Watch Radiohead perform Lotus Flower & Staircase on Saturday Night Live

Radiohead were the first musical guests on the new season of Saturday Night Live, performing two songs.

The band returned to SNL after more than 10 years, playing first single Lotus Flower from their new album The King Of Limbs. Radiohead were joined by Clive Deamer again on drums and played Staircase later on the show, hosted by Alec Baldwin. Staircase debuted on their From The Basement session, also with Clive Deamer. Also check this line of people hoping to get stand-by tickets for the show. Videos are below. Next television appearance will be Comedy Central’s Colbert Report. And there are two Radiohead live shows to follow at NYC’s Roseland Ballroom.

the two drum kits sound terrible, a total mess!

  • melty

i feel like they dont like what theyre doin
    am i wrong?

  • D

not many bands can go to SNL and play a b-side…

  • how to disappear completely…

If you’ve followed Radiohead over the years you should notice how T.Yorke is a totally different person. Its all about his fashion and ego. Too cool for school now it seems. Just seeing the difference from the REM videos of him compared to now is just sick. He’s become Bono or something. He sang better back in the day too. More passion, less ego, etc. Just don’t understand. I know some people are gonna talk shit about what I’ve said, but if you really look at it you’ll see what I mean. I know he should enjoy what he is doing but it doesn’t even look like that, it just looks like he’s even “cooler” than the rest of his band now. I see no connection between him and his bandmates. Punch in collect money and bunch out. He doesn’t even establish eye contact with the rest of his band or anything, just total disconnect. EMPTY…

  • Rabit

The performance was great, and the Internet is full of haters. Go analyze your own tragic life.

  • dear_idaho

Lotus Flower didn’t sound good at all :(

  • Cher

Staircase is SO far better than anything on The King of Limbs…

Also, I love the pictures of the band. They all gave their best Zoolander face.

Seriously, a friend of my got tickets to this. Crazy.

  • how to disappear completely…

You are such a blind fanboy Rabit. Lap up anything they do right? Your such a fucking lap dog for the band. Keep lying to yourself. I love the band enough to call out their shit they do now. You may have just started following them but if you haven’t your totally lying to yourself. I know its not just me either, I’ve had this discussion with many friends and other “fans” and they agree, some do not like yourself, but many do. As long as fans just blindly follow and praise everything the band does, the quality will just go downhill.

  • how to disappear completely…

Totally agree with you melty. Its obvious there’s a disconnect with the band. There is little chemistry between the members when they play now. I’ve seen them several times live, and there is something different about the band now, and its not good. Thom is becoming a total DIVA, a Bono character now. They should call the band THOM YORKE now instead of RADIOHEAD.

  • 30 Century Man

I am no hater but even I, a huge fan, must admit that this was a sub-par performance. They sounded quite rusty tonight. Perhaps a case of jet lag? Whatever it was, I’ve rarely if ever heard Radiohead sound this awful. Just listen to the first vocal transition in “Lotus Flower.” It sounds like Jonny or somebody forgot the beat. And the Basement performance of “Staircase” was far superior to the SNL version. Hope they can get their act together by the time they tour in 2012.

  • Cher

    @how to disappear completely

I don’t know if I can agree with you. My friend was at the show and said that before they played, they all hugged each other, filled with smiles, and wished each other luck. The waved at the crowd and seemed… nervous.

That’s possibly what you’re seeing. They were nervous. They haven’t done live TV in YEARS, especially in America. I think they were so focused on making it good, they seemed resistant to look at each other.

Now, if they sounded good while doing it… that’s another story. Lotus Flower was kinda terrible vocal wise, but Staircase was well done, and only proved to me that it deserved to be on The King of Limbs or have an actual release.

  • spike

from 1.43 on lotus flower the synth sounds so out of key – I think it ruins the performance. The chorus saves it.

    Staircase sounded great.

Also thom and ed really need to go for a different hair style

  • arkid fire

weird that the extra drummer appears on the photos as if he was part of the band

  • super

Why is Ed still in the band? It’s embarassing.

  • Attta

You think Staircase would have made it on TKOL if they didn’t release it so dang quickly?

  • Crespin

What we’re seeing here is an exodus similiar to the Kid A era when “we lost” the OK Computer crowd. TKOL is a great, great album with the best lyrics since Amnesiac. The SNL performances (especially Staircase) were great beyond words.

Remember when you were going to RH concerts in the 2000s and you looked at some of the people there and you had to suppress the thought that RH fans aren’t as cool as you thought they were? Be honest, you know it happened. Well, those are the folks complaining right now.

Bon voyage fellas. Hopefully you’ll stop posting on the websites soon.

  • how to disappear completely…

Thanks Cher didn’t see that interaction. But I do miss Thom when he was much more humble and wasn’t trying to be like Bono. Will he DJ a slick fashion show next, or be in a Cristal commercial? Just getting sick of the “cool guy” he’s become. I think he’s too hip now to do anything with JayZ but I could be wrong the way he’s become nothing would shock me. Total hypocrite. Seems like he’s become everything he’s spoke out against in the past. Shit even his environmental stance is weak. Carbon footprint…blah, blah, blah. Think he’s having a midlife crisis.

