In the past 25 years, there’s been a whole host of astonishingly good albums released. From 1985, to present day, all the musical genres have produced their share of masterpieces… well… except for trance, which is a genre unlikely to ever release anything that vaguely resembles a high watermark for music. If the best you can do is Faithless, then it might be time to concede to your lowly place in music.
And so, Q Magazine (the dentist’s waiting room of rock ‘n’ roll journals) have had a big ol’ vote to decide what the best LP of the past quarter of a century is.
Bizarrely, the winner was turgid borefest OK Computer by Radiohead. That’s right! The best music humans have made since ’85 is an overly long, whining rock record that has all the dead stillness of the inside of an air-conditioning vent.

‘OK Computer’ – like ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’ – is destined to feature heavily in Greatest Ever polls for the rest of time. This means that people in the future will feel the need to own the record because ‘it’s about time I saw what the fuss was about’, before listening to it once and then leaving it unloved and unlistened to forever more because it just doesn’t live up to the hype.
Any album that features songs as boring as ‘Karma Police’ and ‘No Surprises’ is never going to thrill the piss out of anyone’s body… unless of course, you’re one of those blinkered Radiohead fan boys who is prone to suggesting that anyone who doesn’t like the album is probably a fan of Britney Spears or something.
Har. Har. That’s a good one that is.
Weirdly enough, ‘OK Computer’ isn’t even Radiohead’s best album. And ‘OK Computer’ beat off challenges from Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ and Oasis’ ‘(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?’ and ‘Definitely Maybe’. Again, surely everyone agrees that ‘Nevermind’ isn’t even Nirvana’s best work?
Arctic Monkeys’ ‘Whatever People Say I Am That’s What I’m Not’, U2′s ‘Joshua Tree’ and ‘Achtung Baby’, The Stone Roses’ eponymous debut, Radiohead’s ‘The Bends’ and Muse’s ‘Black Holes And Revelations’ fill out the rest of the Top Ten.
Appalling really when you consider that, during this period, GZA’s ‘Liquid Swords’ was released, the first Wu Tang Clan LP, a brace of ace Public Enemy records, Orbital’s ‘Snivilisation’ and ‘In Sides’, take your pick from a bunch of cool Blur albums and not to mention releases from Chemical Brothers, Jay Z, My Bloody Valentine, Daft Punk, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada (‘Richard D. James’ and ‘Music Has The Right To Children’ being genuine game changers in music) as well as great albums from Portishead, Lady GaGa’s ‘Fame Monster’ release and a whole load more…
…and we get a boring list of albums that features a brace of Radiohead LPs, a brace of Oasis LPs, a brace of U2 LPs and a bloody Muse album!
Of course, musical tastes are subjective and these polls decide absolutely nothing, but seriously, even the bores at Q Magazine and their bloodless readership could’ve done better than this?

I wish there will never be a “best band” or “best album”. or best of anything poll. It is so wrong to call anything “best”. Of course I’m sure they did this, so they can rouse people up for rating. But let’s be smart and think independently.

Change from “the best” to “game changer” or “experimental in spirit” all sound better then “the best”.

every cd that dope posted supposedly ‘better?’ than okc isn’t even close. they’re all dated now, they don’t stand up. you COULD argue a few others sure here n there, you could argue The Downward Spiral, you could argue…Mellon Collie maybe idk, Grace is still amazing…so’s In Utero. theres plenty GOOD cds but truly great and still blows you away? no there is no comparison. OKC will always be the Sergeant Peppers of this era. why do you think every music journalist always always uses Radiohead and/or OKC as the barometer to compare all bands and albums to?

I think OKC is considered great through all this years because it really defines this era, these people’s feeling of alienation and cold cynicism (and it’s not just WHAT is told, but HOW it’s expressed).
Musically, we can definitely talk about it. I mean, it’s obviously a masterpiece, but considering the other albums (RH and not) of those decades, something far better than OKC was among them, wasn’t it?
