Radiohead play surprise show at Glastonbury Festival – Live Report

Radiohead are playing a surprise show at the Glastonbury Festival this evening (20h, G.M.T.).

The band was rumoured to fill the surprise spot for a while, but the appearance remained uncertain till a Radiohead spokesperson confirmed this afterrnoon. The band will play Park Stage, the same stage where Thom and Jonny showed up last year.

Day one of Glastonbury will see performances from U2, Morrissey, Wu-Tang Clan, Mumford & Sons and Primal Scream.

Live updates below. Don’t forget to follow @radioheadnews and specifically @radioheadlive on Twitter.

Setlist:

01 Lotus Flower
02 15 Step
03 Good Morning Mr. Magpie
04 Little By Little
05 All I Need
06 Separator
07 Give Up The Ghost
08 Arpeggi
09 Staircase
10 I Might Be Wrong
11 Bloom
12 Reckoner
13 Daily Mail

Encore:
14 Street Spirit

Clive Deamer was added as a sixth member of the band and played almost all of the songs with the band as an extra drummer. Thom Yorke said the band had been ‘really nervous’ about this gig. They seemed to have a few sound problems during Lotus Flower at Glastonbury.

BBC explains why the Radiohead show wasn’t broadcast: “Radiohead told us that they wanted their set to be a special live moment for fans. They didn’t want it to be filmed. Apologies.”

I called this so long ago! They’re on right before Caribou, do you think theres a chance of a collabiration? I wonder whether they’ll just play TKOL right through?

  • DDDDance

Come on this is just a rumour and NME doesn’t know shit. This is just speculation and it is very unlikely.

Being a RH fan and living in the US is a painful life. :sobs:

  • Carson

I picked a bad lifetime to be living in California

  • Tom

You guys in America got Atoms for Peace and the Haiti concert, it’s all well and good having them play at Glastonbury, but it sold out months ago, so no one who wants to go specifically to see Radiohead can.

  • Silas

Yeah. The US is pretty big. Not all of us can get to Cali. I know. Not everyone in England can get to Glastonbury. Plus, I live in Florida, and RH rarely makes a venture down this way. At least in the panhandle.

  • fan addiction?

W.T.F., stop whining, Radiohead can’t fly every where, that’s why we have YouTube!

  • JDM

I’m not actually sure if it’ll be shown on tv. They are on the park stage, which is never filmed…But then again, seeing as it’s Radiohead, they might have a change of heart. Hopefully.

  • lifeistao

    Hahaha…. this cracks me up!

    @super P from pipilandia WTF & LOL

It’s so fucking awesome to know the lads are back in touring-mode. If these rumors are true, and I believe they are (since a “spokesperson” for the band has confirmed this) I am very much looking forward to knowing what setlist they will play tonight.
Will they play every TKOL song? Or will they save some for From The Basement? Perhaps they’ll go with the classics and then surprise us with a couple of unreleased songs? Either way, you can’t go wrong…. PEOPLE!! IT ‘S RADIOHEAD!!!

  • Silas

Shut it, fan. They don’t have to fly everywhere. At least come to this neck of the woods once in a blue moon. Atlanta or New Orleans is very manageable for me.

  • Dahhh…

Since they fly transatlantic, you would think they can at least stop by somewhere in US east coast, right?

  • Amryhood

FUCK. I wonder how tell in advice is uncool for them..

  • Muldfeld

Tonight was supposed to be U2′s first appearance at Glastonbury and the band was thinking about making its setlist more subtle and not the usual dumbed down affair we’ve had at U2 shows since 2000. This was gonna be U2′s night, but Radiohead has taken the spotlight and will show ‘em how it’s done!

(Personally, I’d rather see “Achtung Baby” performed in its entirety than anything else, but I doubt Glastonburyers will see it that way.)

  • caet

if this turns out to be true i may cut myself.

Dares not speak his name… That version.