  • SpinningPlates

De drummer is part of the band, this is genius work, shout the fuck al you negative people who have there musical opinion about the band. I’m sure most of you never even sang a song or held an instrument. So. That’s gone. Now listen to the performance again and again.

  • how to disappear completely…

CRESPIN I pray for another KID A. That would be the best. My argument is about Thom becoming a fucking DIVA. The hair, the dancing, the fashion, the way he makes love to the microphone….meanwhile the singing (going down hill, out of tune, pride in his vocal performance, no true passion, etc.). That is my argument. Seems like since his hair grew out his ego followed. I expect to see him in all vinyl next. Your so cool Crespin…so hip. I’m not concerned about being “cool”, going to a concert. Is that what you really look for when going to a concert?!! Wow, maybe you should focus on the music you paid for instead of looking at how “cool” or not the audience is. You sound like a hipster loser lame ass.

  • Unborn Chicken Voices

if only they would let Ed sound more electric, particularly during the intro to Lotus Flower. It would be amazing if Ed just let that part rip.

  • Captain America

They nailed both of these songs. Whoever is saying otherwise is just trying to provoke those of us who see truth in music and understand what makes a great performance. Have they let me down in the past? Sure. They are a rock band full of human beings. Did they in this case? Note even close. Great job fellas! I know others that totally agree. Keep it up!

  • how to disappear completely…

A lot of Radiohead fans are fucking zombies for the band. Just because I didn’t like a performance, or the latest album doesn’t make me a hater. I don’t have to suck the bands dick to be a “fan”. You fucking pretentious hipster assholes can’t even admit when something the band does is shit. I love the band, and I’m pissed about some things they are doing. I’m aware most bands have moments like this, and this is just opinion. All you have is “haven’t held an instrument” or “being a cool audience member at a fucking concert”…how totally lame are you guys?!! The funny thing is you both Crispin and Spinningplates are making assumptions about people that disagree with WHAT THEY SEE. Not making dumbass remarks about WHAT THEY ASSUME. You both sound like groupies. Go suck a dick zombie fans…

  • f.o.b.

I agree, they may want to consider to open up with another song i/o Lotus Flower, Thom’s voice couldn’t open up at LFTB, neither in SNL. If they feel they might get nervous, pick a song more in mid range to warm up his voice.

I usually don’t watch SNL, not familiar with how good that show’s sound stage setup. TKoL is like ambient rock, to carry out the sound mood is crucial, but I didn’t feel the mood. But Stair Case was good.

It seems Clive has been officially announced being one of Rh’s members last night??

I still feel their humbleness and shyness at the end of show when everyone on stage, they didn’t crave for spotlight, and I still like that about them.

ps. **** He doesn’t even establish eye contact with the rest of his band or anything, just total disconnect. EMPTY… ****

Thom may also suffer TMJ problem like myself, my guess?? :P

  • Edward

As much as I am a Radiohead fan (or addict better!), I have to agree with some of the comments above. The chemistry does not appear to be there and I keep wondering what the rest of the band thinks about the musical direction they’ve headed. If they’re OK with it than so am I, I just think this performance did not do justice to the geniusness they sometimes showcase they are. Where did the magic and fireworks go??

Hoping for better times/performances in 2012!

  • Edward

    sorry typo: “…showcase they HAVE…”

  • kyosti

I have to ignore this comment section for the most part…but for you to constantly argue that he’s become a ‘Diva’ is odd.
Remember when you first saw Thom twitching and going crazy on stage on snl during kid a…well, these songs have a different energy, so that’s why he moves this way. He wants people to open up.
yeah and you also make it sound like Thom has a huge ego or something…which he clearly doesn’t. You can tell just by looking at those promo videos.

American television is a very strange thing.

    anyway, I’m out -

  • Reuben

Some of you guys are so full of yourselves. You don’t like it and therefore you see “the truth” of the band. What is that? Only “true fans” can criticize? Jesus.

In my opinion the performance was only okay. I like King of Limbs, but they have made better albums.

  • how to disappear completely…

oh Kyosti, you know you love American television…don’t worry you can still be “hip” if you watch American televison. So you think Thom is doing what he’s doing to “open people up”? What promo videos are you referring to? I wonder if you asked the rest of the band off camera if they think Thom is becoming a “diva” I would love to hear their honest thoughts on that. Every other member of the band seem to be as consistent as they were when the band started…except Thom. Thats all.

  • aw

    @how to disappear completely…

I’m not calling you a hater because you don’t like what theyre doing or what Thom’s doing, so don’t call me a fucking zombie for the band just because I’m enjoying what they’re doing and what Thom’s doing… kind of. Your making assumptions too.

  • music addict

I think there are a lot more fireworks going on here, say… than the band? xD

  • how to disappear completely…

aw have we met? Never even spoke to you before. If you like “everything” the band is doing and have done thats fine. I PERSONALLY think to constantly praise a band even when they come up with a dud, is a little like sucking a zombie dick. MY OPINION. Thats what a fucking blog is for. Thats why you come on here to talk shit too. To state your OPINION. But a few of these assholes on here are hipster zombie fuckers…period. And thats okay too. I mean did you like Pablo Honey? Everyone gravitates to a different sound, period, album and thats okay. Doesn’t mean if we disagree with a phase or album we will stop listening to what the band puts out in the future.

