Radiohead make new track ‘Staircase’ available

Radiohead keep on taking us by surprise and uploaded a new track on YouTube. The song ‘Staircase’ is included in their From The Basement session.

As drummer Philip Selway writes: “And no, you’re not seeing double. The doppelganger drummers are myself and Clive Deamer. Clive has long been one of my favourite drummers and so I was really excited when he agreed to perform with us. Hope you like what we’ve all done.”

You might now Clive Deamer from his work for Portishead, Roni Size and Robert Plant.

For those who want an mp3, download the song without the intro and outro. [thx Kevin]

    such a great song!!!

It’s so lovely! I’m very happy they reworked it from “A Walk Down the Staircase.”

    This is awesome x100

  • jonny

    awesome!

  • Jon Lovitz

This isn’t new. It’s been played before as “CNTRL”

  • A Rat’s Nest

this song sounds amazing, sounds like a more polished, less raw TKOL. Also Ed o’brien seems to have taking a step back to his 90s look, which I’m in full support of!

  • Rud

there’s something very special about this song…

  • Jon Lovitz

Go here and check track #5. It’s been kicking around for a bit now

Beautiful – really looking forward to the rest of From The Basement :D

finally… Those radiohead tunes are back T_T

  • Liam

    Wow. This sounds amazing.

  • AK

This is 5 minutes of sheer tedium. What has happened to these guys? Why are they obsessed with taking the human element out of their music? They used to make music that moved me but now it’s like listening to a computer.

I’m starting to think it’s Nigel Godrich’s fault. Everything he touches turns to sludge and all of Radiohead’s recent batch of music is compressed, over-processed, metronomic fluff, with the possible exceptions of Twisted Words and Supercollider, the only two tracks I can stand.

I respect them for trying something else with their music but I wish they weren’t doing it. It saddens me that I can no longer relate to their music but these things happen. Lots of other people seem to like it.

  • gutted

Never thought i would say this but the last album and this song are total shite. It could be anybody, where as a few yrs ago this band were unique. Very poor boys hope you shape up and get off your multi-million pound arses and write some decent songs again.

  • WacoKid

So we’ve had the album and a two-track vinyl release, we’ve got the remix series coming from next month, and now new material in the From The Basement sessions…. Interesting period of activity for the band. Normally it’s three years of being under the radar followed by an album/tour, then disappearing off the grid again. At least this keeps us on our toes. And of course the material’s good too.

one more . for the beauty to be more immense now . a real KING .

    love .

and 11 beautiful new tracks in our hearts . tkol / butcher/collider / staircase .
i love Clive Deamer as well ! ! i used to make this comment every time i was watching him perform and also the way he moves and feel the music . yes ! ! . . . . . . man . . . . i wish rd would be my friends . i hope they have enough beautiful people around that s all i want to say .

love . what a beautiful track [ on my 5th time over it as we speak ] . leaving now . . . gotta press play again .

    ps : LOVE .

ps 2 : i am repeating this comment on everywhere . i want to be heard how happy a human being can be thanks to the music and the arts .

ps [ 3 ? ] : i loved the IR basement , but this one I NEED AN OFFICIAL DVD OR LIVE ALBUM OUT OF IT ! ! pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • Cher

Yeah, saw Thom perform this song last year on the Atoms for Peace tours… liked it then, like it now.

For what it’s worth, it’s nice seeing Jonny play the guitar again, even if it’s minimal.

  • lifeistao

Agree with parts of every comment here.

My enjoyment for Thom & Ed’s hairdo, and the lighting….

Yeah… man, play some hardcore instruments sometimes, time to inject some testosterone & adrenaline in “some” of your music. :D

  • pntrs

super thnks to kevin . this will hold my anxiety for @the basement for now ! thank you kevin !

  • http://www.fakeplastictunes.com Fake Plastic Tunes

It is definitely time to start up all the crazy TKOL theories once again. You have to think that some answers are going to be revealed here shortly. A TKOL Q&A would sure be nice and you have to think a World Tour will be announced as well.

