Listen to Peter Gabriel’s version of Street Spirit

We’ve reported about Peter Gabriel’s new project ‘Scratch My Back‘. The Guardian has an exclusive preview of the new album including Radiohead’s ‘Street Spirit’.

Scratch My Back is the first instalment of this project, and sees the 59-year-old, ex-Genesis man cover the likes of Radiohead, Talking Heads and David Bowie. The artists whose songs you hear will be returning the favour by performing Gabriel’s songs on a forthcoming album, I’ll Scratch Yours. Radiohead will record ‘Wallflower’.

You can hear Scratch My Back, including a full version of ‘Street Spirit’ using the widget on the website of The Guardian.

Interesting but I don’t like it much.

  • Frank

I love Peter Gabriel, but this sounds like a bad joke…

  • sinoth

Not impressed with the Street Spirit cover :/ It feels watered down. I hope Radiohead’s cover of “Wallflower” isn’t so ‘meh’.

  • paula

Awfull!!! I mean, I usually like him, but I agreed that`s a bad joke!

i shouldn t comment [ if i didn t like it ] __but i do __it could be a decent version perhaps for a movie that require that mood or even a play . . . something like that . . . out of that context i think he did great but i am personally not interested at all . . . liking the strings though ___

  • Martynium

William Shatners Transformed Man springs to mind, only more laughable.

The worst song on the album.

  • me

painful (not in a good way)

  • Clayton

I was expecting more from the whole album in general… but I agree. It’s pretty bland. Almost the entire project, not just this track.

  • naz

    horrible…

    ehhh…not my cup of tea

  • mark zahn

I don’t visit a radiohead news site for almost a year and the first story is about another washed up artist trying to cover them. ADOLF HITLER COVERS RADIOHEAD111

  • wtffff

i know it’s a serious song, but i laughed at Gabriel trying to hit the high notes and failing, poor guy.

    rather boring than delicate.

Kemoushi thinks it’s not so bad.
    :-)

  • ginger

I think it became a complete different song, but I like it.

  • performingmonkey

I really like it. It’s totally screwed up and you just know Thom will get a kick out of that. It’s like a We Suck Young Blood-style version almost. It’s obviously meant to sound like his voice is cracking and not hitting the notes. Love the more spoken parts!

  • rolling down rivers

Fucking awful, time to hang it up Peter…or better yet write some of your own material you can butcher.

  • Zorbak

Yuk, it’s just so terrible…truly god awful. I’m a huge Radiohead fan, and I used to be a huge Peter Gabriel fan. His version of Listening Wind is pretty good, but I’m starting to feel like he should just hang it up. I can’r imagine Thom Yorke would approve of this atrocity.

Yuk, it’s just so terrible…truly god awful. I’m a huge Radiohead fan, and I used to be a huge Peter Gabriel fan. His version of Listening Wind is pretty good, but I’m starting to feel like he should just give up music altogether. I can’t imagine Thom Yorke would approve of this atrocity.

You got some beneficial ideas there. I did a search over a trouble and learnt most peoples will agree in your blog. If you are an experienced traveler, you’ll be able to know the ins and outs of travel to all parts with the world, and it is possible to have really specific ideas about what you need to see and in which you desire to go.

  • FakePlasticName

Didn’t think it was possible for someone to ruin such a beautiful song, but Gabriel found a way. The cover really is god-awful.