  • Freddy

Radiohead – RIP. It’s time to bow out and move on. Focus on your families and enjoy the money you have made. I used to be such a fan, but they have lost me. I don’t even know what they are trying to accomplish anymore. The performance last night should have been their farewell performance. Thanks for everything you have done over the last twenty years, but your time is over. :(

BTW, stop with the political bullshit and just try to play decent music to keep what fans you have left. No one cares about your green peace efforts.

  • Bork Laser

I sometimes post in the forum!!

  • Reuben

    @Freddy

Because you don’t like it doesn’t mean that others don’t. your opinion isn’t any more valid than mine. you’re pretty much saying that because you don’t like what they’re doing now, they should just break up.

  • Rodrikk

    Yorke moves like Jagger

  • pretentious electronica fan

The rest of the group was solid, but Thom seemed to have an off night. That happens, I just wish it would quit happening on SNL. They should have opened with Staircase, much easier song to sing and better to warm up to. Maybe they can do better on Colbert.

  • new yorke

    @ Rodrikk

    haha…. agreed, and a bit of Bjork….

  • how to disappear completely…

Jagger could just sing better when Jagger was moving like Jagger.

Jagger connected with his band better too. He didn’t treat them like they were background…

I think T.Yorke is too concerned about flopping his hair around and singing out of key.

  • new yorke

**** I think T.Yorke is too concerned about flopping his hair around and singing out of key. ****

    LOL!! flopping his hair….

  • pretentious electronica fan

We get it, How, Thom is an egomaniac who is all about appearance now. I think you may be overreacting just a tad. I think it is that he is just way more drugged out than normal. With age catching up to him, he needs to slow down before he burns himself out.

  • how to disappear completely…

I don’t think the hipster zombie fucker’s know it. I would just like Thom to maybe really connect with his band mates instead of Modeselektor/Four Tet/ Madvillian/Flea and just concentrate on making the best album he can with his CURRENT band. Or just split up and go his own direction completely. I know Phil is doing his thing and Johnny is doing his as well but I think they should really get back to each other and make something utterly fantastic again! An undisputedly wonderful album that is flawless beginning to end. That would be the dream anyway.

  • how to disappear completely…

…They all have the talent to do it as well. They really are one of the best bands of the last 60 years, it would just be nice to see them bounce back 100% for just one more album. Complete focus and amazing playing. No more fucking eps, or remixes, or gimmicks to make more money. They have plenty of money. They have an undying following of zombies that will eat anything they shit out. Just shit out a pearl. A beautiful shiny pearl. That all of these zombies can wear around their necks. A shiny pearl necklace glimmering in the moonlight.

  • pretentious electronica fan

The hipster zombies were never really the crowd Radiohead catered to, they just did what hipsters do and jumped on the bandwagon when it became sheik to like Radiohead. The good thing is that they will bail now that Radiohead is not so sheik. This place is always where Radiohead was headed, which is easy to say with hindsight, but just look at all the collaborations Thom did back when Radiohead was still playing alternative rock music. That seems like forever ago now. The people he plays with have changed, but it is nothing new for him. AFP is a new development, but I am not so sure it isn’t a healthy one. These guys have been together for nearly thirty years now, most marriages don’t last that long. It is either booze or drugs that is causing Thom to act erratic of late, in my opinion. He is old enough to be someone’s grandfather now and needs to settle down a bit, in my opinion.

  • Carson

Thom is nervous, obviously, as anyone who has followed the band closely over the last decade knows – they get “nervous” often, and Thom does especially. This has come out in a large number of interviews over the years – they were even super-nervous at Glastonbury.

They also happen to be one of the few bands that will admit to such things, which usually means they aren’t ego-maniacs. Thom is very reclusive and often doesn’t like performing…doesn’t anyone posting about Thom’s “ego mania” and diva-ness, know anything about the band and Thom?? Apparently not.

The “Thom as Diva” crowd are bunch of fucking **MORONS** and since everyone apparently has a right to their special “opinion,” that’s mine.

Some more reality checks for supposed old-time “fans” who are so turned off by their new direction:

    1. Thom always dances like a freak and has for a long, long time. Some people like that. Once again, if you’ve followed the band any length of time, you’d know this already. Oh well, if you don’t.

    2. Some people like TKOL. If that’s not your scene, that’s fine too, but how many more fucking “opinions” do we really need to hear about it?? I don’t LAP up everything they do, ass wipe, I LIKE what they do, because they are artists, and frankly, I like their art…

    3. YOU fuckers trying singing Lotus Flower live… Good luck with that. That’s a tough song for anyone to pull off..

    4. Thom as Bono?? that’s a sterling analysis.

    5. Wake up idiots – they’re not a “rock band” and haven’t been for a long time. They do their own thing; Ed has written that he had to get over that back in the Kid A days…they make sounds and music. If you want guitar solos, go to listen to something else.

Oh yes, we don’t want to shut down your cherished, insightful “opinions” god forbid, but I don’t spend my time on fan sites of musicians and bands that I am no longer in to, talking shit about people’s creativity and music. Get a fucking life or go out and make something better. Critics = those who cannot create but only destroy.

