airbag (stopped), the tourist [thanks Adam Frucci]Before starting one song (don't remember which), one of the guitarists played a chord or two of The Pixies song "UMass", which amused Thom enough to sing "It's educational!...." before abandoning what would have been an
awesome cover song. So they were definitely aware of which US state theywere performing in... [thanks John & Ruiner]

Ok, this was the best show i've been to. It started out ok, beta band
played some nice songs, though that isn't really quite the music i'm
accustomed to. They played a 5 or 6 song set and then kid koala came on and
spun for a while. He worked 2 radiohead cuts into there (pull/pulk
revolving doors and fitter, happier if you care) and some jazz and old rock
in as well. He also dj'd for about half an hour. After a short delay,
radiohead came on to the triumphant strains of national anthem. aside from
the smoking (both marijuana and otherwise) all around, nothing detracted
from the show. Thom was somewhat talkative, dedicating pearly (i think) to
the hard rock cafe (after relating an anecdote about playing at one in
mexico where the fans waiting in a queue couldn't get in while the rich
snobs just waltzed in and how he thought seeing kurt cobain's guitar and
cardigan in a glass case was 'the most fucking depressing thing' he'd ever
seen), karma police to 'anyone who hates their job', and the bends (i think)
to anyone having a house party after the show. they also played a few quite
unexpected songs, among them just, karma police, and pearly. personally, i
thought the best moments were talk show host, idiotique, i might be wrong,
you and whose army (thom kept on peering into the camera as he was playing
on the piano), and like spinning plates. like spinning plates was played
amazingly, as the piano was used without any of the distorting effects, and
the melody was amazing. he also seemed to forget the words, muttering
'shit' under his breath into the mike and repeating the first few chords of
the song, before remembering. they played 2 encores, playing talk show
host, the bends, and like spinning plates in the first one, and karma police
and the tourist in the second one. though it was chaotic getting out of the
track (where the concert was held) and getting home on the metro, it didn't
detract from the overall experience. if you've already seen them live, i'm
sure you know what the atmosphere was like, and if you haven't, go when you
get the chance. you won't regret it.

amazing show. if you got there early enough and you sprinted, you had a good shot of being up against the barrier. beyond the set-list: there was a false start before "airbag" (which was an interesting surprise to hear as the second song). "pearly," which thom suggested the audience may not be quite familiar with, was dedicated to the hard rock cafe. thom told the story of when they once played there: all the fans could not get in, as all the swanky rich folk took hold of the opportunity. he also explained the feeling of disgust he felt when he saw kurt cobain's cardigan in a glass case, guessing that someone had probably sneaked into kurt's house right after he had died and sold it to the hard rock for a fortune. he introduced "pyramid song" as a song about ghosts and weird creatures. prior to "paranoid android" he asked what everyone was doing afterwards. someone up front told him a house party. so he dedicated "paranoid" to that. right before "everything in its right place" started up, thom played a few seconds of a manic street preacher's song. during the start-up of "like spinning plates", thom seemed to be forgetting the lyrics, cos you could hear him mumble 'shit' under his breath. then he just completely stopped for a second, said 'oh well' and went right into the lyrics. a few words into the song, his voice cracked a bit. to introduce "talk show host", he said, 'this one goes like this.' after "karma police", thom pointed over to johnny, who had been playing the piano, and dubbed him 'johnny fingers.'
there really was not one thing about this night that wasn't special. "pearly," "just," "dollars and cents," and "idioteque" (with all the bouncing and jumping around), all stood out as highlights. but the entire show was phenomenal. the band was in great spirits and thom played with the crowd on a number of occasions - lifting his shirt, making devil horns, smirking, funny faces, making eye contact, encouraging us to get into it. smiles all around when they exited for the final time. truly a most memorable evening.

Well, the Radiohead show last night in Boston was pretty great...though frankly I must say it was less great than the one I went to earlier up in Toronto. There was an intensity in Toronto that was a bit lacking in Boston. The laidbackedness in Boston did help some of the songs... "Airbag" was a highlight. So was "Dollars and Cents" (as always) -- the end of it when Ed just jams went on for quite awhile. Sadly for me, all the "variable" songs were the same at both shows: "Pearly*," "The Tourist." And where was "How To Disappear" in Boston? And I must've missed an announcement, because the tickets said 6:30pm, but we got there at 6 and The Beta Band was half done. Radiohead went on at 7:45, done by 9:45, and I was home by 11:30. What's up with that? In Toronto, they started at 9 and played until 11:30. Anyway, a lesser Radiohead show is still very very very awesome.

