    10 years too late

Now it’s time for Live, U2 and in about 5 years Radiohead. Yes.

  • Temporaryism

I always loved that version of “E-Bow The Letter” with Thom. It’s one of my favourite R.E.M. songs, but maybe it would have been even better to ave Thom on the recorded version over Patti Smith? Either way, it’s a classic. Just one of many in their catalogue.

    RIP REM

  • Alex

Horrible, Horrible News. I haven’t bought an album of theirs since UP and I expected this for awhile now, but it still hurts to hear!

  • music addict

Never been a great fan of R.E.M., do like some of their music, maybe I just never took time to explore their music.

But their exit is clean & beautiful, like Led Zeppelin, although Led Zeppelin was quite short lived in terms of all their talents.

Stipe for President! jk, that guy is a jackass! Only Automatic for the People is listenable in its entirety. All other albums were pretty scarce on consistency. Like the typical recording industry fare, a good song or two and a bunch of bore. At least they never went into full generic trash rock like U2.

    >calling it day

    Radiohead should follow suit.

    xox

  • mIT

Stipe for President! probably not, male fashion show model, yes! haha…… his clothes are interesting in E-Bow the Letter (with Thom Yorke).

  • The World Is Flat

Thom did his best stuff while friends with M.Stipe.
Modeselektor is destroying him now…..Funny you never hear about Thom hanging out with M.Stipe anymore. Guess he’s too Diva for Stipe these days….

  • danton

i just want to die (yeah, i’m a teenager again)

  • Khristopher

Maybe it’s because of the video Michael Stipe made? Haha.

First show I ever went to was R.E.M. with Radiohead opening in St. Petersburg, FL. Sad day today, but good memories

  • ecoteat

Wow, I’m caught off guard by how sad this makes me. :( Maybe an REM marathon is in order this evening.

  • Amnesiac What?

    RIP REM
    RIP Radiohead……

Is the world going to fall off its axis?

If it did I wouldn’t be suprised.

  • my bad?

isn’t that “clothes” is the only thing mentioned? errrr… people read into things more than what it is, don’t you think?? ><

  • mi6uel

Radiohead on Colbert Report on sept 26th!!11!!!!11!!! WWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Kurticus

Why are people saying RIP Radiohead?
One album that disappoints people and all the sudden they are dead? In Rainbows was phenomenal. If you have actually been paying attention to Radiohead through their career then you would know that their next album will sound nothing like King of Limbs. And in my opinion REM went out with a bang. Their last two albums were great.

  • pantrus.

kurticus [ K ? ] , who said the last album disappoints people ? there s only disappointment of ” some ” people in here and in a few blogs only , but i dont think or read from musical reviews or so that the album ” disappoints ” . Remember these are just blogs where lot of people just come to have fun or to even ” bother/play ” other people . The people that are really into music and even musicians around the world love T K O L . Anyway i absolutely feel you are saying that in a positive way , and its great . but believe me , the word out there ” specially from people ” that really follows great music is that TKOL is fantastic , and an incredible piece also when brought to the ” live shows ” as well .

I felt exactly like Alex did last night. No REM albums for me since Up, which I still think is very good but overlong. And that’s 13 years ago!

Now, if you’d asked me about REM last week I’d have said, “they should have split up years ago” without emotion, but I still felt sad when I heard they’re no more. Because that’s something else in our lives which was always in the background and is now history. Probably an age thing. :) :(

As for the Radiohead link: for me, there was a definite “passing of the torch”, however cheesy that sounds, between REM being THE big band in the US and Radiohead taking their place: the 1998 Tibetan Freedom concert.

Radiohead, riding the crest of OKC, blew the crowd away that day. REM, sans Berry, opened with Airportman & torpedoed the whole thing. The only bit of brilliance Stipe could muster was when he duetted with Thom on Lucky.

So, will Radiohead go down the same route? The bottom line is, they’ve been around for 20-odd years as a signed band, and even longer before that: whilst I’d be lying if, for me, it hasn’t seemed so exciting since the Kid A/Amnesiac days, & I don’t think TKOL is brilliant, I still felt huge expectation last night when Thom said he was making an AFP album.

Maybe the people who love REM and were devastated last night are the same kind of people who will always think everything Radiohead does is great.

For me as a Radiohead fan, I’ll probably never feel the same way as I did 10 years ago, but if they walked away now, it’s an incredible body of work. Bands should not go on forever!

  • not me

Bands should not go on forever! . . . .

where is that written ? and even if it is . . . . is that a fact ? what the hell is that ?????

  • Carl

    @ not me:

The only band that has ever proved this to the contrary is The Fall. No-one else.

And even then, The Fall are about 30 different bands with one man in charge. That’s entirely beyond compare.

Don’t get sentimental, it always ends up drivel….

  • mIT

boy…., i don’t take excitement and anxiety very well, already getting antsy about tomorrow’s presale, still no time posted for presale. hopefully they’ll post time tonight sometime……

  • mIT

i always wonder why concerts/shows held in the middle of the week, i never like it that way, i guess at least 29th is closer to weekend……

  • Kurticus

    @pantrus. Yeah, I love TKOL.

  • new yorke

I recommend people not just to go to the concert, after the concert, give yourself at least 1 or 2 days to venture out New York, so so much to see……., I’m personally not too crazy about Time Square, there are lots of other interesting neighborhoods to stroll around…

  • mIT

Sorry I’ve never been to Radiohead’s concert, I assume their concert setup is like standing/dancing party floor arrangement, correct?

That said, there’ll be no seat assigned needed, right?