I hope they do not do a tour. Just stay home. Play some close personal concerts and DON’T BURN OUT
and make us wait another 4 years for new tunes!!!!

Relax. Strum your guitar and piano and play us some tunes!

  • Muldfeld

Exactly, Amnesiac What?; the worst thing for this band to do is tour. I’ll always take more new studio-recorded music over a tour that’ll exhaust the band.

  • lifeistao

  • JDM

    @kyosti
It won’t be shown, the park stage isn’t filmed. The only way we’ll see it is through shitty handy cam footage or if you’re actually there.

  • Dahhh…..

I’m just glad i’m not there, look at the scary crowd.

  • Muldfeld

    Right back at you, lifeistao.

@drew, I recently checked the times and U2 takes the stage at 10 pm, but Morrissey definitely conflicts, going on at the same time as Radiohead.

  • http://www.fakeplastictunes.com Fake Plastic Tunes

A lot of negativity so far towards this set. The Sun straight up bashed it as well.

  • JDM

    @fake plastic tunes
I understand them wanting to get the newer stuff out there, but half of the people in the crowd weren’t even proper Radiohead fans, they just want to hear old classics like Just or Creep. For a festival, they should have played older well known stuff with the occasional new song.

  • Dr. Faust

All the negativity comes from the BBC not filming the show. You all make laugh.

  • Muldfeld

I only wish the band had prevented folks from jutting cameras/cellphones (including the blinding glare) in front of people’s faces to film things and confiscated them and not the BBC’s cameras.

I miss going to a concert and not having every jerk try to capture every bloody moment at my expense. People don’t know how to be in the moment at concerts anymore, especially younger audiences.

  • Head of State

Personally, I think that the set-list kicks many asses, especially for a surprise exhibition. I really don’t know what is wrong with people nowadays.

  • http://www.fakeplastictunes.com Fake Plastic Tunes

@JDM very good points there. The thing is Radiohead are a moving forward band, and they have no need to be crowd pleasers. Festival or not they will always give a ‘Take it or Leave it’ type of performance.

  • Head of State

Plus, people are mumbling about the lack of classics. What do you call “15 Steps”, “All I Need”, “Weird Fishes (Arpeggi)”, “Reckoner” and “Street Spirit (Fade Out)”?

There are musical acts that would strangle their mothers to be able to write (or perform live) one of those songs!

  • CDD

This is the best set list I’ve seen them play in a LONG time.

  • mb

agreed with the last two comments, it’s fucking glastonbury for fucks sake… chilled small performance, wish i had been there. although i too hate the camera-phone situation… where are the videos!?!?!?!?!?

  • Liam

It’s the sort of playlist I was expecting. Was people really expecting an OK Computer/Kid A set? I’m extremely jealous people got to listen to the King of Limbs live for the first time, must of been amazing. The only thing I was expecting was maybe Karma Police to keep the older fans happy but they got Street Spirit which is, of course, a classic. Well done Radiohead!

    Haha…. exactly!

Not trying to poop on people’s enjoyment and freedom, but they need to do it more mindfully with others around, just want to enjoy the moment. But again, we are talking about drinking and smoking, there we got a mixed crowd. :P

  • kyosti

You know what – Fuck the sun. That article, if want to call it that, is so fucking pathetic. Calling it disappointing because they didn’t play ‘THE HITS’. This is fucking radiohead. Do we need to go through this again – it happened with kid a, and now all over again. A great majority of people don’t try to understand other music, because either they’ve been taught that way, or the general consensus is against it in some manner. They tried playing new songs, and tried it in a different way. This isn’t the 90′s anymore. This is 2011. I feel that the rock formula/regular guitar music is so worn down that we’re not really going anywhere with it. These ‘types of critics’ (not all) are the ones that are keeping us in the same bullshit bubble. Just in general – complete negativity. People forget to listen with their own ears, and see with their own eyes – - – - – - –

There’s a reason Radiohead aren’t doing interviews. No, not some big secret. The reason is – there’s no reason to constantly tear apart a piece of art, dissecting it – over and over again. There’s no need to explain what it is, or anything really. We should be moving forward from our old ways…listening and feeling on our own. Why let art become labeled by someone else – it’s not represented by a number rating of how good it is, or an article on a website. You don’t deem anything as a mistake, or ‘bad’ because of anyone else, really.

blah blah…sorry that sun article was so atrocious. Makes me feel sick.

