MAXIM
(US) REVIEW 'HAIL TO THE THIEF' [23-05-03]
Have
you been waiting for Radiohead to quit being so goddamn weird
and rock out with the unbridled fury of their younger years?
Well...you'd better grab a Snickers and get comfy. Hail to the
Thief isn't the return to gritty guitar-rock basics you hoped
for, but it's pretyy great nonetheless, as the brooding Brits
work their experimentation al jones into songs that brood, stomp,
and soar--often all at the same time. The occasional guitar
does popup, crashing into a symphony of fierce riffs and slamming
drumbeats on "2+2=5", dancing aroung a quiet piano
refrain on "Sail to the Moon", and strumming through
the spacey, buzzing rocker "Go to Sleep." The effect
is a large wash of sound that includes skittering electronic
beats, a smattering of etherereal keyboards, and, of course,
Thom Yorke's ghostly, tortured wails. The sense of oppressive
dread that made 1997's OK Computer so throttling also returns
here in spades. As Yorke and mates fret about the current state
of the world, their gloom is clearly our boon.--David Peisner.
4 out of 5. [thanks evan]

This is Radiohead Television's website. Shortly we will commence

not happen. Maybe everything will be okay. Let's hope so, anyway".

THOM:
"NOEL GALLAGHER NEEDS TO READ SOME BOOKS"
[23-05-03]
Here's are some bits and pieces from the Telegraph interview
(May 17th) [thanks Matthew]
- There There video was shot in the 50 Acre Wood outside Bristol,
and was directed by Chris Hopewell. 4 days filming, and 2 weeks
to do the animation. The brief was: "a bit Brothers Grimm,
a bit Jan Svankmajer [Czech animation legend]". Thom: "It's
bagpuss"
- Colin, on the concept of the new artwork: "It's comprised
of the five colours used on American road signs, and black and
white". "The record is all fluorescent, opaque sounds,
like road signs-clear, coming at you out of the darkness."
-Thom's favourite film: Being There with Peter Sellers.
- Noel Gallagher said that "protest is a wast a time",
Thom answers (after a pause and a smile) "He needs to read
some books."
-Thom: the gloaming is "The imminent sense of moving into
the dark ages again. The rise of all this Right-wing bigotry,
stupidity, fear and ignorance."

REVIEW: CHRIS O'RILEY COVERS RADIOHEAD AND IT ROCKS!
[22-05-03]

Rolling Stone have reviewed Christopher O'Riley's tribute album
'True Love Waits' and gave it four stars: "In 1997, concert
pianist Christopher O'Riley discovered Radiohead's OK Computer.
He became a hard core fan and ended up making his own transcriptions
of the band's music, eventually premiering them during breaks
of From the Top, an NPR show he hosts. Radiohead fans recognized
O'Riley's moody and structured involvement with the music, and
in no time his recordings appeared on fan Web sites. For Truc
Love Waits, O'Riley plays fifteen of these transcriptions, from
"Karma Police" to "Fake Plastic Trees".
He is melodically vivid yet also noisily orchestral, in both
his writing and playing, revoicing Radiohead distortions, threats,
loveliness and dismay. With unblinking virtuosity, he captures
the band's signature contradiction: encountering something exhillarating,
a building, an airport lounge interior, love and feeling simultaneously
somehow unwell.

SECOND
NIGHT IN DUBLIN [19-05-03]
Radiohead's
second gig in Dublin was even better than the first. Tonight
the sound quality was much better. The band also played a different
set, but still left out new album tracks 'I Will' and 'Wolf
from the door'. Like the evening before Radiohead started with
'There There' and '2+2=5', with Thom taking pictures of the
crowd. 'Morning Bell' (Flamenco handclapping by audience) and
'Scatterbrain followed up and weren't played last night. Another
change was introduced by Thom as 'This is the one with the really
difficult keyboard part', which was 'Kid A'. Rarely played live
and indeed a very easy instrumental part for Thom.'
Other new songs compared to the night before were: Climbing
up the walls, No Surprises (Thom with a funny voice: 'The guitar
ain't working. it ain't working. is your guitar working?), Talk
Show Host, We suck young blood (Thom taking photos again), Street
Spirit and a stunning Fake Plastic Trees. Paranoid Android was
announced as a dirty song (Dirty! Dirty!).
Last night's gig was again sold out and the venue was packed,
including U2's Bono and The Edge. Some hours after the gig,
Thom took some time for fans waiting outside the venue. The
band will play in Belfast tonight. Setlist is available in the
gigography.
RADIOHEAD
KICK OFF TOUR WITH AMAZING SHOW IN DUBLIN [18-05-03]
Radiohead
played their first gig of the is year in a packed Olympia Theatre
in Dublin, Ireland. The band debuted two new songs, new album
tracks 'Backdrifts' and 'The Gloaming. All members seemed in
very good spirits, although the sound quality wasn't that good..
The set and the perfomance however was amazing. Radiohead played
their first gig since their Portugese and Spanish shows last
summer.
Radiohead kicked off with 'There There' at about 9pm (Four Tet
was supporting). '2+2=5' and 'Where I End And You Begin' followed.
Then Thom said: 'Thank you very much for having us. This is
Airbag'. After Airbag and Lucky, new track 'Go To Sleep' was
next. Apparantly, Thom's guitar 'ain't working', so Thom asked
for it's brother. The song featured Jonny with an excellent
performance which even got the other band members amazed.
Thom broke a string in Just, which was the oldest song played
last night. A phone rang during You and Whose Army. Thom quickly
added the word ´Telephone´to the song. The National
Anthem was followed by Hunting Bears. During set closer ´Everything
in it´s right place´, Thom sat on stage for a while,
watching the audience. The encore started with The Gloaming,
which was amazing live. When Thom asked if the Irish drink a
lot of beer at weddings, the audience replied with a loud and
definitive YEAH!!!
Thom was in a vey good mood and so he joked around during Paranoid
Android. The band came back for a second encore including ´Karma
Police´and ´How To Disappear´. The last song
got a loud cheer when ´I float down the Liffey´passed.
This was the last song as well, unfortunately. Overall, another
classic Radiohead performance in a beautiful, but just a bit
too crowded, Olympia Theatre. For a full setlist, check the
gigography.

-2+2=5 was the first song done, in a hurry because Nigel "wouldn't
let us eat anything until we'd done it"
-Sit Down Stand Up was written 5 years ago, post OKC, "watching
the delights of Rwanda" on TV...
- I will as well is from 5 years ago, so no use reading too
much in the lyrics. "*laughing* Spot the new father!"
-Thom: "I think we're loosening up. At last. Taken an Ex-Lax."
-Where I end and you begin: Jonny "It's another love song,
isn't it? You old soppy." Thom: "Let me think about
that for a moment. Yes, I guess so."
-There There: "We did a bad version of it on a webcast
once..."
-Scatterbrain is (partly) about seeing old newspapers blowing
in the wind.

NIGEL
NOT PRODUCING STROKES ALBUM [05-05-03]
Radiohead
producer Nigel
Godrich will not be working on the new Strokes album. The
band decided this after after a trial period of sessions intended
for the group's second RCA album. The band will return to the
studio at the end of the month with producer Gordon Raphael,
who was behind the boards for its 2001 debut, "Is This
It," according to manager Ryan Gentles. "All parties
involved had a lovely experience and Nigel and the band really
did get on famously," Gentles adds. "It just wasn't
meant to be in the studio, I suppose." [from billboard]