I wonder if they will perform additional new songs live at each show (or one every few shows deal) and that would be a way they bring the much talked about additional songs.

  • Levedad

Yep, another forgettable song. Since they released “this are my twisted words”, Radiohead is missing. At least the one i like. Anyways, I am thankful for all the amazing music they have done. I think its normal to stop being a genius at some point.

  • pntrs

    levedad levedad . ahgrrrrrrrr ! ! !

becoming more simple and low profile [ even when this is not the real case ] its more genius than genius . just remember that .

they want to dance and feel the rhythm in their blood cells . isn t that genius ? specially at their ages ? it is a real challenge and a real step further the ” normal ” adult life . but at the same time having a ” normal ” adult life . not sure how to explain this .

for me this is absolutely ” out ” of the normal . everyone can do the other stuff . but not too many can do this levedad . i see it that way . it would be so easy just to repeat what they did b4 on the albums ” you like ” . this is more lot more challenging . just sharing how much ‘ I ” enjoy it .

    peace and dance .

  • Theories

enjoy reading some of the theories on following site, some really dig it with deep analytical thinking, not for me, i’ll burn my brain out doing that, but i manage reading them:

    http://thekingoflimbspart2.com/?page_id=103

  • lifeistao

    Yes! Thanks a bunch, Kevin!

  • Levedad

pntrs, they have done many completely different albums and I loved them all. I wasnt expecting them to repeat the formula, but this turn they made, although I totally respect it, I just dont like it. I cant see the band, this new music does not create emotion on me. I dont see any genius in TKOL, is just music that its ok but not a single track blew my mind away. And it takes way more than just be “out of the normal” to be genius.

I still support Radiohead, I wont forget all they gave me, but I cant just follow them blind. This time I think they did not do anything great, and I need to say it too.

  • Nooj

I remember hearing this live and thought that is not a very imaginative song as it basically used the same chords as Reckoner, as he evidently even admits while performing “As you may have noticed I’ve only got one trick on the guitar now.”

But what they have done with the song in the Basement version is just bloody brilliant! I can not WAIT for the FTB sessions!!!

  • pntrs

and i agree ! ! i am happy you re expressing yourself – i just cannot believe how can radiohead and myself be so wrong about our likes . . . . if you understand what i mean – they are incredible musicians , i am nobody and very lonely when it comes to find similar of my likes on people around . and i still cannot believe how can we be so wrong about feeling all this new material so immense and beautiful . i just dont understand – i loved a post i read yesterday . will try to find it . bback .

  • pntrs

Have you truely heard everything in this album yet?
You will need a good pair of headphones and a good musical ear to hear everything but it’s there.

//// the one who broke this spell\\

this is from ” creep ” at mortigi tempo ” .

  • pntrs

levedad radiohead is not even my favorite band . and i dont follow blind . i just cannot believe people dont appreciate this , which i think it really is so beautiful .

my fav bands are fridge and tarentel . [ just for the records and for the ones b4 that considered me a blind fan ] .

  • Levedad

They are incredible muscians indeed, I am not saying the opposite, but this time, they just didnt make it for me. And its fair enough, they are humans afeter all.

  • Levedad

And dont worry, my ears and earphones are great :)

  • pntrs

i am not worried and didn t really mean that about you , but in general . i posted that because i thought it was another view of the situation . it was from a person at mortigi tempo posting that . i thought it was interesting

Not saying this is good/bad, right/wrong, but Rh has become mastermind of calculation.

They know how to build anxiety and hypes, and they need to play this more mindful, cause it could end up with bad tastes from those baits. And I hope that’s not the case….yet.

Colin’s been listening to John Maus lately, as indicated from his recent playlist. Sounds like they’ve all taken some influence from Mr. Maus. I like this track.

