THOM'S PERFORMANCE AT JONATHAN ROSS' RADIO 2 SHOW [31-05-03]

Thom perfomed 'Sail to the Moon' on Radio 2's Jonathan Ross show. Jonathan introduced Thom with "I now welcome you one of the most famous miserablist of modern rock music, who has recently decided to cheer himself up somewhat". FIELD DAY FESTIVAL, PT 359 [30-05-03]

in an attempt to rescue the concert, Riverhead town officials said they were talking to State Police about importing troopers from upstate to help control crowds at the June 7 and 8 event, which would feature big-name bands such as the Beastie Boys and Radiohead and was expected to draw at least 50,000 fans.

But while members of the Central Pine Barrens Commission asked the town and the concert promoters to provide more information at a meeting set for Thursday, the board declined to take a position on whether the concert should take place at all on the site of the 2,900-acre former Grumman property.

The decision is significant because it means the commission could force the promoters to make changes to their plan to lessen the impact on the environment, but it stopped short of banning the concert altogether. [full story, thanks Dezien]

RADIOHEAD'S FRIDAY NIGHT W/ JONATHAN ROSS [30-05-03]

Radiohead's performance on the Jonathan Ross show (recorded on Wednesday) will be aired tonight. The band played There There first, then Thom and Jonny had chat with Jonathan Ross (being a big, big fan). The band have also played Fake Plastic Trees.

The band were in the green room studio where they watched the rest of the show with big grins on their faces.

A load of A4 size cards went up all over Islington, North London yesterday promoting HTTT. They look like those ads for people to lose weight/quit smoking/work from home etc and are similar to the bills that appeared in LA a few weeks back.

The text reads:

In California, USA there were even airplanes spotted trailing an advert for "Hail To The Thief" behind it!

Hail to the Thief is Radiohead's last album on their Parlophone/EMI contract. Thom nods. And he jumps up again. 'Oh, but we're very happy with EMI. Don't get me wrong. We really like to stay, but actually...you shouldn't ask me about Radiohead's future. I just don't know. None of us know. We'll have to finish the promotional shit for the album release first. And the tour. After that we will be completely numb and undoubtedly we won't be able to think about the future then either [laughs].

Thom is convinced that Hail to the Thief is a definitive close of another Radiohead chapter, because he feels he's on the edge of self parody. 'And I've seen too many bands that went over the edge. Since then I'm determined to watch it carefully. We're a pop band again for now, because it was necessary. Just doing what we're good at. But, no matter how good I feel about the new album and how much fun we're having in what we do right now, we've been there already. We're not moving. This is OK Computer 2. What we will do from now on, should not be anything like we've done before. So no, we will not go further back, like everyone expects. There won't be a second 'The Bends'. There is not a single good reason for it. And this is not a rigorous personal decision i'm making towards you here and now. As a band, we have fully discussed this matter recently. (...) Radiohead will be completely unrecognizable in two years. At least, I hope so. It's the only perspective of the future that I can live with.

THOM: 'EVERYTHING IN ITS RIGHT PLACE' SHOULD'VE BEEN A SINGLE [29-05-03]

Thom talked to John Wilson on BBC Radio 4's "Front Row". Thom was asked he was surprised that 'difficult' pop music can still be commercial. Thom: "I think all good pop music is difficult. The mistake we made on 'Kid A' was not releasing any singles. Because I think 'Everything in its right place' for example was in retrospect written to be heard on the radio. I always will consider everything that we do to be pop music.

FIELD DAY FESTIVAL CHANCES STILL SLIM [29-05-03]

"I'm deeply saddened that the county did not choose to be part of this event," said Riverhead Town Supervisor Robert Kozakiewicz, speaking at a news conference yesterday on the site that would host the concert, featuring big-name acts including Radiohead and the Beastie Boys. "This will be a very positive event for the town of Riverhead. I welcome the county to reconsider its decision."

But the county said yesterday that the chances the concert might still happen are slim, and representatives for several local law enforcement agencies said they would not be able to help.

Riverhead Chief of Police David Hegermiller has said his small force of 74 officers can't handle the traffic jams and emergencies that might arise. He said yesterday he would need close to 200 additional officers.

Even if Promotor Dreskin convinced the county to change its mind, he faces other hurdles. On Tuesday, several environmental groups sued Dreskin and Riverhead Town in an attempt to stop the concert, arguing the town didn't do an adequate environmental review before agreeing to lease the site. The parties are due to meet in court on Friday.

Meanwhile, ticketholders checked Internet message boards and news sites, eager to find out whether the concert would still happen.

