The Universal Sigh lands in North America

Universal Sigh, Soho New York - Todd SimmonsRadiohead’s newspaper was available since yesterday, starting in New Zealand. A day later The Universal Sigh lands in North America

Albums in North America are released a day later than elsewhere in the world, and the same goes for Radiohead’s new album The King Of Limbs. At selected locations you can get the band’s newspaper The Universal Sigh. In Soho, New York City there’s a long line of people waiting to get their hands on a paper. However, the latest reports claim that there’s no line at Times Square.

The people of Vancouver have to wait another day unfortunately, The Universal Sigh release has been pushed til tomorrow at 1pm due to delivery issues. Don’t bother showing up today.

Yesterday, a separate piece of paper with a unique code was issued with every paper. People who picked up a newpaper in New York, Los Angeles, Monreal and Chicago say that they haven’t received a code.

There’s been some confusion about some of the locations. A location address for Washington DC was slightly off, but has been corrected on theuniversalsigh.com. Several people in DC ended up at the wrong location.

The “Harvard Square” location for Boston’s Universal Sigh is a bit vague. It’s actually the Newbury Comics in “The Garage”, reports @TheKBRT.

We’ll try to keep you updated. If you have issues, questions or anything unusual going on, please let us know via our twitter account @radioheadnews. If you’re not on twitter, post it in the comments below.

No Thom Yorke Sighting today eh!

  • vvvvvvvvvvvvvvVVVVVVVVVVrKt

Page 7 has what look an awful lot like lyrics.

    10 separate fonts in total.

  • Levedad

Radiohead forgot the third world. That´s unfair.

  • Jason

I picked up my copy today in Times Square. There was a pretty big line of people I would estimate about 200 waiting next to the building that had the 1515 address that was listed as a handout location.

I received my paper but I didn’t seem to get a separate piece of paper with a code. Is the code everyone is talking about the barcode on the back?

  • Jordan

About 50 people in line at the Santa Monica location, I hear Ameoba’s worse…

  • Rod

They forget about Latinoamerica, this is not fair.

  • Mark

just an FYI. I live in Vancouver and went to pick up the paper and around 12 they said that they didnt get their shipment in or something like that, but they will have them tomorrow to hand out @ 1pm.

Hope you all see this and don’t waste your time going to get it today.

    cheers

  • Ana

once again, what about Mexico? everyone always forget about us

  • Ursule

There was NO line in Montreal. O_O

  • Joey

Minneapolis had an excess amt. I didnt wait in any lines or nothing. surprisingly they were giving them away at 2 loc. in Minneapolis. Radiohead hasnt played here since the OK Computer tour in ’97….

  • Anna

scored one in Soho and then went up to Union Square and got two more copies – the line in your picture in Soho was pretty substantial but it went quickly and yes, no codes for us i’m afraid

  • http://khristopher.com Khristopher

Arrived just before 2pm at the Toronto location. I was late. Nobody could be found handing out copies, so I was disappointed. I then went to HMV to buy the album, and they had copies in there, so that was sweet. They had maybe 30 copies at most left.

  • Tom

Just to add to that report….

yesterday the google maps image of where the distribution point in Berlin was meant to be situated was incorrect. A few people were thrown off but later found the actual point.

    oh, yeah…
THERE WERE NO CODES IN BERLIN EITHER!

  • THOM MOHT

No codes were handed out in Boston on Newbury St., but you did get a free TKOL poster with a purchase of the CD. Paper’s were passed out at 12:30pm due to the cold weather i believe!

  • Rob

I just got one from Portland…and there was no code.

  • IMGoph

looks like they screwed up in DC: story at the washington city paper

  • Cyn

No codes in Silverlake Los Angeles either… Hmm?

  • Dan

Still bummed about only major cities… driving up to Portland, OR, wouldn’t be worth it. Luckily, there’s a PDF floating around.

No codes and no line-up in Montreal !!!!

  • Stagger Lee

    I got a code in Melbourne…

    What do they mean???

First choice/availability of tickets for a tour at relevant cities, perhaps??? ;-)

  • Symphony

Is there any word on what the codes were for? Didn’t get one with my copy (Amoeba, LA) either.

  • A part of the audience!

I got to be in Hollywood and the atmosphere was awesome. Thank you so much for the record stores that participated and am looking forward to my box set. As well as, A CONCERT!!!

Radiohead, you have made my musical ears joyful again.

It was refreshing to see such young kids love the music and band I do.

    Young kids are cool.

  • upsetter5001

No lines in Ballard. Couldn’t wait to get my newspaper addition and bought the lp. It came with a lithograph. Great day but a bit anti climactic.
The universal sigh is a good read.

  • Rob

Does anyone know how we can get a code if they weren’t handed out with the Newspaper?

  • Oleg

No line or people in the shop in Amsterdam, walked in and simply snatched a copy. Anyone know what the code is for?

  • jorge

seriously guys, what about mexico,. this isn´t fair for us. In Mexico, there are lots of fans too.

  • Sean

I think the codes were originally going to have something to do with the photos they were uploading online (maybe a tagging type thing?) but the idea was scrapped. I think the codes are likely meaningless now. So don’t worry if you didn’t get one.

And Vancouver is last tomorrow. Fun times for me!

  • Billy Ripken

    The curse of DC continues!!!!