  • JDM

    http://blogs.bbcworldwide.com/2011/06/21/radiohead-the-king-of-limbs-live-from-the-basement/

It’s been confirmed they performed the whole of TKOL, Supercollider, Staircase and THE DAILY MAIL <3
There were also horns, probably during Codex/Bloom. Can't wait to hear the Daily Mail though, I loved the solo version Thom did.

  • kyosti

same chords as reckoner? What the hell are you talking about. He meant the way he was playing guitar, when he said that.

The energy this performance created – it’s so intense and alive. Clive Deamer added a lot too – amazing -2 drummers! I can’t wait to see them perform the whole king of limbs and any extras. This is happening now – we are here to experience this. I think the reason some people seem to be upset is because they don’t normally listen to similar kind of music. For those anti-electronic out there – maybe you should try to dive into some of this music – maybe you could even try to understand it? What makes a guitar more human than a synthesizer? What makes acoustic noises more human than a computer sound? What IS more human? This performance defines what I’d like to see from humans lately, but where I rest – it’s obsolete.

  • music junkies

so… the acoustic version is called “Let Me Take Control”…. interesting.

    great playlist, thx!!

  • Subalien

Wow, that was damn good. It should of been on the Album.

  • Tom

Does this mean that there will be another vinyl release – The Daily Mail and Staircase. And will they get remixes?

I think that we might end up with

    TKOL newspaper album – £30/33
    (TKOL CD – £7.99)
    (TKOL Vinyl – £15)
    SC/TB 12″ – 11.99
    Staircase/DMail 12″? – probably £12 based on SC/TB
    4/5/6 x 12″ remix – £8 – £32 – £48
    Live FTB Album? – £8?
    Live FTB DVD? £12?

This is all guesswork, I have no idea whether they’ll release the From the Basement as a CD/Download/DVD though if I were them I’d release it on all formats.

Its speculation about the Staircase/Daily Mail getting a 12″ release, and we don’t know how much the remixes will sell for – they’re £7.99 online I’ve seen, but if SC/TB is £12 on WASTE then maybe these will be too. I think £12 is way too much for a two track vinyl, but if thats the only place and way you can sell it then they’ve got a monopoly haven’t they.
It’s an expensive project it’s easily £50 for the newspaper album and some of the records.

I think that they ought to, in the future, offer a box set, like the next issue of the newspaper, with all the releases since the original newspaper.

  • Lovethistune

This song is amazing I’m tired of this assholes
Complaining, if you want radiohead to sound like In Rainbows,HHTT,kid. A or Ok Computer why don’t you just go listen to those records instead, its been done before move on or shut up, this does not sound like anything they did before prior King of Limbs and I heard every record including b sides and unreleased material. I guess this is the new generation of idiots like the old one that complained about the Beatles when they released the White Album or Sargent Peppers

  • Carson

Loving it, very much, and also excited by Thom’s new bout of Re-Mix-A-Matosis!

I;ve been listening to an alternate track listening for TKOL that begins with:

    1. Bloom
    2. Staircase (mp3 of Basement)
    3. Supercollider
    4. The Butcher
    5. Lotus Flower, etc, etc… Not that I have any issues at all with the original, but I like the way these flow….

  • tom

a little like the inception OST song 528491 . near the beginning.

wht was this not on the album and a song like feral was ???????????????????????

  • Xian

Since OK Computer, they invariably include a sort of ”instrumental” song. Feral is that in TKOL.

Staircase, seems to me, as if it was worked almost especially for this new session, I don’t know.

The song and the performance are cool. Everyone plays flawlessly, the only exception is Ed, his guitar does nothing, or maybe I need to re-listen?

OF COURSE ED LOOKED BORED!!!! :D absolutly right,,,, this song need to be remixed,,, anyone? some dj?¿ this song is begging for a remix

  • Joe

Man, they really are shooting for just average lately.

  • primalchaos

    @ Ale Gaddor

Are you suggesting a remix of a remix?? :D

Dramatic heavy drumming doesn’t seem to fit in the theme of TKoL….

