Mark Linkous RIP
Saturday the music world was shocked with the death of Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse. The frontman took his own life at the age of 47.
Sparklehorse toured with Radiohead on their OK Computer Tour in 1997 and for a EMI compilation album the band recorded Pink Floyd’s ‘Wish You Were Here’ with Thom Yorke.
Colin Greenwood posted a message on Dead Air Space Today.
I was very sad to hear the news that Mark Linkous has died. He and his band toured with us in Europe, at the start of OK Computer, and they were great every night. His first two records were very important to me, and I carried his music from the tour into my life, and my friends lives too. He was softly spoken, with an Old South courtesy I hadnt heard before: he introduced me to Daniel Johnstons music, and the West Virginian writing of Pinckney Benedict. Mark wrote and played some beautiful music, and were lucky to have it. Rest in Peace.

I got into Sparklehorse’s music just before I became a Radiohead fan and Mark’s music has been with me for over 16 years (That’s slightly more than half my life). His song ‘Saturday’ was said to have inspired ‘No Surprises’ and I’m sure his music has inspired many other artists. I had the pleasure of meeting him once and he really was a gentle soul. Rest In Peace Mark Linkous – Wish You Were Here.

Sparklehorse was something different. Viva was out of this world and made me think about music as both an art and a science. Though I hate to highlight a cover song with so many fantastic originals, the Wish You Were Here cover, along with the story, is undeniably part of music history. It will be something many of us keep in our favorites list our entire lives.
Rest in peace

I was really sad to hear this too. I discovered Sparklehorse during the “OK Computer” concert in Paris (18/10/97, my first concert ever) and I have always been impressed by the constant quality and depth of his music. I hope he rests in peace.
