The performance was already pretty unique as the Radiohead frontman hasn’t done any solo shows since the release of ‘The Eraser’. Thom Yorke took the stage at noon. Despite the early hour, the festival organiser called Thom Yorke’s performance another headlining slot at the festival. Responding to the crowd’s cheers Thom said: “Shhh… There’s people sleeping”. Playing on piano, Thom started with ‘The Eraser’, which was the first of five tracks played from Thom Yorke’s debut album. When someone from the crowd shouted “I love you Thom”, he replied; “Yes dear, I’ll be home later.” For Harrowdown Hill and Black Swan Thom took the guitar, looped it and returned to the organ. Everything In Its Right Place was played on piano as well as on a sampler and drum machine.
Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich was watching (and singing along) on the side of the stage. Thom Yorke played three songs which were never released on a studio album; ‘Follow Me Around’, ‘True Love Waits’ and played for the new song ‘The Present Tense‘ for the first time with key lyric ‘I’m Lost In You’. “Thank you for having me,” said Thom at the end of the set. Thanking the Latitude Festival, he said: “I thought it was a nuts idea, which is why I did it!” (…) “Have a wicked Sunday”.
The original setlist had a different encore planned. ‘Reckoner’ from Radiohead’s ‘In Rainbows’ was on the setlist, but was not played as well as another unreleased song ‘Give Up Ghost’.
The BBC promised a broadcast of Thom Yorke’s full set on Tom Robinson’s 6Music show Today, but it turned to be only two tracks: Harrowdown Hill and True Love Waits, you can listen to both soundboard recordings – and an audience recording of The Present Tense over at FineFineMusic.com.