This is the second show I've seen Radiohead play. I haven't heard anyone else's feedback for this tour, just stories of the fabled perfect setlist in Oxford and sellouts at Madison Square Garden... but the Amnesiac tour has had a totally different feel than the OK Computer tour-- What I mean is the spite is gone. In mid-1997, I saw them play the electric factory in Philly, disdainfully playing Creep after the lame crowd grew impatient with the actual incredible songs like Airbag and started chanting for the pop-- Thom decided 15 seconds into the song that he wouldn't sing, and let the crowd do it--only to strain and mock himself from 5 years previous in the song's chorus. This show in Boston he did for the crowd. He joked, he talked, he made fun of Jonny's hair. The stage had the look of the bridge of an alien ship from the original Star Trek, just a lot more colorful--mirrored sheets hung from the top of the backstage-- with patterned halogen light bars, horizontal and vertical, thatched onto the backdrop. After about 30 minutes of old 40's love songs when Kid Koala finished mixing, the five walked onstage, all smiles greeting the crowd. Colin looked at Phil and nodded, and tore into the heavy riff of National Anthem. The first 4000 in the crowd had been admitted into a small pen that ran right up against the stage, and with the first bass notes, everyone went wild and stampeded to the front rail, pressing 4000 into about 40 feet of space. The lighting was incredible, the atmospherics were incredible, the crisp clean sound was incredible---all there was to notice was Thom, shaking and pulsing and spitting out falsettos to layered distortion and a powerful driving drum beat. This is the first time i've seen a crowd in America bounce, rather than do it's regular grungy drone "sway". National Anthem, Airbag--"1..2..3..(song starts, stops...) Um, that starts in a FOUR count (Ed laughs)", Morning Bell--which was sung in an orange cloud of fog onstage for a spectacular effect, Ed's vocals were louder than i'm used to, I think it made the performance even better. Lucky, Knives Out, Packt Like Sardines--which Thom referred to as just "Packed" before hand, and was played sans-electronica--instead had Colin pounding the bass line with hard distortion and Thom manning the tambourine. No Surprises, Dollars+Cents, Street Spirit, Pearly--a song which followed a long rap from Thom about his disgust with the Mexico Hard Rock Cafe, for displaying Kurt Cobain's cardigan and guitar from unplugged three months after his death... "The fecking bastards probably went into his house and ripped it off his dead body". Just--which I enjoyed way too much and dislocated a shoulder breifly in the chaos (well worth it), I might be wrong, Pyramid Song, Paranoid Android--"this is a song about ghosts and things like that... well actually, all these songs are i guess", Idioteque-- in-fucking-credible is the only thing i can find to say, Everything in its Right Place--ended the set, Thom played the synth while Jonny manned his toys, at the end of the song the band waved and walked off, leaving only Jonny front center onstage with his little remote-control looking box--and for about 5 minutes to the roar of the crowd he fiddled and mixed Thom's voice from earlier in the song, eventually walking off box-in-hand keeping the noise up for another two minutes or so. First Encore-- "We've actually just started doing this song, it's called Like Spinning Plates." Thom played a rolling tune on the clean piano, looking at Colin trying to get him to find where he was, Jonny played the synth stage right--the piano abruptly stopped. "Fuck. Alright. (Colin containing his laughter)." Talk Show Host, You+Whose Army, The Bends-- i song i was never as fond of until this night, refreshing and spectacular near the end of a set filled with the distance and dissonance of Amnesiac and Kid A. Second Encore- "This is a song for any of you who are in a job you can't stand." I was praying and yelling for How to Disappear, but Karma Police was the next best I could have asked for. "I want to thank the Beta Band, Kid Koala..." Finally, the Tourist--which i thought was perfect. The ended the show how they ended their Darkside-esque Album four years ago. Needless to say, I was in a constant state of pinching myself the whole night... I tackled some people to dive on a setlist that was thrown down into the crowd, and made a run over the rails with a crazy dream of finding the band to sign it. I got about 20 feet, then was grabbed and thrown against a wall, roughed up a bit and quickly escorted out of Suffolk Downs race track. I was close, but next time I'll get it. "If you were a dog they would have drowned you at birth" "I'll be waiting with a gun and a pack of sandwiches" "This is really happening"