  • _john_

This is really nice. Wish this had appeared on TKOL (and that’s no insult to TKOL, which I love)…but this tune, even on first listen, seems a lot more layered & technical, along lines with ‘…twisted words’.

When/where was this played before? It was mentioned above that this is a reworking of ‘A Walk Down the Staircase’ and/or ‘CNTRL’…do these songs/versions exist somewhere? Anyone have links?

Ed looks a little redundant at the mo, smidge more guitar would be nice and i’m someone who likes synths and electronics

  • against demons

I’m starting to think I’m the exception with Radiohead fans these days. I love tkol, the only tracks I get bored with are feral and Morning, Mr. Magpie. I like both songs, but they run on too long for me. Codex, Lotus Flower, and The Butcher more than make up for what the album lacks in my opinion. And yes I know The Butcher wasn’t on the official album. I’m with the others; from the basement for In rainbows was awesome – still watch it on youtube to this day, I hope Radiohead releases a dvd or something similar for the new session. They have always been better live than on their albums, for me. I have seen them thrice now and expect to see them a fourth time. The only problem I have with them is they never realesed an album version of Big Boots. I have given up on that ever coming to fruition.

  • AK

To Lovethistune – So you think it’s better that people just say everything the band does is great? That’s just mindless worship. If someone likes this song or TKOL or anything else the band does, that’s great. Similarly, if someone doesn’t, that’s also great. There should be debate and discussion about Radiohead on a Radiohead website. If everyone just declares everything the band produces to be the “best thing ever” it’s boring. Being a Radiohead fan is not about loving every sound from the band. It should be about analysing what the band does. Or are you afraid that if you analyse TKOL and the associated tracks too much you’ll find it’s not as good as you say it is?

I think TKOL is a boring and lifeless, electronic mess, ruined by a dependency on Nigel Godrich. The band has taken some OK song and some not-so-good songs and Godrich has ruined most of them with heavy-handed production and mixing. Feel free to tell me why I’m wrong but don’t attack me or other people for having an opinion you disagree with. Show some critical thought and intelligence and make a case against that opinion.

  • lifeistao

I’m sure it’s just this song, Ed doesn’t have much to do with. The camera should focus on the ones playing instruments at the moment. :D

  • DanielMG

AK – Totally agree with you, but i do like TKOL

  • mpas

    @AK
I can agree with a few things you mentioned. For example I know that I love all Radiohead songs no matter what, but I don’t think that Nigel Godrich has ruined Radiohead. Thay made their best albums with him and now all the sudden he is the one how mess up everything?! I don’t think so.

By the way everyone who is thinking about why did they not releasled this song or The Daily Mail on TKOL should remember what the band said TKOL and The Butcher were made under the TKOL session plus they had a lot of unfinished songs. After TKOL they decided to finish them.

  • russtbags

this song is like a seven layer burrito, and when you bite into it man does it taste good! Can’t wait to see the rest of this session. In Rainbows from the basement is just behind Kid A for my favorite Radiohead Album. I hope to God I get to see them live soon…

  • A

Ed is playing some of the reverby-shimmery-trumpet sounding guitar. Jonny plays one of those parts, then goes into the arpeggios and Ed takes over.

  • WozzA

Even before The Daily Mail was revealled to be in FTB I assumed there would be a second new track, it will come out on 12″ and a free download will become available to those who bought the newspaper album.

I also like the staggered release because it tempts you to relisten to TKOL every month or so and every time you listen to it again after a little break it sounds just that bit more wonderful. For me it’s already climbed from “just better than Pablo Honey” to “probably better than Amnesiac and Hail To The Thief” and just about has Kid A in it’s sights now.

  • Mikey

I dearly hope this is just experimenting with a new sound and not bringing another person in to keep tha band together like the beatles did with Billy Preston.Just an observation.Good track all the same.

  • secretdrone
