Radiohead: Good Samaritans
[29-11-02]
Radiohead are backing a new Samaritans counselling
service, which lets people email in, totally
anonymously, with their problems. The idea is
to target teenagers, especially young men, who
have trouble talking through their feelings
on the phone. The band's drummer, Phil Selway,
has been a volunteer for years. He says we all
may need the Samaritans at some point in our
life, particularly with recent figures out:
"There are some alarming statistics. I
think it's the World Health Organisation that
say by 2020 they think the biggest killer will
be depression. So you have those very stark
figures and then you suddenly think..."
"Something like the Samaritans which is
talking about getting feelings out into the
open and actually looking for emotional support
- well, suddenly it has a very important role
in community and our society."The band
have also donated a live track and video to
the Samaritans website. [from bbc,

Mark Owen [29-11-02]
In tonight's episode of (UK) Celebrity Big Brother,
comedienne Sue Perkins asked Mark Owen (of Take
That fame) to "sing us something lovely".
Mark obliged by picking up the guitar and knocking
out the closing bars of Street Spirit, complete
with "fade out again" vocals. At last
- Take That sing a decent song! [thanks Bruce]

happen again. Thanks to all of you for the kind
e-mails. I'm ok.. will reply to all those e-mails

Beck
& Flaming Lips cover Radiohead
[November 2002]
At the Beck and Flaming Lips concert on nov.
14 in fort worth they did a cover of "Creep".
After playing "Loser" Beck talked
about how some artists don't like to play their
first big hit because they feel they're past
it. "but i still feel like it's still a
part of you" he said or something like
that. Then wayne told beck how he recently saw
radiohead and they refused to played creep and
they talked about radiohead for a little bit.
Beck stopped in the middle of "already
dead" and started playing creep, the lips
joined in and they played a wonderful rendition
to the delite of everyone there. After that
wayne told beck that radiohead doesn't have
to play creep anymore cos beck can do it for
them. The Flaming Lips have covered 'Knives
Out' on their recent live shows (A very
different version with no guitar. They also
changed the rythmn of the song, which was driven
by more of a
"trip-hop" drum beat and chords being
played on the keyboard. As well as Moby who
plays Creep pretty often lately [thanks chris,
greg, allison, jeff, roy, marc]
Tom Petty and Radiohead [November
2002]
Tom Petty, who has two grown daughters and a
nine-year-old stepson, tells LAUNCH that they
bond over music. "What's interesting about
my girls right now is they seem to be going
back and finding the older stuff. I have one
that's just discovered Muddy Waters and thinks
he's great, and they have very eclectic tastes.
They're all over the map but, sure, they play
me stuff. They turned me on to Radiohead several
years ago." [thanks Gary]
Badly Drawn Boy [November 2002]
Radiohead were mentioned in this article.. (yeah,
news is slow lately): An assignment earlier
this year helped to focus Damon Gough's vision
for Have You Fed the Fish? In April, Badly Drawn
Boy's soundtrack to the film About A Boy was
released. "It's an unusual circumstance
to me, and to anybody really - to be releasing
two completely different projects in the same
year. Radiohead did something like that with
Amnesiac and Kid A, but that was kind of like
the same
project split into two halves. This is totally
two different things, different mindsets."

story, thanks JSN]
The Next Radiohead
[November 2002]
Here's another article about who the "next
Radiohead" is; this time it's Scottish
band Idlewild. The writer doesn't seem to have
a very good grasp of what Radiohead is all about,
but makes a couple of interesting arguments.
For instance: "Five years after OK Computer
was released, Radiohead is now the band that
killed British rock." Check it out [thanks
J. Kelly]

Radiohead Mix CD
[November
2002]
At the moment there's a a Radiohead Mix CD floating
around that sounds like it was done using all
vinyl and plays more like a hip hop "pause
tape" than a club dj mix. The scratching
and mix's are excellent as the
artist crossfades between live versions of songs
into regular (johnnys signiture creep part is
replaced by record scratching over the acoustic
version of 'creep'), uses a lot of effects (chaos
pad-esque), uses b sides, and even fakes people
out with an old 60's psych band J.K. & Co.'s
'Fly' since it sounds so much like Thom. Early
electronic genius Raymond Scott is also scattered
throughout it. The CD has the Minotaur logo
on the cover and only leaves an inconspicuous
email address, hoarserotorvator@yahoo.com, that
i imagine would do mail orders.
Happy
Birthday Jonny [Tuesday 05-11-02]
Today is Jonny Greenwood's 31st birthday. Have
a good one..