Well, I got to Suffolk Downs at about quarter to 5, and they were already letting people in. As I got closser to the stage I realized there was an inner barrier that held about 1000 people or more. When I got in there it was about half full, so I was in the center of this inner circle. The beta band played well I thought, I really enjoyed the double drum set things they did. Kid koala was good, as dj's go. When radiohead came on all of a sudden everyone packt together, so I moved up about 10 more feet. So at this point I'm about 30 feet away, but there are all this abby-normally sized people in front. Highlights were definitly talk show host, idioteque and like spinning plates. The rest of the show kind of felt like I was just listening to radiohead really loudly. The screens helped out a ton, and at one point Thom wiped his forehead on the mic, which looked really funny. I saw a lot of people who had the same hair cut and beard growth as thom, I thought that was funny too. All in all a good show, when I could see the stage that is. P.S. I left Maine at 7:00AM and got at Suffolks downs at 9:00 only to find about 10 people standing at the gate. I waited about 7-8 nervous hours to my first radiohead concert ever. At the 5th or 6th hour the tour bus arrived and went behind the stage. One by one the 5 lads came out. A while after they arrived the sound check started. I do not remember all the songs but they played Fog for a few seconds and Just. Thom used funny lyrics and such to fill up the time. Then Like Spinning Plates started. Every hair on my body stood up, it was so haunting. They played LSP for probably 30-40 mins. While waiting the Beta Band drove around in a golf cart with a horse on the back! It tipped over when they were doing doughnuts and I think one of the guys was hurt but they still played. They left and I waited, and finally after that terrible wait they opened the barricade at 4:40. I was off! I got checked and ran to get my ticket valid and ran like all hell! I was the first one into the pit and chose prime placement right in front of the middle microphone. I was sooooooooo psyched! The crowed filled in and we waited for prob and hour or an hour and a half. The Beta Band came on in there cosmic style and played awesome. At the end of there set Kid Koala came out and played with them. K.K. did a great set of scratching with some RH mixed in. He didn't play for a very long time which suprised me. He left and the antisapation was on! I was so nervous i wanted to cry! Then at the other side of the stage i saw there feet and then i was their heads and I started screaming like a MAD WOMAN!!! The crowd roared as the 5 chaps came out. They looked well rested and happy. Thom came out with a HUGE smile on his face. The went on to play the crowd pleasing National Anthem, had a false start on Airbag, following with Morning Bell a hell of a version, the tinny guitared Lucky, and the cooked up Knives Out. Thom had great little comments in between the songs. Then he announced "This one is called Pact". I nearly died when I heard it! Unbleveable rock version of this awesome song. This was followed by the mellow No Suprises. Then came one of my favs Dollars and Cents. Thom was acting very funny during this song. He was acting kinda like a woman who was modeling a bathing suit HEHE. And thats when he looked straight at me and I nearly keeled over when he sang a coulple of lines looking at me. After that was anther mellow song Street Spirit. Then Thom got quite talkative in dedicating Pearly* to the hard rock cafe and about a gig in Mexico they did there and about Kurt Cobain's guitar and sweater. The place hten EXPLODED then Just came on and kept on that mood for I Might Be Wrong. Just before Paranoid Android Thom asked the crowd what they wanted to hear next, he followed the loud roar with "how about this one" and they preceded to play. Thom just got wilder and wilder when Idioteque came on. He was dancing up a storm!! MY god his head and his body convulsed into what looked like a person going into sezures. GO THOM! We need more of that dancing in this world! It wasn't just him dancing like that too! It was the entire crowd! I literlly went nuts myself and though I was going to pass out! I really don't remember Everything in its right place (due to idioteque) but i do remember a wall of sound from both Jonny and Ed. Thom then left the stage in a complete daze almost. Thom, Jonny and Colin came back for the encore. They started to play Like Spinnning Plates and had a couple of mishapses but after a little cursing Thom just said OH WELL to it and started at the lyrics. This song literally is so good live its scary! After the hair standing up from LSP they played Talk Show Host which added to the erie mood. After did a lovely You and Whose Army, and a head banging Bends. They left and came back to do an always awesome Karma Police and the the candles on the cake were lit when they finished off it all with the Tourist. They left and I was very sad, but thats a show! The guitar techs then threw out the set lists and thoms water bottles. I caught one of the bottles to my suprise. Plus I got some great pictures also! The crowd let loose and left. I will NEVER forget this ever. They pull off a hell of a show, thats why they are the best! In all it was one of the best days of my life! Even though the ride home was like 4 hours and totally excrutiating. Cheers! MEg.