Alanna Nolan, 15, from upstate Waterville, already spoke of the concert in the past tense yesterday. The ninth-grader spent weeks baby-sitting and doing other odd jobs to save the $85 for a ticket to see Radiohead. Field Day, she said, would have been her first real rock concert. "I've never been to anything big," she said. "This was really exciting, because I was going to see my favorite band." [full story, thanks mfkennedy]

FIELD DAY PRESS RELEASE [29-05-03]

Today (Wednesday) Town Supervisor Robert Kozakiewicz, Chief David Hegermiller of the Riverhead Police Department and Executive Producer of Field Day Andrew Dreskin held a press conference at the festival site at which time they
announced that the planning of the Field Day festival is moving forward and that the denial of a mass gathering permit from Suffolk County was premature.

The promoters and town are continuing to explore all options in an effort to stage the Field Day Festival. The town of Riverhead and the Chief of Police have repeatedly signaled their satisfaction with the Field Day communications, safety, security and traffic plans provided that the town of Riverhead can secure additional police from either the county, state or other local authorities. All parties believe there is sufficient time in which to get that done.

GO TO SLEEP CONFIRMED AS NEXT SINGLE [28-05-03]

Colin, Ed & Phil were guests on XFM's Zoe Ball show today, where the band confirmed that 'Go To Sleep' will be the next single'.

Ed: "The setlists are decided over lunch at that day. Basically what you feel like doing that evening. It keeps everyone on their toes."

Ed: "Kid A is probably the most pure record we've made." (..) Phil said that the band felt more confident than before when recording Hail To The Thief at the Ocean Way Studios in San Francisco.

XFM played There There B-sides 'Paperbag Writer' and 'Where Bluebirds Fly'. Colin: "Thom did Paperbag writer in LA. We did some drums on it in London".

If you heard a newsreader messing up. No worries, it was Phil reading the news. He won't do it again (hopefully).

The band were asked if they are planning any remixes. Colin: "We're sending out some of the song out to some friends. Christian Vogel and Kieren from Four Tet, who is doing a remix for Scatterbrain".

Bands that you respect: Colin: "Booker T and the MG's, Four Tet" Phil: "Four Tet. Bands that play with us, really. You have to admire them for that."

What's the worst question you get asked. Ed: "On this record, regarding the album title 'So, are you really Anti-American?".

FIELD DAY FESTIVAL PERMIT UPDATE [28-05-03]

In a blow to Radiohead fans, Suffolk County has denied a mass gathering permit for a two-day rock concert in Calverton, meaning for now the event can't go ahead.

But the promoter contends the permit was wrongly denied and insists the Field Day Festival will go on June 7-8, as planned. A meeting between Riverhead Town Supervisor Robert Kozakiewicz, Police Chief David Hegermiller and a concert promoter is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. this afternoon at the concert site.

Meanwhile, an environmental group sued Riverhead Town and the event organizers yesterday, charging the town didn't do a proper environmental review before leasing the site to the concert promoters in February.

But Andrew Dreskin, the concert promoter, said he filed his application for a mass gathering permit in March, giving the county enough time to plan the concert. The permit's denial, he said, "has absolutely nothing to do with police and has everything to do with a political desire for this event not to take place."

He said the county can't issue a final permit until 48 hours before the show is set to begin. "And you know what? I have seven lawyers saying the same thing," Dreskin said.

Riverhead Town Attorney Dawn Thomas said suing the town was inappropriate because the town board has not yet decided whether to issue its permit allowing the concert to go ahead. The board plans to vote on the permit June 3. Dreskin argued that he already had committed $5 million to the event and asked that any injunction be accompanied by a bond to cover money he might lose.

Ticketholders expressed anger yesterday that the concert might not go ahead. Jon Desenberg, a 29-year-old management consultant from Washington, D.C., is driving to the concert with about eight other friends. With so many big-name bands on the lineup, also Beck and Liz Phair, "it just didn't seem like the kind of thing that would fall through," he said.

But Dreskin contends Desenberg has nothing to fear, saying he will only refund tickets "on June 9, if the event didn't happen ... Until then, this event is absolutely happening." [full story at newsday.com, thanks mfkennedy]

RADIOHEAD CALLING [28-05-03]

Radiohead has plans to boost music sales by reaching out to fans through mobile phones. With sales of CDs on a three-year slide, the music industry sees mobile phones as powerful outlets for promoting artists and a new way of distributing music for profit — something it failed to do in the early days of Internet music-swapping.
Next month, members of Radiohead plan to reach out to fans directly over mobile phone networks on the same day they release their new record, said Vijay Chattha, spokesman for San Francisco-based IPSH!net, which developed the promotion campaigns. Ultimately, the industry hopes to drive CD sales and, eventually, direct sales of songs over mobile phones. [full story at bizreport.com]

RADIOHEAD ON JO WHILEY SHOW [28-05-03]

Radiohead were on the Jo Whiley show today. Jo asked Thom to describe the new album and Thom didn't get any further then a "Sparkly and shiney and not in any way political album". The band are looking forward to play Glastonbury this year. They are still impressed with their 1997 performance, which was a highlight in their carreer. Thom: "It was like Apocalypse Now for us"

Finishing a record is always a nightmare. Making a record like Kid A was a nightmare as well. The album you're most proud of: Thom: 'Kid A'.

