Thom Yorke Band – Live at Echoplex, LA – live report

Posted on October 3rd, 2009.

echoplex setlist thom yorkeThe extra warm-up show at the Echoplex in Los Angeles last night was not as short as Thom Yorke said it would be. The show included two encores, introducing the audience with four new songs.

The show attracted a lot of celebrities including Spike Jonze, Rick Rubin, Dangermouse, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, members of Daft Punk, Sonic Youth (Kim Gordon), Muse (Matt Bellamy and Dominic Howard) and Rage Against The Machine (Zack De La Rocha). Probably all invited for the after party which was planned as well.

The band with Nigel Godrich, Flea, Joey Waronker and Mauro Refosco basically played Thom Yorke’s album The Eraser in full and in order. A solo encore followed with four completely new songs. It’s not clear how many of those are Thom Yorke or Radiohead songs. Thom played ‘Open The Floodgates’, ‘Lotus Flower’, ‘Skirting On The Surface’ and ‘Judge, Jury, Executioner’. The latter is also the alternate title of Radiohead’s ‘Myxomatosis’ (from Hail To The Thief), but several people have confirmed it’s a completely new song. ‘Skirting On The Surface’ is a song included on the ‘In Rainbows’ recording sessions, but was never played (or released) before. ‘Open The Floodgates’ has been floating around since Radiohead’s 2006 tour. The song was soundchecked (with drums) at Bayside in San Diego on June 27th, 2006 and never heard from again. Until last night.

Thom asked the rest of the band back on stage, played the Radiohead b-side ‘Paperbag Writer’ and closed the show with the two tracks from the new 12″ vinyl; ‘The Hollow Earth’ and ‘Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses’. Copies of the 12″ were sold at the venue for $15 each. Here’s the full setlist… and check videos of ‘Skirting On The Surface’, ‘Paperbag Writer’ ‘Open The Floodgates’, ‘Lotus Flower’, ‘Harrowdown Hill’, ‘The Eraser’ below.

Is he running out of ideas? He already wrote a slightly different version of that song. . . .

sounds like another one he had though

that sounds like a mixture of “the present tense”, “these are my twisted words”, and “follow me around”

I HATE people who talk during songs. What’s the point of going to a precious concert that so many fans want to see, if you’re just a casual jackass there to be cool. Screw off and wait outside or go to a bar or something to socialize. So freaking selfish! I can’t emphasize enough how much I HATE these people!

(ALL CAPS!!!)

Why the hell are people chatting away during the song?? Damn people… if you go to a gig, shut the hell up during the songs!

Thom Yorke is creatively dead.

Not a bad song, but a bit repetitive…
The people talking makes for watching that video very unenjoyable. If I were there around those people, I don’t think I could have stopped myself from telling them off.

October 3rd, 2009

Khristopher, I agree… why come to the show and talk instead of listen… you ruin it not only for yourself but for those around you as well. Discussion for how awesome the music is can wait until in between songs!

I was also at the show, which was totally awesome, and it’s worth mentioning that there was a woman behind the barrier shooting video the whole time. When I asked her what she was doing, she something about a documentary but I couldn’t catch the rest because it was so loud in there. Anybody got some info? It’d be great to see this performance again in higher quality than fan vids.

I also asked her where I could get ahold of the video and she said it was for a film…then she got on stage and went to the back after the show. My guess is it will be of the 3 shows in LA??

Not bad for a being a “rehearsal”.

I can only describe Fleathom & Company’s show as being.. what’s the word..

..oh yeah..

Historic.

But seriously, what’s up with Thom exposing his bare-chest Moz-style?

SubSickAlien
October 4th, 2009

Gosh Diane… no need to wee.

Make sure you upload the footage to facebook if you do though (just for your friends mind).

Bands always break up due to “creative differences”… Radiohead had a good stint.

Panacea, time will tell if Radiohead continue their stint. They can’t be written off yet.

Always loved Paperbag Bag writer – Finally hearing a live version is excelent!!! As for Thom’s new songs. I wasn’t really expecting anything spectacular and I’m too fussed about those particular numbers. Seemed like a good gig for all concerned. Great band.

Lotus Flower is like Follow Me Around worked into a useable song. This and Present Tense should be destined to be on the same record. Love Floodgates too. Angelic voice on display there. Though you can tell it isn’t written fully yet.

I can’t express how much I want Thom to get as far away from the LA music scene as possible. I fear it could ruin him…….at least in my eyes ;) .

Amazing set…….

Thom Yorke from Radiohead

Do what you like
October 5th, 2009

@ManhattanHoosier…

LA Music scene? ? You must be talking about the 80s cause there hasn’t been an LA music scene or at least not one worth mentioning in quite a long time.

Not unless Thom is trying to start one.

Stephen Eric Pearcy
October 5th, 2009

so there is no Thom solo version of Judge?
i’m trying to figure out if any of these are the new song i heard thom singing at the Houston warm up on the last tour.

i still haven’t gotten any help of this or found out if it was bootlegged.

if anyone knows PLEASE help me out!
it will haunt me all my life…..or when i think about it.