  • how to disappear completely…

Carson your talking about Thom 10 years ago. Time to pull your head right out of your ass cheerleader.

  • jacob

you know, honestly tkol is my favorite album since kid a.. but these performances were kinda lacking. i think it has more to do with how they were mixed and what not. because they played so amazing on those tkol basement sessions :) i know they can do it, everyone just has a poor performance every once in a while.

  • Damn

    @how to disappear completely…
You know man… I understand what you are saying. I don’t agree but I certainly understand. Stop to say that “YOU ARE JUST SAYIN’ YOUR FUCKIN’ OPINION YOU DICKHOLES!”.
Because you know… you are insulting a bunch of people here, for nothing. For what they like… the problem isn’t your opinion. It’s the way that you are writing it. This hate, this condescension and especially this intention trial that you are doing to Thom Yorke.

Did you listen to the interview with Gilles Peterson? DId you listen to Ed’s fans interview? Did you read Jonny’s interview before he worked with Penderecki? They are all fine. They are all enjoying themselves. They said it… so, Thom isn’t becoming a diva (or if He really does, I just don’t give a shit. If I enjoy his music… who really cares, really?), the band still enjoying themselves with each other.
The ONLY problem is that you don’t like TKOL. That’s it! And it’s okay! I understand that! But stop complaining and be SO mad when you just didn’t like the album…

Anyway… sorry for the moralizing part but… I just wanted to share my opinion…? Is that it? :)

    Have a nice day…

  • Miguel

huge radiohead fan and i thought the performance for lotus flower was a bit eh…but they brought it back around with staircase. I love TKOL, but lotus flower seems out of place. Seems more like a Thom Yorke solo song. Replace Lotus Flower with Staircase or Daily Mail and you would make me a happy camper :)

  • how to disappear completely…

Damn, it is more the fans on here that ALWAYS LAP UP EVERYTHING THE BAND DOES EVEN IF ITS SHIT!!! PERIOD. OH YES AND THOM’S ANTICS OVER THE LAST SEVERAL MONTHS AS WELL. My argument is to stop talking shit about people on here that DON”T like everything Radiohead fucking does. Because if we ever dare to express an OPINION about the quality of a live performance or an album, or a collaboration, we are assholes that “dream about Radiohead’s “rock” years”. I love OK Computer-In Rainbows wonderfully just like pre OK Computer. I wouldn’t have followed them this long if I didn’t . But I’ve read this AtEase bullshit for years now and these dumbass fans (zombie fuckers) and not all by the way, that won’t admit when something the band does is garbage. That to me is just lying to yourself. And for why? To be a hipster fuck that can sit back and say “oh I’ve loved everything the band has done…before you?” I just don’t get it. Sorry I’m old and confused I guess. I was finishing my senior year in H.S. when the bends came out, I’ve grown with the band, ONLY DEVOTED. But I’ve seen them do better work. And maybe every fucking groupie asshole on here will fight me but there are a MASS AMOUNT of people that would agree with what I’m saying. Will they make something better in the future? I think they are capable…they have all the talent, resources, and experience to do so. I know THOM has been prancing around on stage for years, but SOMETHING HAS CHANGED in him. Maybe he’s more comfortable with himself on stage, maybe he’s permafried….I don’t really know. You go back and listen to the care and quality he put into his live singing in the past and it is there, FOR ALL TO HEAR. Just because they are going into a instrumental/beat type direction doesn’t mean he should get lazy on the mic. I’ve seen the interviews that are referred to, I am happy to see the band splinter off and do their own thing. I JUST WOULD LOVE TO LEAVE ONE OF THEIR CONCERTS THESE DAYS AND FEEL LIKE I JUST WITNESSED SOMETHING MAGICAL THAT JUST HAPPENED. Dude I live in NYC now and the idea of shelling out 200 bones to see them doesn’t even sound good anymore. I feel like their best years are behind them, and I PRAY to be proven wrong. Yeah people like TKOL and thats okay. I love a few tracks on it as well. THE BUTCHER…amazing! Wish it could have been on the album, probably wasn’t done yet. CODEX fantastic!! LOTUS FLOWER powerful!! I just want to hear and album start to finish that anyone could easily put on their top 5 list of all time. I would love to go to a concert (In Rainbows my last) and feel like something epic. That hasn’t happened for a while. I PRAISE THE BAND FOR GOING IN NEW AND EXPERIMENTAL DIRECTIONS, ALL GOOD MUSIC HAPPENS THAT WAY. Just want everything to connect….thats all. AND WANT THE ZOMBIE FUCKERS TO SUCK IT….

  • D

The one thing that makes me want to stop being a radiohead fan…

    …is other radiohead fans.

(Otherwise I quite enjoy just finding new ways to appreciate what they do…sometimes more, sometimes less).

  • Eme

People think far too much. These are new songs they’ve not toured them so they’re probably nervous and trying to play them correctly so you’re not gonna get the same relaxed atmosphere than when they play Karma Police that they’ve played a million times.

Clive was in the picture because he was with the band. They might want him for a tour but there is nothing official been announced just because he was in the picture? What did you expect the happen them all say “get out the picture you’re not really in the band”… this is the real world and that stuff doesn’t matter apart from on the internet.