  • Stefanie

    http://www.fakeplastictunes.com/2011/03/radiohead-puzzle-pieces-theory.html

Pretty cool theory here, if it is true I would be happy :) since I bought the newspaper album already.

  • Ashley A

No extra piece of paper codes at Chicago but…

There is a QR Code on the back of every issue. It is kind of like a bar code and can be scanned with certain apps on smart phones.

  • the codes give you the record

I believe the codes are limited and give you a chance to get a 12″ two track record that is printed in limited numbers.

    That’s my guess.

  • James

Does anybody know where I can find a pdf for the spanish version? can’t find anything via google

  • brttrdmkr

this whole gig was a joke. a complete ridiculous farce. i got 8 newspapers. people were walking away with handfuls at amoeba. this whole album, everything about it is ridiculous. they are becoming too big. this tour will be intolerable. with all the noob fans they picked up on in rainbows, they have become a hype machine. and it makes me sad. i hope they break up. and soon.

  • _john_

The girlfirend & I got to the Toronto location just after 4 pm…so we missed it completely. Apparently there were big line-ups & it was over pretty quickly…also, they had to move the location across the street b/c the organizers didn’t get a permit to distribute in Yonge/Dundas Square.
However…around 4:30pm, I then went to HMV, and they had a small stack of the newspapers they were giving out with album purchases…so I got one in the end!

  • Dave g

Got one in Toronto around 12:45. Thankfully they had enough since the start time was supposed to be 1 and the started just after 12. No extra code, but no biggie. The paper is cool ANC was glad to get a copy. Will go look for my pic on the site!

  • Tony

Think I can still pick up a copy on Wednesday in Chicago??

  • StaggerLee

I suspect the theory about the codes corresponding to the photos is probably the anti-climactic reality.

  • Luckee

I picked mine up at Union Square in New York. No line, and a lot of people who didn’t look like fans were picking up and reading copies.

It was pretty cool walking over. You’d see more and more people carrying the paper as you got closer, until you arrived and there was a small group of people taking pictures and reading the stories.

Really fun little event. Plus the art and readings in the paper itself are great.

  • Radiohated

    …still no pics from LA Amoeba….its like it never happened….what a mystery…

  • Kent

I didn’t get a code either in DC. Hope it’s not something super amazing I’m missing.

  • Paul

Can’t agree with poster who finds this protracted release idea intolerable – it’s fun. Maybe you expect too much? How are they a hype machine? This reminds me of performance art, it certainly isn’t costing you much. You got 8 copies – why didn’t you only take one? Time for you to drop off the Fan wagon if the band doesn’t stay inside the box you put them in, I guess.

  • Radiohated

    Hey Paul.

I figured it out. Radiohead fans these days feel this sense of ownership and entitlement over the band. They have built Radiohead up to some great height and when the band doesn’t deliver the way the fan (musical stakeholder) wants they totally unravel. I don’t even think other bands deal with the kind of pressure Radiohead have to endure. That is what happens when your a band that tries to create outside of a system that is the norm.

And although I must admit I wasn’t the biggest advocate of the new album there is a realization I think these spoiled fucking fans need to get a life and do other things with their time. Go outside, get some fresh air, and be their own innovative ground breakers!!

Save the planet, save someone, do something, save yourself…

  • Al

There is SO much fan entitlement in these comments in what is otherwise a freaking AMAZING radiohead website. It’s, frankly, really hard to see.

The band isn’t asking you to do anything. You can engage with what they do in as little or as much a fashion as you like. If you want the newspaper, take the time to queue up and get it. If you don’t like it…hey, who cares? It’s only a newspaper, given away for free, by a rock band. A damn good band, but only a band of five friends nonetheless. If you don’t want the newspaper, then hey…here’s some music. You can buy it in the shop. You can buy it online. Whichever one is best for you…it doesn’t matter.

8 songs on the album…4000 songs on the album…again, it doesn’t matter. Sure, you’ve paid money for albums and gigs in the past…but that’s been for those albums and gigs. They’re not a down-payment on any kind of future investment that the band should be making in your expectations.

Sometimes you’ll love what they do. Sometimes you won’t. But that’s ok. It’s not a sign of anything beyond the band trying new stuff and keeping themselves interested so that they are able to continue to stay passionate enough to keep producing the music we love and have loved…whatever form that may take.

It’s a collection of 8 songs. Nothing more. It’s a free newspaper. Nothing more. Be cool, Winston,

Believe it or not…they don’t actually owe you anything. At all. Ever.

  • What does Al know

Radiohead has a lot to owe us.
For one they bought a house with the tickets we bought
They bought a car(several) with all the T-shirts we bought
They flew all around the world on our shoulders
So do they owe us anything. Yes.
We sell their album one comment at a time.
We built the hype and the excitement that is the new album
We worked hard for free to tell people how wonderful this band is.
    So Al SSSSHHHHHHHHH!
I’m listening to the songs we encouraged them to do because we told them REPEATEDLY how much we love them.

  • Al

    What do I know?

I know that you’re taking seriously a comment on a blog.

    That’s pretty weird.

  • Al

And I’m forced to quote myself:

“Sure, you’ve paid money for albums and gigs in the past…but that’s been for those albums and gigs. They’re not a down-payment on any kind of future investment that the band should be making in your expectations.”

  • lifeistao

*** this whole gig was a joke. a complete ridiculous farce. i got 8 newspapers. ***

    Tough love! ;-)