  • Sarah Jane

@staircase, yea I realized that after I posted it and my page refreshed, sorry. The other video wasn’t very good and too short.

  • Cortex

They don’t play Feral :-( . “The Daily Mail” seems to be the secound “You and whose army”, just a great song, can’t wait for the From the Basement Version.

  • 5onthe5

Who would be dumb enough to go to that secret set and expect two hours of “classics”?

If they were going to do that they’d be headlining the Pyramid Stage and charging a million pounds. It was 100% obvious that this would be a new, less showy setlist.

It sounds amazing. Sorry if casual fans have their expectations disappointed but this was entirely predictable.

  • 5onthe5

I’m hoping there’s decent video of I Might Be Wrong though.

  • George

    @5onthe5

    agreed!

  • sata

Anyone else think The Daily Mail is terrible?!?! Exactly the same template they’ve used for Y&WA, WSYB… Awful!

  • Mark

Terrible? What a wonderful version of The Daily Mail. Such a great tune.

  • Mark

The setlist is just great. No Bestof-show. I hate it to hear all the well known songs over and over again.

  • WozzA

Had they headlined the Pyramid stage and played that set I could understand some complaints from the audience and press. But they weren’t. They played a small stage a good 20 minute walk from any other, were 3rd on the bill and played 8 tracks that have never been heard live before. If the people who turned up expected the hits they were just plain daft.

I almost wish I didn’t have my 10 month old daughter. I would have been there if I didn’t.

  • JDM

    @Sata
Whilst I love the daily mail, it is more or less the same set up for Y&WA, a slow build up and then an explosion of instruments near the end. Still really like it though, at least it wasn’t made all electronic and stayed on piano.

  • Zach

It is frustrating to no end to hear people talk about them playing the “hits.” These guys have been playing some of these songs for 15 years. It’s called progressing. Name one band that is as innovative as Radiohead, and can create so much debate among fans of music. I saw them in St. Louis in ’08. And yeah there was a couple of songs I would have like to have heard. But I came away with an experience I’ll never forget… I’m just waiting for the sad day when they decide to hang it up and not play shows again. I’m still hoping they make one last go around here in the states… These people got a treat by seeing one of the greatest bands of all time. Sorry they couldn’t play “Creep” for you.

  • not K but i agree

    @ mister K :

i dont know who you are [ shhhhhhh ] but do really think THESE ! ! ! people would understand your words ?

good thinking man , but in the wrong place . this blogs were made for the crappy way of thinking [ if any ] , not for the ” go further ” way of thinking .

  • Bananaslice Reverb

Interesting. After I became accustomed to KOL and the album “clicked,” I too, find myself growing tired of conventional guitar music. We need some new instruments here. Kind of backed rock music into a corner. Any Flying Lotus/ Cosmogramma fans? Would have never been able to aurally digest that had it not been for Thom & Co’s latest effort. Isn’t that the definition of mind-expanding music? Or maybe it was because I ate the 625 pieces of tiny artwork.

  • Ian

Why do people want to hear the ‘hits’. They’ve been playing the more commercially well known songs for over 14/15 years. Why not let people who haven’t paid any attension to the band since Kid A have a listen to what they’ve been missing out on.
The BBC Glastonbury coverage rights does say bands can ask not to have some songs and whole sets. I understand and respect their reason to not want the material being transmitted, as they are still working out how to actually play the material live, although, it does annoy me. In the mean time, I shall sit and wait for the Basement recordings. After that, I shall wait very impatiently for the tour announcement.