It’s clear thom struggles a bit with LF live, but he sounds good on staircase and he improved throughout lotus flower, the second “chorus” was much better for eg.

If you don’t like TKOL then fine, but stop talking nonsense.

  • Peter

I liked the performances, Thom is often a bit off key live, nothing new. The rest of the band seemed a bit lost in TKOL from the basement too, the album doesn’t have a lot for them to do. I like Thom’s new confidence, his style, his dancing which is very much moving to the beat. He is an artist, he is a bit bizarre, always has been. I think this is just one facet of Radiohead, they change with each album. Granted Thom has pulled away more in the last few years with side projects but this will end. Hopefully they will collaborate for many years to come, I’d also like to see more contribution from the other band members in future offerings.

  • PK

hey “how to disappear completely”, it’s alright I talk shit about you since I’ve been a big fan of your comments, but not all of them, and not anymore at least, and I think you suck ass to think Thom Yorke is Bono just because he wears a suit, right? Right??

  • PK

and btw, hey “how to disappear completely”, and I hope you are not one of those tall hipster people standing in the front row crossing your arms judging the band and not listening to the music, and got pissed off if some real fans get in front of you.

Because I hope you’re not going to be seeing the NYC shows, otherwise, go fuck yourself.

  • PK

and go disappear completely, please. We don’t need you here. The world doesn’t either.

  • new yorke

    Rock out! Peace out!

  • aw

    @how to dissapear completely
You contradict yourself with every post. You assume that becuse people like tkol, they blindly follow rh and like everything they do. Your generalizing people because theyre saying they enjoyed tkol. Then you say that your ok with people liking tkol. and then you say that tkol is garbage as if it that is a fact and once again generalize everyone who dissagrees with you in a zombie fucker catagory. Your a idiot.

  • Thom Yorke

    I’m Thom Yorke

  • aw

    Apologies for the typos

  • new yorke

oh…. hi, Thom, we love you and your band Radiohead!! for better or worse! long live your spirit!! hope to see you in NY.

are you guys going to march/protest on Wall Street while you’re there?

  • Thom Yorke

Well think I, (Thom Yorke), will continue being Thome Yorke, because I’m Thome Yorke.

  • Henry

@ how to dissappear completely. We get that you don’t like what the band are doing now, What bothers me is the way you are insulting everyone who disagrees with you. You said already that it is just your honest opinion, so why can’t you allow others to have their own opinion? if you made you point and just let it be, i think your opinion would have stood out greatly, but you are trying to force anyone who disagrees with you a lap dog and what not. I like what they are doing now, that doesn’t mean i am a lap dog. Just because you and your friends don’t like it doesn’t mean everybody should dislike it too. And pls stop hiding under “I am a big fan too” if you are a big fan, and you don’t like this new radiohead/thom just state you opinion and let it be

  • new yorke

    tho me yor ke ?

  • Thom Yorke

sometimes Thom Yorke spells Thom Yorke’s name wrong. hey it happens

  • http://www.claylancaster.com CAL

Lol @ previous post “they nailed both songs”… nope. To me, OKC is their masterpiece, but I was able to really appreciate and get excited about most of their transitions. Personally I thought IR was a huge step in the right direction (maybe 15 steps, har de har).

TKOL was the first RH release where I felt totally underwhelmed… with Lotus being the only song I really go back to or put on any playlists.

But they botched Lotus big time. Why did it need 2 drummers? It felt cluttered and sloppy. It worked way better for Staircase.

Thom’s vocals have changed over time. I loved his older “pretty” style, but I also really dug the shaky sound… kinda like Michael Jackson (he would dance in place during his vocal takes, which gave it more of an emotional sound).

But now, Thom is just out of tune and has no power behind his vocals. I feel like he’s too focused on his crazy dances now and looking cool for the audience.

It’s one thing to love a band and be loyal and open-minded (I’m all for that), but it’s another to be soooooo in love with a band that you can’t see when they f’k it up. They’re human, and they will f’k up. I think RH just had this amazing string of awesome records, so people basically got the idea that RH is invincible. They’re not.

I still love them, and they still hold the “favorite band” slot for me, but this TKOL era is disappointing.

  • how to disappear completely…

CAL said it better I guess than I did. I think its just the fucking hipsters that are getting all sensitive about the shit I’m saying (or not reading everything I have said). Yeah stance is the same ANYONE WHO BLINDLY LOVES EVERYTHING (LIKE THOMS TWIST,TWIST, TWIST SHIT CAN GO FUCK THEMSELVES.) MY OPINION. Would love to meet you sometime in person PK. Any chance you live in NYC? Lets meet up sometime….

  • Mister E

Radiohead’s making music that’s years ahead of most everybody else, and you petty, fickle idiots are on here bitching about their haircuts and their on-stage interaction.

Go enjoy a Coldplay concert if you want coiffes and smiles.

  • http://www.claylancaster.com CAL

    MIster…

I would agree with your first sentence up until this year. The biggest issue I had with TKOL was that, for the first time, they DIDN’T do something ahead of anyone else. It sounded like a rehash of Amnesiac with a few IR flares thrown in.

  • Radiohead

Truce, everyone, we fucked up on Lotus Note last night, what? oh, sorry, that was Lotus Flower……, time out for now, we’ll going to stroll around NY, enjoy the city, until tomorrow will meet you on Colbert…, wish us luck.

