Listen to Peter Gabriel’s version of Street Spirit

Posted on February 10th, 2010.

We’ve reported about Peter Gabriel’s new project ‘Scratch My Back‘. The Guardian has an exclusive preview of the new album including Radiohead’s ‘Street Spirit’.

Scratch My Back is the first instalment of this project, and sees the 59-year-old, ex-Genesis man cover the likes of Radiohead, Talking Heads and David Bowie. The artists whose songs you hear will be returning the favour by performing Gabriel’s songs on a forthcoming album, I’ll Scratch Yours. Radiohead will record ‘Wallflower’.

You can hear Scratch My Back, including a full version of ‘Street Spirit’ using the widget on the website of The Guardian.

Interesting but I don’t like it much.

I love Peter Gabriel, but this sounds like a bad joke…

Not impressed with the Street Spirit cover :/ It feels watered down. I hope Radiohead’s cover of “Wallflower” isn’t so ‘meh’.

I was expecting more from the whole album in general… but I agree. It’s pretty bland. Almost the entire project, not just this track.

I don’t visit a radiohead news site for almost a year and the first story is about another washed up artist trying to cover them. ADOLF HITLER COVERS RADIOHEAD111

i know it’s a serious song, but i laughed at Gabriel trying to hit the high notes and failing, poor guy.

[...] couple of days ago you were able to hear Peter Gabriel’s cover of Radiohead’s ‘Street Spirit [fade out]‘, but [...]

rather boring than delicate.

I think it became a complete different song, but I like it.

I really like it. It’s totally screwed up and you just know Thom will get a kick out of that. It’s like a We Suck Young Blood-style version almost. It’s obviously meant to sound like his voice is cracking and not hitting the notes. Love the more spoken parts!

Fucking awful, time to hang it up Peter…or better yet write some of your own material you can butcher.

Yuk, it’s just so terrible…truly god awful. I’m a huge Radiohead fan, and I used to be a huge Peter Gabriel fan. His version of Listening Wind is pretty good, but I’m starting to feel like he should just hang it up. I can’r imagine Thom Yorke would approve of this atrocity.
