rag & Bone man…

radioheadgrammyRadiohead were very prominent at the recent Fashion Week in New York City. Not in person, but on a lot of playlists. One of those playlists was even curated by Thom Yorke.

We’ve received some Twitter messages about Thom Yorke playing some kind of role at the New York Fashion Week at the Rag & Bone Fashion show. It turned out that there was indeed some truth in that. The Radiohead frontman, who was apparently wearing Rag & Bone at his Grammy performance, curated the soundtrack of the Rag & Bones fashion show. Tracks included Squarepusher’s ‘Freeman, Hardy, and Willis Acid’, Modeselektor’s “Dark Side of the Sun’, Björk’s ‘The Dull Flame of Desire’ and ‘II B.S.’ by Charles Mingus.

Vanity Fair collected all the tracks played during the fashion shows and the Radiohead-ratio is very high. Shipley & Halmos topped the list with and all-Radiohead playlist: Twelve Radiohead songs and two by Thom Yorke. Spurr included two Kid A tracks (‘Kid A’ and ‘Idioteque’) and Jillian Lewis played ‘Arpeggi/Weird Fishes’.

Should we all become fashionistas and start wearing R&B?

First we hear of Thom dancing naked with Macca (still rumours as far as I’m concerned) and now this?

    I’m scared.

  • Shannon

From No Logo to Rag & Bone… Thom giving up on his principles?

  • Disapointed

    Wow…
    Tear.

  • Sad About This

On the recently released DVD of a german concert Thom introduced “Paranoid Android” by saying… and I qoute…
“This is for people who wear Gucci and Pranada and don’t see anything wrong with that at all…”
I thought he was degrading those fashionista snobs. Guess I was wrong.

It’s pretty funny how people treat anything that has anything to do with fashion as the devils work. Why don’t you quiet down.

  • puh

    He’s good anyway…

  • Atwah

Why put down THIS kind of fashion? Because it is completly vane and elitist.
    Thats why.

  • Your Mom

  • Atwah

Hey. Youe Mom! Why don’t you fuck off and go try on your Parada Pant Suit. You fag.

  • Scott

I love it when the *really* hardcore Radiohead fans – who eat up anything the band does – get angry when someone says anything remotely about negative about their heros…

    Ah to be 15 again..

  • Your Mom

Oh Scott you seem to always have something Negative to say about the band guess I’m just sick of your opinions.

Oh and Atwaht do you really have to go to the “fag” comment? I thought it was Oasis fans that were the “fag” haters.

Go cry in the dark and dream of “Pablo Honey” little girls.

Get a grip people. Unless you knit and crochet your own clothes, everything you wear is designed by somebody.

  • Amy

Gucci just called wondering what Rag & Bone has done to earn this endorsement.

  • Mmmm Bacon

Well I guess we should knock him out and smash up his brains now. Right Hedges? lol

  • Hedges

    Guess so…
    Thom’s will be done.

  • Loki

For some reason many Radiohead fans take lyrics like “Gucci little piggy” at face value, like a code to live by. You trust that narrator? Thom laughs, you see.

  • Gucci

    @ Loki:

“…one of our friends spills a glass of wine over a vacuum packed gucci outfit complete with matching white hand bag. the witch goes crazy, we think it is fuunny. until we see the evil in her eyes. m friend is asked to leave. the gucci creature is the closest thing i have seen to the devil. the woman is possessed. i cannot sleep that night asking what we’ve got our selves into. voices talking like fax machines, hissing and spitting like demons, this is the master race. and now im part of it. anyway you didnt want to know that.”

Somehow I doubt Thom Yorke found that experience funny after all.

  • Loki

no, but he found his own paranoid reaction to her- and to what that woman symbolized for him- equally scary as the experience, and that is why PA exists as it does. Most of us are familiar with Palahniuk and/or the Fight Club movie. PA’s their Tyler Durden song. It’s the moment when the world’s craziness drives the narrator crazy. It’s a satire of a character for feeling he’s above all that bullshit, and lashing out, just as much or more as it’s an attack on the bullshit itself. You could equally call it their Cobain song, or their early 90s Thom Yorke song, or whatever. Of course we, and the songwriter, identify with the character. But, if you think that’s all, you fail to understand Thom’s songwriting. It’s not the kind of joke that is actually funny, but more the kind that would be funny, if it wasn’t so deadly serious. The narrator’s a self-styled prophet +terrorist. The point in Thom’s lyrics there, is clearly not that we should all agree with every word. Cathartic, yes, constructive, no. Ok, it’s a far cry from realizing that being like PA’s narrator is useless, to beginning to be able to justify a fashion show where Thom re-enacts the plot of No Logo on favourites from his mostly uncommercial iPod playlists, but “kicking squealing Gucci little piggy” = fuck all to do with it, anyway. If there is a problem here, it’s not that Thom, who’s always liked fashion, still seems to like it. It would be the way he’s using others’ music here (in a way he has said did his own head when his music was used as a product seller) but then again he may have checked with the artists and they were happy to have their stuff get this attention. But can you get it through your head: Thm hs alws lkd fshn. Mb Thms frnds r sffrng n da fncl crss n sma dem r rtsts r dsignrs 4 rag n bone? mb!
