New album expected in March
>> Wednesday 31-07-02

Radiohead talk about the new album in the latest NME magazine. Colin talks about their plans for the new album "We fly to LA at the end of august. (Longtime producer) Nigel Godrich rents a space there. We're going to spend two weeks working. The plan is like with OK Computer' We'll have loads of songs we know and it'll just be (mimes dumping a pile of books on the table).. there!" He thinks about this: "It means that we'll be in America for September 11. Which will be interesting"

Thom: "Well, the idea is not to use any computers on this record. (Mirthless laugh) Ha!, we'll see how long that lasts." They hope to release the new LP in March 2003.

In the NME Radiohead also talk about the current tour through Portugal and Spain. "Now we get to play nice shows in nice places in Europe. It's the Creative Gentleman's Leisurely Tour", agrees Colin Greenwood. "You know, Panama hat, diary and soak up the culture as you go along". "Why Portugal?", snorts Thom. "Don't ask me, it was Ed's idea".

The plan is to try out 16 new songs they've written, find out which ones they like best, find out which ones the audiences like best and then go and record them. Thom: "If song works really well, we won't play it the next night. If people respond well to it then we've tried it out. We don't want to get bored. That's bad news for the audience, but (filthy laughy) tough shit!"

After the show Radiohead are triumphant. "I love everybody, you know", beams Colin over his Caipirinha. "Thom just said, 'If you fuck off, don't worry. It's not Madison Square Garden. We're here to enjoy ourselves". [Read more in the latest NME, out today in the UK. Thom is on the cover (live shot from first night in Lisbon). There are 3 full pages inside reviewing Lisbon shows and short exclusive interview with Thom. More is promised for next week's issue. And after this, there is 4 pages on why Radiohead is so cool (highlight albums / best shows etc) and also a full color glossy big pull-out poster of Thom on stage in Lisbon] thanks to Warren for sending in the scans.

Radiohead in Porto II
>> Sunday 28-07-02

Tonight was Radiohead's fifth gig in Portugal and the second at the Porto Coliseum. with surprising highlight: Colin, Jonny & Thom playing 'Like Spinning Plates'. Something went wrong wit either Thom or Colin. So, they had to start again. Thom's piano playing on this song wasn't perfect either:) Creep was played as the third encore. The crowd went completely mad and was probably the perfect ending of Radiohead's Portuguese tour.

For a full setlist, check the gigography

Radiohead in Porto
>> Saturday 27-07-02

The fourth gig in Portugal and Radiohead's first in Porto was at a beautiful coliseum. The band played a solid set, again starting with the new songs. As Thom said it: "first we are going to play some new songs, then we are going to play some old songs and then..er.. we don't know yet". For a full setlist, check the gigography

3rd Lisbon Show
>> Thursday 25-07-02

The third Radiohead show in Lisbon, Portugal was a little bit shorter than the previous two, but the band seemed to have played their best Portuguese gig yet.

Myxomatosis featured Thom wearing a little keyboard guitar… and says before song “Don’t I look cool”… someone shouted out ‘Rolf Harris’ and Thom said “I don’t look like Rolf Harris” hehe. We suck young blood was introduced as “this next song is a horror song, we suck young blood!!!” I will was introduced by saying “this is not by the Beatles”.

The crowd did some flamenco hand clapping at the start of Morning bell, Thom was impressed and said “we should have had that when we recorded it. Thom sat down at organ to start Everything in its right place, started singing few lines, by himself before stating EIIRP, the Manics “if you tolerate this, your children will be next”, which was used for sampling in the rest of the song. After everything in it's right place, Thom walked along the front row and shaked each persons hand – really shakin' hands/looking at each person in eye…

The band played another new song: 'where I end and you begin' [Jonny was on a moog, didn’t play guitar, Thom played black electric guitar.. cool new tune, little bit experimental, not very fast] The crowd got wicked before the second encore, singing Ole Ole Ole before they came on stage. The band mimed kicking a football around stage to every member.

Full setlist is available in the gigography. [thanks roars, clare & cathy]

2nd Lisbon Show
>> Wednesday 24-07-02

Radiohead played their second show of the tour last night, again in Lisbon, Portugal. As reported earlier there was no interval in between the two sets, the band went straight into lucky after the new stuff.

The show started off again with There There (Jonny uses 4 sticks when drumming and stops half way through to play the guitar, Ed plays drums all theway through). We suck young blood, Myxomatosis, Sail to the Moon, Scatterbrains & Punch up at a wedding (which sounds a bit like early Beatles) were played again as well.

Another new song played was 'Keep the wolf from the door', which was an interesting song, because Thom was more rapping rather than singing.

‘Sit down, Stand Up’ was on the first night's setlist but wasn’t played that night. Thom played on piano repeating ‘sit down sit down’ then end did a ‘mad idioteque-isk ending going mad shouting ‘The rain drops’ over and over… the crowd went mad (kinda idiotequie beat in background/compressed beats) and went a bit trashy at the end with guitars. This song *really* brought the house down tonight (!!) Thom lost some sample before playing it/was pissed off… but said “ohh well we’ll have to play it anyway” … got biggest cheer of the night. The first encore also featured another new song, 'Go to sleep'.