  • http://www.claylancaster.com CAL

Every single one of my favorite bands (in different genres) eventually put out something that made me go “meh”. Some bands did it more than once, and some never recovered (i.e. Our Lady Peace).

RH is a phenomenal band, but no one is perfect. it’s ok to be critical of your favorite band (intelligently critical, I mean). It doesn’t make you any less of a fan. In fact, I have infinitely more respect for fans who openly say “you know, this wasn’t what I had hoped for” rather than loving every single little noise that comes out of the artist. To me, those fans that can be honest demonstrate that they actively listen and actively pay attention.

Sorry, this wasn’t a TKOL review thread… the bottom line is that no, the SNL performance wasn’t awesome. That was compounded by my opinion that TKOL wasn’t awesome either.

Gonna watch Colbert to see how they do. But again, it’s hard to be excited about them potentially nailing songs that I think are mediocre for RH and RH fans’ current expectations.

  • Please could you stop the noise

    @how to disappear completely..

I had to do a double take on your posts they look exactly like my thoughts ha ha . I couldnt agree more its scary I actually posted about thom becoming bono a few topics back probably on the twist release. Are you me by any chance? :)
I know how you feel having a go at other people blindly following remixes and other below par releases but they are allowed like what they want I honestly feel sorry for their ears this summer.
Im starting to hate majority of stuff released where as I couldnt get enough a few years back I hope this is just a bad patch. They are allowed a bad patch as in my eyes they havent fucked up till now everyone is allowed one but if the shit keeps coming and contradicting save the planet crap keeps coming ill be hoping for an announcement on them calling it a day.

PS wish I lived in New yorke id defo love to meet up htdc

  • You know nothing

What really annoys me is how people seem to think they know how the relationships in the band are from two 5 minute videos. You don’t know them! Stop gossiping about them, this isn’t fcking high school!

Maybe some of them are going through some sort of crisis, who knows? You’re not helping by declaring everything they do sh*t. Show some support, even if you don’t like TKOL. In Radiohead we trust.

Ok, Lotus Flower could be improved, but Staircase sounded good.

I liked it. I thought it was awesome to see them perform songs. I love Staircase and I’m very happy they played it.

  • muzzatron

atease – please disable comments!!! It’s getting out of hand and is making your site very unpleasant.

  • performingmonkey

Wow, Thom actually learned how to sing Staircase!! That’s one positive thing out of these performances.

Btw, one reason they seemed crap is the lame sound mix. It’s the worst mix of RH I’ve heard for ages and whoever was in charge of it needs slapping. Lotus Flower is dodgy enough at the best of times but the mix made it dire.

I wish LF wasn’t the ‘main’ song from TKOL cause every single performance of it is shakey.

  • how to disappear completely…

Muzzatron people can express and say whatthefuckever they want. What are you fucking CHINA. Repress what people have to say. You don’t like it go to Green Plastic. In fact I beg you to go to Green Plastic, cause I don’t care what you have to say. If I think Radiohead is tanking so fucking what, they’ll bounce back I’m sure. You fuckers that wanna keep fighting me can keep running your mouths. THESE ARE OPINIONS ASSHOLES!!! WE DON’T HAVE TO FUCKING AGREE ON EVERYTHING. I wont support what I think is shit THATS MY WHOLE POINT!! FUCKING HIPSTERS MAKE ME HATE RADIOHEAD MORE THAN TWIST….twist is pretty bad.

  • Stimme der Vernunft

    @ how to dissapear completely
Seems you overreact a little bit. Calm down & please don’t generalize & don’t use so much nasty words. Maybe you like the new Wilco record.

  • Mr Stagger Lee

People are entirely welcome to their opinions, of course. I’m a massive fan, and I’m very sure I’m not a blind follower of fashion. The only post Pablo Honey RH record I think is sub-par is HTTT.

Personally, I dont really understand why people don’t love KOL, it’s taken them in a genuinely new (percussion-driven, almost tribal sounding) direction, and I think the songs are beautiful. The Basement recordings are just fantastic, Bloom in particular. Right now, its my favourite of their, this may change, but thats the beauty of it all. Yes, Thom’s trendy-dad Djing antics may be a little cringeworthy these days, but I get it when I hear the band say they feel they’ve been reinvigorated, and I cannot wait for the live shows. Perhaps we can calm down a litle and accept differring opinions, eh?

  • how to disappear completely…

    Fuck you…

  • Peter the second aka nobody

dear mister @how to dissapear completely

Even though i follow you on most of the things you say about the Lost flower recording (the hair, the dancing, the singing…i mean dzjeezes..) I think it’s time to let this go. You’ve become like, the DIVA of this page, don’t you realize? Do you think you’re sooo important you have to reply on almost everything that’s being said here? My god i can’t even image how big your ego must be.

    Seriously dude…

  • how to disappear completely…

My ego is massive!! And if someone steps up and talks shit to me i’m gonna respond. Period. The way to shut me up is to stop talking shit. I’m gonna go look at myself in the mirror now…

  • Carson

    @How to disappear completely…

Listen dude, just not into your mass generalizations and name calling.

