24. How To Disappear Completely...
by Peter Cullen
Picture the scene: 10:30am at the arena and there were only
2 other people queueing. "Looks like we got here just
in time, eh?" I said to my friends, yet people only started
arriving at around 5:00pm! I couldn't believe it and was kind
of annoyed 'cos it was FREEZING. Before leaving my house I
had recorded a minidisc with my own songs on it with the intention
of throwing it to the band - I don't know why... It would
just be cool if Radiohead listened to one of MY songs.
My songs are REALLY crap though.
But anyway, enough of that. The doors opened at 6:30pm and
it was a mad rush to get to the front - but I got there. The
support band, APC or something were woeful. I don't know what
radiohead were thinking when they chose THEM; they were rappers
who had no sense of
rhythm when it came to their instruments (the keyboard player
would randomly hit keys and the man on the drum machine must've
been trying his best to screw up the songs). Having said that
though, they're very talented RAP ARTISTS, and i think they
should lay off the instruments.
Then the moment arrived when Radiohead came on stage. The
place went NUTS. I looked over my shoulder to see over 7,000
people behind me pushing with all their might to try and get
through to the front... but *I* wasn't frickin' moving! I
was standing in between Thom and Jonny and had i good view
of all Jonny's weird equipment (i wonder how much his pedal
board ALONE costs?).
As soon as they walked on stage colin went straight for his
bass and rattled the place with The National Anthem (during
which Thom broke a string). I think after that they went on
to play Hunting Bears, sorry i forgot to write down a setlist!
Then it was Morning Bell (one of my favourites). Thom wasn't
very talkative, but in the middle of No Surprises i gave him
the thumbs-up gesture and he looked at me like he was gonna
KILL me, but i thought "fuck-sakes Thom, you better not
cut me down" and kept my thumb up with a crazy grin on
my face, and he let out this big smile.
Half way through I Might Be Wrong something was up with Jonny's
Guitar so Thom stopped everyone and started again. Ed looked
like Tom Cruze and didn't talk at all, Jonny rarely looked
at the crowd whereas Phil and Colin were having a GREAT time!
Colin bobbing his head back and forth and between songs Phil
peeped over his drum-kit with a gleeful look on his face.
After hunting bears i made a drumming motion with my arms
and phil saw it and laughed.
I never knew how Ed made the weird sound at the start of Lucky
until last night - he strums the strings at the head of the
guitar, just after the fretboard. My Iron Lung was great,
really getting the crowd into the mood. Street Spirit was
dedicated to "all the Americans who are trying to get
home". During Idioteque Thom went MAD AS A HATTER and
started dancing around like a loon, as was Colin, which was
great. They played The Bends on one of their encores which
in my opinion was a wee bit too slow... and spinning plates
was a real treat but i think jonny was
having trouble with his synthesiser. Talk Show Host kicked
ass, Thom came out on his own and played True Love Waits (bloody
brilliant).
Finally, as the band walked off stage for the last time that
night, I unleashed the minidisc, but no one picked it up.
The crew will hopefully give it to the band but I doubt it.
So, all in all it was a damn good night out. Peace Y'all!

It had been 4 years since Radiohead last played in belfast:
on that occasion it was a secret preparation show for Glastonbury
when they played to 600people. The Odyssey arena in Belfast,
home of the Belfast giants, holds a few thousand more.
The first thing i noticed was the sound quality. The tent
tour was a unique experience but the indoor sound was always
going to be far superior.
The band duly burst into action with the national anthem....one
of those songs you feel the band will never grow tired of
playing. Next came hunting bears.....a song which i mentally
had envisaged jonny playing guitar on but no..it was thom
and he laughed lots while he played it....like he was wondering
what we all must be thinking....he did break a string during
hunting bears.
next came morning bell. its definately a live song more so
than i recorded song i feel....a whole new atmosphere emerges
when its played live..... and phil loves his beat.
Karma Police was as anthemic as ever...the audience blasting
out as much vocal as they could.....isnt funny how a large
amount of people singing can do so in tune but separate them
and....disaster.
The song of the night for myself personally was " Like
Spinning Plates": on tape the songs is a backward fest
of nice noise with a vocal which is not clearly audible...yet
live its a beautiful heartmelting piano song with a lot of
feeling in the lyrics....i guess whoever wrote the lyrics
had something to get off their chest.
True Love Waits was a fantastic surprise. i hoped and hoped..and
well it all happened. fantastic...beautiful.
idioteque was another which sounded particularly impressive.
It was a pleasure to watch tho performing to the crowd....his
antics to "You and whose Army" were an absolute
pleasure....with the mounted camera on the piano he played
to the audience on the big screens a bit like a villain in
an pantomine.....beautiful eye close ups while singing "
you can take us all"..a joy to watch.
the other pleasure was wacthing Colin dance and knowing that
he really loved what he was doing...he did at one point come
to the front of the stageand wave and dance....
it was great to see Jonny every so often look upards almost
squinting against the lights to the area in which i was seated.
i waved repeatedly back and i think everyone thought i was
a bit sad...but what i can i say..they're my heroes,
A fantastic show.....ten times better than the tent tour.
COME BACK SOONER GUYS!!!

Radiohead's return to Belfast on Friday night turned out
to be a joyous end to one of the most tragic weeks most of
us will eve endure. The bad played for over 2 hours at the
behest of a hungry audience who tempted them back on for 3
encores - including the rare treat of Thom playing a solo
rendition of 'True Love Waits'.
Hunting Bears and Like Spinning Plates also got a run out
and I'm sure I wasn't the only one surprised to note that
Knives Out and Lucky were still in the set after the events
in New York.
Thom wasn't overly talkative but it was clear to us all that
he and the rest of the band were enjoying it. Street Spirit
was dedicated "to all the Americans who are trying to
get home."
In the live arena as well as the studio, Radiohead continue
to chart new territory and it was a pleasure to drop in on
this part of their journey.