For a full setlist, check the gigography
[thanks nuno, yaron, paulo, dan, roars, clare & cathy]

No interval in between sets tonight, but more new songs!
>> Tuesday 23-07-02

Jonny was on the official message board today and commented on the quality of the mp3's of last night's gig: "I hear they're a bit rough-sounding. A good thing possibly (smudges the songs which are still a little out of focus)". Jonny also said that the first show was fun. On tonight's show he said: "We're ditching the interval tonight tho' and playing some of the other new ones." Jonny suddenly left and said: "pre-gig satanic ritial awaits. Love to all, Jonny"

First gig of the year in Lisbon
>> Tuesday 23-07-02

Radiohead played their first gig of this year in Lisbon, Portugal last night. The evening, with Four Tet supporting was devided into two sets. The band played new songs in their first set and old songs in their second set. They opened the first half with 'There, there' with Ed and Jonny playing drums and seven other new songs. 'There, there' was the only song that was played once before in a webcast by the band. After 10 minutes the band played old songs only with the encore including, lift. Although Thom said, "we're not allowed to tell you the name of the songs", a full list is available in the gigography. Mp3's of 'Lift', 'There, there', 'Up on the ladder' & 'Scatterbrain' are available in the multimedia section. [thanks mary, david, nemisis, roars, clare & cathy]

Building the 2002 Gigography
>> Tuesday 16-07-02

Yes, it's that time of year again. Radiohead's summer tour is almost there. As you all know Radiohead are only playing Portugal and Spain.

If you're attending one of the gigs i'd really love to hear from you at reviews@ateaseweb.com. You can send your setlists, reviews, news, pictures, audio, video, ticket scans, etc. (if possible: as soon you can after the gig, so visitors of at ease will be the first to know)... For those who are not going.. reviews in (online) papers/magazines are welcome too.

One more thing, if you're willing to send me any of the above, you can send me a quick e-mail (reviews@ateaseweb.com) with the date(s) of the gig(s) and what you are probably gonna supply. This would make it easier for me to get an idea on what to expect from who..

Thanks in advance!

Radiohead: Friends of the Earth
>> Monday 15-07-02

Radiohead are backing a Friends of the Earth campaign to raise environmental awareness in the run-up the forthcoming Earth Summit. Friends of The Earth have set up an audio website at www.radioearthsummit.org, where they are asking people to submit messages prior to next month's Earth Summit in South Africa.

The aim is to raise awareness of the pressing need to act on the issue of the environment.

Radiohead singer Thom Yorke has contributed a message, while the band have donated a rare video for 'Motion Picture Sountrack', as well as an audio stream of the song.

In his message, Yorke said: "The Earth Summit is the only opportunity we have left to address the hijacked free trade agenda of the WTO, to make the environment inextricably linked to poverty and the global divide of 1st and 3rd world, to make corporations accountable for the environmental effects of their business, wherever they choose to hide, and to make wealthy countries take responsibility for the impact their over-consumption has on the rest of the world.

"It is not good enough to preach about the trickle down effect of economic growth if your house is being washed away, your child has skin cancer, you can't get clean water and the weather is changing beyond recognition, forever." [from nme.com, thanks adam]

>> Friday 12-07-02

Radiohead are playing the green stage (the main one) on Saturday August 3rd at 12:50am sandwiched between Paul Weller and Primal scream.. Radiohead will play one hour only. [thanks David]

Here's what Mel from w.a.s.t.e. had to say on the Mp3/EMI Germany lawsuit: "Although Radiohead do not object to MP3's of their live music on the internet, unfortunately they do not own it. All recorded music (whether live or not) is the property of EMI, and EMI's world-wide piracy policy is very different to ours." [thanks Brian]

Radiohead are featured in a new skateboarding video called One Step Beyond. there are snippets of Like Spinning Plates, Pull/Pulk Revolving Doors and a near-full version of The National Anthem. Tony Hawk's mindblowing 24ft. gap is featured with National Anthem - it looks nice. [thanks Ian]

Radiohead's 'Everything in it's right place' featured in a TV Show regarding the Police Service of Northern Ireland in Belfast, it played while the police were cruising the streets [thanks Scott]

Stanley Donwood and 'the making of..'
>> Thursday 11-07-02

Here's a part of the interview Stanley Donwood did with Idea Magazine: My attitude when I work with Radiohead is to try to hear the pictures in the music. That sounds stupid but its the only way I can explain it. The best thing I can think of is how I felt when Kid a was finished. Iit was as is I hadn't done anything at all. My hands were guided by the music. Maybe I didn't think at all. it sounds so crazy but I hope you understand. Listen to music and close your eyes while you have a pen in your hand and a piece of paper on the table. Let your hand be moved by the music. When the song is finished open your eyes and see what you have done.