  • Cher

So um… where is that Separator video???

  • pntrs

@ Bananaslice Reverb : on your words [ Isn’t that the definition of mind-expanding music? Or maybe it was because I ate the 625 pieces of tiny artwork. ]

    that was the bomb ! ! lmao ! !

  • Alex

I have to say I’m a bit disappointed by The Daily Mail, not because it’s a terrible song or anything, it’s just their new stuff has been so wonderful and exciting, this doesn’t really match up :-/ Can’t wait to hear live versions of King of Limbs stuff though

  • Swisser

I’ve seen the band a fair bit trying my best to actually go every night they play when they visit where I live and to be honest Id love the band to crack out the B sides or new material even if its a work in progress. Ive found my self not wanting to hear paranoid android every time they play not saying its a bad song lol but Id rather something un predictable

  • fishinhesea

I think what makes the daily mail so good is that it is very different from the stuff they have been making lately. I think its an amazing song, and I like what they did with the breakdown. instead of making videotape 2, they made something original. Perhaps this return to an older form will silence the tone-deaf assholes who can’t understand their newer and more complex musical arrangements. At least for a few minutes.

  • lifeistao

*** The BBC Glastonbury coverage rights does say bands can ask not to have some songs and whole sets. I understand and respect their reason to not want the material being transmitted, as they are still working out how to actually play the material live ***

It makes sense, now it’s now total bullock, just half of. :D

  • lifeistao

    Oops… meant to type:

It makes sense, now it’s “not” total bullock, just half of.

  • lifeistao

    @ Bananaslice Reverb

Haha… I’ll pop in one of those magic blotters every time when a music just doesn’t seem to agree with me. :D

I think you’ve made some interesting points.

But personally I think any musical instrument, be it conventional or not, has lots of potential in expansion in new territory. Musical instruments are like human voice, depending on how/the style we want to express them. I’ve listened to a human voice could make so many amazing sounds, so as classical instruments that sounds very avant-garde. So the idea of “going forward” or being progressive, doesn’t mean we need to abandon conventional instruments, instead finding new sound & expression.

    :-)

  • cortex

@lifeistao you said touring will exhaust the band, but i think they enjoy it too much to play in front of an audience. Even if they play the new album a hundert times. At the end of the Tour they may think. okay enough of that, lets change the direction. And then we will get a new album, not a on with electronicbeats, something slowed down, like “Wake me before they came”, “Follow me arround”. I think they need to exhaust to get new inspiration.

  • pantrus

@cortex : uffffff are U still with those topics ?

  • amy

These little bits of magic on YouTube are making me crazy. I can’t WAIT to see more of them. I can’t wait for From the Basement. And I will weep tears of joy when I finally get to see these new songs live. In person.

  • lifeistao

Don’t you just love the jeans and shoes he wore, got to get myself one! :-)

  • lifeistao

    @cortex

I so agree with everything you said, except those titles of their future songs… :D

I was agreeing with Muldfeld. But to be honest, I’m so torn by wanting and not wanting them to tour, I won’t go thru great length of explaining myself since they’ve been said and done on earlier posts. But thank you for being sensibly open for questioning. :-)

  • lifeistao

    @ cortex

But oh, wait… I gather you’re not too crazy about TKoL, humm… that, I can’t agree with you. :-)

  • Muldfeld

@cortex, well, Kid and and Amnesiac were quite different but produced from the same sessions. And the gap between Hail to the Thief and In Rainbows and then the latter and TKOL needn’t have been as long. They weren’t experimenting during all that time; a lot of it is getting sick of each other, having to spend quality time with family to avoid alienating wives and traumatizing kids.

I’d be much happier if Radiohead just kept churning out albums without leaving their families for long, which is what happens with a tour.

  • lifeistao

You know, basically Radiohead is not tied to record contracts, excessive promotions & touring. If they decide to tour, they do have the luxury to be selective without killing their spirit.

and Muldfeld, I’m so glad you brought this up, “families”, that should be enough reason to reflect their decision on touring.