Why did you start making videos again? Colin: 'We didn't stop making videos. They just didn't get shown'. Is there much bitterness in this band? You seem bitter. Colin: "No, its humour"

Thom played an acoustic version of No Surprises "for Mr. Rumsfeld who annouced today that they didn't have any weapons after all. Sorry!"

Music Canada and as a result will be wearing golf attire featuring five of his favourite artists: Radiohead, Massive Attack, Ben Harper, Blur and The Dandy Warhols.To help launch the deal, Matthew was at the Lionhead Golf and Country Club in Toronto yesterday morning to give a golf clinic."I'm really excited with this partnership," Matthew said. "Music has long been a key element in my mental preparation before and during golf events. During my spare time, I'm further influenced by music, in recording my own songs and playing the guitar." In a statement, Field Day executive producer Andrew Dreskin says the "notice of denial was premature," adding that organizers "are continuing to work closely" with local police to try to resolve the issue. The statement reads: "We are moving ahead with efforts to keep the Field Day Music Festival on track. Obviously we are disappointed by this decision, but it appears to be based more on procedural issues than substantive problems. "We believe we can resolve this issue quickly so that we can stage a festival that benefits the town, the county and a world wide audience that seeks to come to Calverton."

RADIOHEAD @ JOOLS HOLLAND [28-05-03]

Radiohead recorded for their performance on Later with Jools Holland at the BBC TV centre. The setlist was like this:

1. There There (to open the show)
2. Go to sleep
3. 2+2=5
4. Where I end and you begin (to close the show)
(5. There There - repeated because 1st recording messed up)

It was an excellent performance in front of the tv cameras and the band seemed very laid back and
comfortable with the music after having the UK tour to "warm up". Particular highlights were Jonny's amazing guitar solo at the end of Go To Sleep and Ed going mental and breaking his drumsticks in There There (take 2).
All of the band sat and listened to the other acts playing - they seemed to really enjoy the Cuban band playing (part of the Buena Vista Social Club?).
Afterwards Thom hung around and gave out some autographs and Ed gave away his (broken) drumsticks and his guitar plecs to the crowd. All in all a great night and it'll be interesting to see it again when it airs on Friday 6th June on BBC2. [thanks Ben]

NEWSDAY.COM: 'FIELD DAY FESTIVAL CANCELLED' [27-05-03]

As reported ealier on ateaseweb.com the Field Day Festival was still waiting for its permit. But, according to Newsday.com Suffolk County has denied a mass gathering permit for a two-day rock concert, with Radiohead headling on June 7th in Calverton, meaning for now the event can't go ahead.

County health officials denied the permit today after Riverhead Police Chief David Hegermiller said his force wouldn't be able to handle the expected crowd of 50,000. On Friday, county officials informed the town they wouldn't be able to help with extra police officers because doing so would require an agreement between the Riverhead town board and the Suffolk county legislature. This wouldn't have been possible, since the legislature doesn't meet until after the June 7 and 8 concert.

The Field Day Festival was to have been a showcase for the 2,900-acre former Grumman site, which the town has been hoping to sell in an effort to spur economic development. Town officials and the concert promoters weren't immediately available for comment.

In addition, the Long Island Pine Barrens Society, an environmental group, sued Riverhead town today, charging the town didn't do a proper environmental review before agreeing to host the concert. Environmentalists had worried that the concert coincides with the nesting season for the rare grasshopper sparrow, which lays its eggs in the fields where the concert was to have taken place. In the premiere issue of Sports Xtra (May 2003), Steve Nash had the following comments regarding Radiohead.

"I think they're brilliant," Nash, point guard for the Dallas Mavericks says, during a tumultuous February for both his team and Planet Earth. "I know it's been well-documented, but for them to change their formula, try new things - and I think make beautiful music - is incredible."

Nash hesitates, a little stutter-step in his pop-literate dribble, then concludes: "To just continue to make the same chord progressions and capitalize on their talent and take the easy road, I think, would have madea lot of people happy - but it wouldn't have made them happy."
