Stanley Donwood exhibits new work in Bristol

WoC-Stanley-Donwood-solo-200Stanley Donwood has another exhibition coming up. The Radiohead artist will exhibit new work in Bristol at Weapon of Choice Gallery, Opening on the 10th July (6-10pm), the new gallery space will come alive with Stanley’s latest series of artwork entitled ‘EL CHUPACABRA’.

The show features 13 fictional characters – Pandemons, which Stanley describes as feral carnivorous parasites who are feasting ingloriously on the foully smoldering remains of late-period Western consumer capitalism. Wearing suit and tie, these Pandemons represent white-collar criminal/politicians.

Stanley’s apt choice of title ‘El Chupacabra’, meaning ‘the goat sucker’ in Spanish is his response to suffering a long fixation with the horned gods and having to live amongst some of the most mendacious economic times he can remember provoking him to start making pictures of Pandemons.

“I’ve got nothing against goats. I’ve simply discovered that if I draw a goat, give it the mouth of a rapacious carnivore then dress it in the suit and tie of a disgraced banker or politician it looks fucking evil. There are thirteen Pandemons in the show called ‘el chupacabra’. Thirteen ghosts at the funeral. Thirteen spectres at the feast of the goat. Loitering on the blackened cliffs of free-market economics, cackling as they raise a glass to toast Milton Friedman, Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and Augusto Pinochet.

Gallons of paint I’ve poured over them to drown their snickering. But still they laugh.” Comments Stanley Donwood.

‘EL CHUPACABRA’ by Stanley Donwood runs from the 10th July – 9th August 2009, Weapon of Choice Gallery, 14 St Michael’s Hill, Bristol, BS2 8DT

He’s so fucking insane. I love it!

  • Cee

Well he’s not insane. On the opposite, i find that just as Rh music, a completely coherent excercise which consists of pointing out through art the most uncomfortable aspects of the system we belong to. This is not easy art. It takes respect and responsibility to accept this and that is way before you like it! And yet it looks so inoffensive! That’s the genius of it!