In general, I like TKOL. I don’t like “the twist”. I like Staircase, butcher, supercollider, and, yes, even Lotus Flower – live – but I found most of the remixes AWFUL, with the exception of Jacques Greene and a couple of others. Yes, TKOL is not a “masterpiece” like In Rainbows or OK Computer, but that doesn’t make it “shit” either. It’s an experimental direction. I am sure their next album, if we’ re lucky to get one, will probably be more to your liking. I am not a fucking hipster – I am as old as Thom and have been with them since Bends…i try to give them the benefit of the doubt and open my mind to things, even if I don’t like them at first. Sometimes I still don’t like them. Sometimes they grow on me…

  • how to disappear completely…

Hey Carson aren’t you the same asshole from earlier. Gave some long explanation talking lots of shit generalizing with profanity too I might add. My mind is open numb nuts, but does it mean I have to like the shit. God for all of you having something to say about me, you really don’t know how to read up on shit. I mentioned I LOVE THE BAND, BEEN WITH THEM SINCE THE BEGINNING, SAID I DIDN’T MIND MOVING IN NEW EXPERIMENTAL DIRECTIONS, SAID THERE WERE TRACKS ON THE NEW ALBUM I LOVED (BUT DIDN’T LOVE THE ALBUM AS A WHOLE). But I will talk shit all day, which I have with regret to people who are gonna give my OPINION shit. I will also give fans shit that PRAISE EVERY FUCKING THING THE BAND DOES. Last but not least, don ‘t really care for T.Yorkes fucking antics as of late. Thats it. Thats it. Its you fucking shitbags that want to keep this going by talking shit to me, not reading the whole post, and saying ugly shit back. This started very carefree and simple but I agree has gotten out of hand, namely because twats like yourself can’t keep your fucking trap shut. Period. So fuck off, and write some shit to someone else who has a differing opinion than yours….asshole.

  • How to disappear completely

And you’re all hipsters because you dont like what I like.

  • Mike.

IQ of this board is dropping quickly.

  • How to disappear completely

Mike , now I have to make another comment. Look what you’re making me do.

  • Mr Stagger Lee

I think we get your point, that you’re entitled to your opinion, and your opinion is that you think people follow them blindly sometimes, and that this is frustrating. It’s not a complicated point, at all. It’s a fair point, too, I know many people who feel that way too. I agree people do sometimes follow blindly, I personally think this album reinvogorates their sound, but i’m aware i’m in the relative minority on this, and that’s ok.

I dont think people are objecting to your opinion, as such.

I think what people object to is you making yourself sound like a complete c*nt.

  • Mr Stagger Lee

But thanks for keeping me entertained, I suspect its all just a laugh and you’re really an amiable guy.

Maybe we can go for a pint sometime, share some radiohead gig stories fmo the good olde days?

  • karen

Wow, some people on this board seem to have anger management issues. Chill out, people. At the end of the day, it’s only a band we’re discussing here, not war crimes and political oppression. Let’s just agree to disagree and move on.

  • how to disappear completely…

Hey “How to disappear completely” go grow an ear on your back you fucking clone. Use your your own name taint…

  • Muldfeld

I’m not a big fan of Thom and the band’s work since after “Hail to the Thief” and I was really upset that Thom is focussing more on “Atoms for Peace” than a really solid Radiohead album.

However, I don’t think he’s an egomaniac or diva. I think, like a lot of people, he tries to be cool to avoid coming off as too serious or to get along with people — i.e. familiarly calling radio interviewers “man” and stuff.

At some level, all artists have to have enough egocentrism to prioritize their vision. Thom pushed the rest of the band into a new course for “Kid A”, etc, and that was great. Right now, he’s overly obsessed with electronic music and solo work, which isn’t so great.

However, he always comes off as quite humble. I think he’s trying to avoid expressing his sadder, more depressed side publicly. Maybe he feels less depressed or just has become more private. I do miss this because I could really connect to feeling that way, so I hope he gets back to it. However, I don’t see strong evidence that he isn’t connecting with the band the way he used to when the band DOES work together. I do wish he only did work with Radiohead, but I’d rather he get his electronic casio beats out of his system on solo work than break up the band.

I’m a huge U2 fan, but Bono’s become a real prick since the late ’90s — not so much in terms of how he relates to the rest of the band because they’re all addicted to money and superficial fame nowadays. It’s more that Bono has chosen to sacrifice artistic quality for commercial success and has so fallen in love with helping Africa and with being popular among the Washtingon elite, mainstream media, and Hollywood celebrities to get that help that he’s refused to criticize America anymore. The only people he stands up to are anyone America is bullying.

I don’t get any sense that Thom has abandoned his political principles. I’m proud of the stances he has taken. I do wish he’d get back to being even more political and I hope he challenges Stephen Colbert’s Zionism and militarism and agrees with Colbert’s anti-corporation views on Monday. When Thom starts kissing American butt, befriending war criminal US politicians like Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama, and starts name-dropping Hollywood celebrities, I’ll agree he’s a diva like Bono.

However, I think Radiohead’s problem right now is not being able to put out great work — not with being unwilling to do so to make more money. It happens all the time with my favorite TV writers like Chris Carter, Ira Steven Behr, Ronald D. Moore, and Frank Spotnitz. Heck, even Vince Gilligan had a few less than stellar episodes during this season of “Breaking Bad.” It’s not that artists aren’t willing to put out great work; it just becomes a LOT HARDER to be fresh the longer you do it.