  • lifeistao

If there’s a perfect way to see Radiohead’s concert, that leaves no carbon footprint, no prolonged families separation, no exhaustion, that would be in my own “fantasy”, and I’m all good with that.

    ;-)

  • cortex

@lifeistao “But oh, wait… I gather you’re not too crazy about TKoL” I am crazy about TKOL, I love it like every of their albums form Ok Computer to now.

After watching the Glastonbury video of Lotus Flower, it seems like plenty of Radiohead fans made it to the gig, you can hear them singing Lotus Flower to help Thom to pick it back up (nice & sweet), after the distraction of technical error.

    @ cortex

I don’t know why Radiohead have always played Street Spirit at the end of a gig/concert, it’s such a dreaded, dark, despair meaning song but melodically beautiful…..

Cool now updated with “Lotus Flower”, “15 Step”, “Morning Mr. Magpie”, “Little By Little”, “Street Spirit”, “Bloom”, and “The Daily Mail”

So that is 7 of the 14 songs. If anymore become available we will add them as well.

  • lifeistao

I meant to say “dreary, depressing”, i/o dreaded, sorry.

  • lifeistao

*** it’s such a dreaded, dark, despair meaning song but melodically beautiful….. ***

I take it back, it’s actually not despair, it offers hope at the end, but still melodically beautiful and heartbroken…. *_*

Holy shit, I was there. And holy shit, it was legendary. I feel blessed.

  • RadioMad

Oh, I’ve recorded 7 videos entirely.
Actually, all of the TKOL songs and the two unreleased songs – except Give Up The Ghost. It was supposed to record, but halfway through I noticed that, well, it wásn’t…
But yeah, be sure to check out my youtube channel tomorrow (http://www.youtube.com/radiomad1). I will upload all these videos (front row!) (Lotus Flower, Good Morning Mr. Magpie, Little By Little, Separator, Staircase, Bloom, Daily Mail) throughout the day.

  • W_R_

WTF? 6th member? More TKOL songs than songs from any other album combined? What a travesty. Radiohead is dead. I never thought I’d see them fall off so much.

I NEVER thought I’d see them with a 6th member. I NEVER thought I’d hear an album as bad as TKOL from a band so good.

Sufjan fell off too. I know music piracy is a huge issue.. but where’s the good music anymore?

  • lifeistao

    @ cortex

“yeah, I’ve never been on a Radiohead Concert.”

    I don’t believe that! :D

  • Aeaouia

I’m very impressed with how these songs sound live. Even at this early stage.

Makes you wonder what the album would have sounded like if they’d taken the songs out on the road for a while prior to recording them, like they did with In Rainbows.

Looking forward to the BBC performance thing.

I felt a bit alienated by Radiohead for a bit there, but I’m coming back around.

Some good quality uploads by this kind person here: http://www.youtube.com/radiomad1

Here is a Television Report about Wayne Mc Gregor, the cheographer of the LotusFlower Video.

    http://videos.arte.tv/de/videos/wayne_mcgregor_getanzte_gedanken-3991638.html

It’s in english, with german subtitels.

  • lifeistao

I had no idea his dance was choreographed, like most fans, I thought his dance was improvised. After you mentioned it, now I can really see Wayne’s movements in Thom’s dance.

Wanye’s innovation in choreography and use of music thrilled me, those dancers move like aliens from other planets, or Reptilians.

I had trouble to view the video, but managed to read the article below, by using Google translation from Germany to English, works great.

cortex, thanks so much for sharing that, it’s a treat. :-)

  • lifeistao

haha… meant to type “German”, not Germany.

  • p

    god bless Aeaouia

  • ernesto

His dancing reminds me of early David Byrne stuff from Talking Heads.

  • lifeistao

Strangely, Atease never created a post for this subject, Thom’s dance video and choreography, it would’ve been very interesting subject. Or maybe I missed it?
