Before we start work on the next Radiohead album,
I will foolishly be running in the London Marathon 2002, on Sunday
14th April. I am writing to ask if you would kindly sponsor me
for this event, and help me raise much-needed funds for The Samaritans.
The Samaritans are a UK-based charity who offer twenty-four-hour
availability and support to people who are going through a period
of crisis and who may have suicidal feelings. They are part of
a worldwide organisation called Befrienders International. I'm
hoping to run the Marathon in four hours. In those four hours,
The Samaritans will take around 2,200 calls from people who are
in need of emotional support. The Samaritans will listen to them,
giving them the time and space to say how they are really feeling.
I'm aiming to raise £4,500, but hoping that the total will
be much higher. All sponsors will be entered into a draw to win
the drumkit which I used on various tracks on OK Computer, including
Exit Music and Paranoid Android. The kit is a five-piece cherry-red
Premier XPK, complete with cymbal stands and a bass-drum pedal.
The ride and crash cymbals and hi-hats are made by Zildjian, and
were also used in the OK Computer sessions. To make a donation
please use the link below where you can choose the amount to sponsor
me.

Please be sure to give us your full name to add
to a visitors book. We will then use this to pick the drumkit
winner. Thank you for your time and support. With blisters on
my feet, Philip

Radiohead World Tour Will Happen
>> Thursday 28-03-02
Radiohead will be embarking on a world tour and
plan to showcase and record a new album en route. A source close
to the band revealed to Xfm that they intend to undertake a full
world tour in addition to the eight European dates. The band will
be previewing a large amount of previously unheard songs on an
as-yet-to be announced world tour. Apparently the band will be
using the concerts as an opportunity to try out these songs in
a live environment, and each night of the tour will be recorded
so various aspects of the songs can be used when piecing together
the new album. This is a recording technique they also employed
while composing OK Computer, where the band took their mobile
studio to demo new songs during an American tour. [from xfm]

no news today, so here's noel gallagher
>> Friday 22-03-02
Noel Gallagher feels the internet is taking the magic out of music.
Noel said the mystery that used to surround bands when he was a
kid had been taken away by the wealth of information and insight
offered by the internet. Fast forward to today and theres
a web cam in the Radiohead studio while theyre recording their
album. And they write a diary," Noel pointed out. Theres
too much information going on here
I dont want to know
how you make your records and I dont want you to know how
I make my records. I dont want you to see me in the studio
looking like an arse, having just got out of bed! "The more
information you give people, the more the magic goes out of the
music, Noel continued. Webcams in studios I find appalling.
Ours would be quite interesting as it goes, youd just see
a load of people sitting around drinking. [from mtv,
thanks william]

DJ Shadow on Radiohead
>> Friday 15-03-02
DJ Shadow had some words to say on the prospect of working with
Radiohead in the future. "Of Radiohead, he said: "That
would be amazing if they did ask me to work on something. They routinely
ask me to tour with them, but the timing always seems to be wrong
[DJ Shadow toured with the band in 1997]. Hopefully they haven't
given up on me yet because I'd really like to do something with
them. I'm an unequivocal fan of that group." [from NME,
thanks Denise]

Radiohead help fight Third World poverty
>> Wednesday
13-03-02
Radiohead and Ewan McGregor are taking part in an advert for the
anti-poverty charity War On Want. The advert will be launched today
as part of the charity's Tobin Tax Day. The charity wants a tax
introduced on currency speculation. War On Want claims currency
speculation by Western speculators destabilises the economies of
developing countries. The charity is asking for a tax of a fraction
of one per cent to calm currency markets and raise funds for development.
The advert is expected to be shown in an edited form in cinemas
nationwide, with the original version streamed on the charity's
website, waronwant.org.

catching up: the news
>> Sunday 10-03-02
Radiohead will begin recording the follow-up to 'Amnesiac' next
month. Colin Greenwood revealed that work will begin on new music
in just a matter of weeks. He commented: "We're going to start
work again in April. We're going to give it a bit more of a break
than the last time." Ed O'Brien added: "We don't know
what it will be like yet. You get asked this question before you
make a record and we just don't know. So many times you say it's
going to be the three minute pop song record, and other times you
say it's the prog rock record and it never turns out that way. We'll
just get back into rehearsal and then back into the studio and we'll
see what happens." Greenwood told NME.COM: "We're planning
to play some shows in Europe in the summer and we'll take it from
there." [from NME,
thanks Adam]
In short: You can download the MP3 of Thom and Beck performing
"I'm Set Free" in LA here.
The w.a.s.t.e.
shop has some new merchandise. There is an article on Stanley
Donwood and some artwork in the new Bristol (UK) magazine Decode,
out March 7. Have a look at a clip
of Thom from 1994 when Radiohead won Best Single for Creep at the
NME awards. [thanks to Marla for all these bits]
Back in march 1992, a certain band called On A Friday signed a
record deal with EMI Records, changing their band name into 'Radiohead'.
The rest? Well, the rest is history. Not sure about the exact date,
but anyway: ... Happy 10 Years Anniversary Radiohead!! [thanks to
Marc for the reminder:)]
There's a brief Radiohead mention in an interview with David Holmes,
a Northern Irish DJ.
A lot of people in the industry dont have to balls to
take chances. Radiohead was the prime example of a band who just
did exactly what they wanted. They didnt care about success,
they just took this massive risk and said this is who we
are, this is the music we believe in" [thanks William]
This appeared in an article
in Newsweek about the downfall of the music industry, Moby said
this: "As much as I love Radiohead, I wish they had a couple
of hit singles on their last album so I could hear them on the radio
instead of O-Town." [thanks Scott]
..and Moby mentioned Radiohead's 'Knives Out' as one of his favourite
songs. Here's
more. [thanks ime]
The BBC are using radiohead's "everything its the right place"
as the advertising campaign music in the forth coming series named
"trenches". It is a television drama/history show on the
first world war. It is being screened on BBC 2 this month. [thanks
Ryan]
Radiohead #2 on Spin's Top 40: "Radiohead are, for the moment,
what great rock bands should be- weird, arrogant, earnest, and beautiful."
Thom quote: "We're at a time when we are being presented with
undeniable global changes and we're listening to the most hokey
shit on the radio and watching various bullshit celebrities...which
is fine, you know, but I can't do that." [thanks Chance]
There's an article from the Chicago Tribune about Music downloads
on the internet with Ed interviewed: "I download MP3s myself,"
says Radiohead guitarist Ed O'Brien. "I'd be a hypocrite if
I were against it. It does our music a lot of good, because in many
ways it takes a while for people to get used to our music. People
who are into a band, they'll download the music, but they also want
a copy of the album. I'd be worried if we were a straight-ahead
pop band, where you hear a song 10 times, and you don't really want
to hear it again. But I've got confidence in our music, that there
is enough depth and breadth there to survive Napstering.'"
Read it in full here.
[thanks Carl]
In Q Magazine this month there was a feature on the Pulk/LSP video
plus images from the video, which appears to be mainly computerised.
It says it is 'unlikely to be shown on TV because of it's "difficult"
subject matter, although it may appear in the future as a DVD. It
was directed by Johnny Hardstaff, and took 4 months to complete,
and features conjoined twins inside a giant centrifuge. The film
came about after last year when Radiohead asked Hardstaff to take
any of the songs off Amnesiac to make a film for, and he was touched
by the fragility in Thom's lyrics for the songs. [thanks Sam]