I like to think that the pictures I draw for each record are a reasonable interpretation of the music I hear. Thom and me work next to each other telling each other what we like and don't like. When we finally agree on a picture thats pretty much how it ends up. We make a lot more pictures than we need then choose the best ones.

You can read more of the interview here [thanks John]

German Radiohead site MPIE has been contacted by the IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) to take action in the name of Radioheads German Record company EMI. to delete all MP3s they had on the web site. Unfortunately they did not receive this letter or e-mail. As a reaction EMI contacted a lawyer who sent MPIE.de a letter, which was actually received and all files and directories were deleted immediately. Still the lawyer now asks for 550,42 Euros (equal amount in US-Dollars) of expenses.

Well, this is just insane. Because 'mpie.de' is just as non-profit as 'at ease'.. solely making web sites for the Radiohead fans, we cannot let this happen. So, I suggest to sign a petition here. Or check out this page to help them in another way.

Golfing with Thom
>> Tuesday 09-07-02

Radiohead's 'No Surprises' are featured in Hispano-French movie "L'Auberge Espagnole" from Cedric Klapisch. The song is also available on the movie's soundtrack. [thanks aurelien]

In an interview at Chart Attack, Beta Band's Steve was asked: What was it like touring with Radiohead? They make themselves out to be such staunch, serious fellows. I'm sure they have their fun. Steve: Yeah. Thom likes to get out on the golf course. That's where he kind of relaxes. We played a few rounds with him. He plays for money, too. [thanks Carlos]

Neil Finn and Friends in concert is airing this month on DirecTV, free to all subscribers. "And Friends" includes Phil on drums and Ed on guitars. [thanks Scott]

Eddie Vedder covers Creep.
>> Monday 08-07-02

Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder recently did a cover version of Radiohead's Creep. It's available at the Pearl Jam site, theskyiscrape.com. Check the MP3 section. The song has different lyrics as well:

i said.. / i'm back in a circle / don't feel like coming out / i don't belong here / i see you're a nothing / i say there's something / you're so special / so fucking special / i'm a creep / i'm a weirdo / oh what are we doing here? / i don't belong here / stay there tonight / i say that i'm soldier / all alone here / and not a sin / oh nothing... / all down here... / you're so special / you're fucking special / i'm a creep / i'm a weirdo / oh what am i doing here? / i don't belong here / oh oh yeahhhh... / to lose.. / run to lose... / run run run...

Reviews and opinions on this version can be read here.

Some more info regarding the I Might Be Wrong 'demo' heard in the Vanilly Sky documentary on the DVD. If you read the DVD credits, you will learn that it was an acoustic version recorded by Nancy Wilson, of the band HEART, who composed much of the instrumental music in the film. Nancy also happens to be married to Vanilla Sky director, Cameron Crowe.[thanks Robert]

Alternate version of I might be wrong?
>> Friday 05-07-02

An alternate version, perhaps a remix, of "I Might Be Wrong" can be heard during the opening minutes of a short documentary entitled "Hitting It Hard" within the "Vanilla Sky" DVD. [thanks Surya]

EST among jazz artists inspired by Radiohead
>> Tuesday 02-07-02

Depending on your perspective, it's either an absurd development or an entirely natural one. Two of the rock world's most respected artists are exerting influence over the jazz world. The music of Radiohead and Bjork, who have been accorded the labels of the world's best rock band and pop music's most creative artist, are being co-opted by some of jazz's finest.

That's the fist paragraph of an article from the Boston Globe. Read the rest here. [thanks todd]

Ed collaborates with Asian Dub Foundation
>> Monday 01-07-02

The Asian Dub Foundation album is nearing completion. The new album, set for release in Spring 2003, features contributions from Ed O'Brien.Chandrasonic of ADF has said: Radiohead, especially Ed, are fans of ADF from when we played with them back in '98 at the Amnesty gig in paris. He's been in contact with us for a while. I've liked them since O.K.Computer and Dr.Das since Kid A. They're VERY innovative and prepared to take musical risks, to explore; plus they have the highly emotive singing of Thom Yorke. It was an honour to have Ed play on the album; we both have a great deal of admiration for each other's guitar styles. We play together on 2 tracks. He's got some WILD sounds I can tell you! [thanks jurgen]

The "Film & Arts" Channel in Chile will be showing "Meeting people is easy" on July 19th at 7 PM [thanks pablo]

Jonny made another appearance on the official message board today. Here's what he had to say to some of the questions/posts:

Parrots nest: "I'm afraid, my old love, that Parrot's nest was an endearingly ramdom rumour started by whoever said it first." [note from ateaseweb.com: it was this site who presented the existence of Parrots / Parrot's Nest. It looks like one of my sources have let me down or the track will be named otherwise. more news when i have it]

LP6: Guitars yes, big wiry synths yes, Philip singing yes lots of drumming yes

Reckoner: Played once, dropped possible the worst show that tour too, I'm afraid. Lovely spot though. I was very ill....

Kid Rock: Yes, he's an old trollop who's no better that he ought to be as am I.
[thanks eini]