I do agree that the short album thing is really annoying because we DO end up paying more for 3 EPs than one long album.

So, here’s to another great, long Radiohead album soon.

And I quite like Thom’s dancing; I loved the way his arms moved to the beats of the drums and percussion at the end of “Staircase.” He didn’t SEEM any less self-absorbed (probably actually nervousness) than he did on Canal + in 2001 or during his last SNL performance, flailing his arms about to the brass section during “The National Anthem”.

Who cares if he wants to enjoy life or dress differently? it’s just appearances. I think Thom, as a person, is probably still fighting for his artistic vision, and that’s the most important thing.

It seems like how to disappear is just mad Thom Yorke wore a blazer for the show

  • Mike

The comments section of this page is just completely ridiculous. Radiohead had a screw up and a good song on SNL. TIME TO FREAK OUT/ARGUE CEASELESSLY WITH ANYONE WHO LIKED IT.

  • http://Musty Name

How to disappear: you need to get some exercise and fresh air mate. It must be truly maddening sitting in front of RH forum for hours on end arguing whether or not these gentleman have lost their touch.
TKOL from a different perspective was pure genius. The groundbreaking and progressive release of In Rainbows would be a difficult act to follow. It seems with the release of the current album they were trying to take another stab at the music “business”. The remixes that followed allowed small groups who have not gotten their breakthrough yet the chance to be promoted through RH. We are reassured the band has not lost their touch with the release of “the daily mail”. They reported a few years ago that this would be the aim, short albums with single track releases.
Thom’s voice was flat during the first set that much is true. His vocals, more often than not, are flat and not fully tuned during their opening song while playing live. They have come a long way since the Glastonbury performance haven’t they? 

    Cheers

  • shut your stinkholes

WTF IS A HIPSTER ZOMBIE FUCKER!?

  • Joe

If you listen carefully, TKOL has music that can turn into annoying noise really easy, even Radiohead still hasn’t quite nailed how to perform it live. Ha, I’d really start to worry if they played Paranoid Android wrong.

I admit this wasn’t Radiohead’s best performance, but it’s still THE BEST BAND EVER ! No one can make music like them.

    Rock on.

  • pretentious electronica fan

I’ve been listening to Ego on repeat for two hours now. I, for one, love the new direction of the music and am glad he is doing these collaborations. Looking forward to the Atoms for Peace album.

  • Xian

It was not their best performance, but it was great, they were just a little nervious, Thom forgot some of the lyrics of “Lotus Flower”, the «be as quiet as mice» part.

  • marcel

what are you people on? This is awesome. Radiohead has always been a band who take a more live approach to their studio material. This is fantastic. Full of energy. I love it.

  • Pop Is Dead Astoria 1994

Well if you want my opinion, they have never topped the Live At London Astoria 1994, thats radiohead at their very finest and if you havent saw it get it!
    get real.

  • 15steppy

firstly whats all this “trying to be like bono” nonsense? get a grip people.

lotus sounded a little bit ropey if i’m honest..nerves mainly from what i can see. staircase was fab. thom’s loving flapping that hair about :) jonny seems to get younger everytime i see him. good stuff…but then i’m one of those that ‘get’ the new radiohead..and love it. keep on moving forward keep on evolving…. keeps them fresh.

  • RHL

Look, if you don’t like what you hear, shut the fuck up and move on. No one cares. I’m a long time Radiohead fan, and personally I like the band even more, especially Thom. Remember how much of a sour fuck he was? I was worried about him, but now he’s just up there having fun. Maybe when you push pass 40 you realize it’s time to lighten the fuck up I do what you like.

Bloom a masterpiece along with many others!
Thom nailed it big time on Colbert nearly brought me to tears….
I feel Phil needs to be the only drummer though use synth as back up…. Bring on the Aussie tour.

  • revolving door

An interesting trail of comments here. I would agree that the SNL performance of Lotus Flower does not gel too well. The playing is not tight and the song just manages to hold together. Other performances of this song, chiefly their recent “Live from the Basement” show is much stronger. So it goes…that performance was a blip (nice to know their human) which then improved with “staircase.”

As far as the singer’s persona and the band’s connection with each other is concerned. It is, despite being an interesting discussion, speculative…unless of one of us lives in Oxford and somehow has insider knowledge of the band that no one else has.

What is certain is that they’ve all known each other as a band for at least 20+ years. To work that closely together-writing, recording, transposing the studio version to a live setting and performing consistently over long tours- means that there is probably very little they don’t know about each other. As a result, its not suprising if they seem a little distant. It could be that the distance helps keep it fresh which by default brings it back together. Perhaps the second drummer, whose really good and shares the space with Phil very well, also helps to keep things interesting. I too am just speculating…but that is certainly from what I’ve come to understand from my own experiences in bands, theatre groups and office teams over long periods of time. Keeping good things fresh for oneself and by default the fans is tough. On that occasion, the SNL show just seemed an off night. The Colbert show however was really inspired and the Roseland ballroom shows seem to indicate that these new songs will hold the test of time over a tour.

    Hope so :)
