'You can't say no to Radiohead'
Rock Werchter organiser Herman Schueremans talks about the Rock Werchter Festival. Sixteen of the total of 50 acts are confirmed. Besides Radiohead, Björk, Underworld, Metallica, Queens Of The Stone Age, Moby, Massive Attack, Coldplay & R.E.M will playing in Belgium. Schueremans explains how he got so many big acts: "It doesn't always work out as you want. Usually acts plan to do a festival in England. But, then they realise that they might as well add another show on the continent. We've already booked a couple of headliners when bands started to call us. What do you do when Radiohead ask if they can play at Werchter? Say 'Sorry, you can't come'? This band is way too good for that. That's why we've added a fourth day." [from 3voor12 in dutch]

Thom Vs. Moby
Here's an entry from Moby's online journal at moby.com [thanks Scott]:
Interesting question...moby vs. thom yorke.
well looked at hypothetically (cos i love radiohead and i think that thom yorke is a genius) i would assess things as such:
1-singing ability-no question here. thom yorke has the voice of an angel and i have the voice of an in-bred pig farmer. so he wins.
2-hair. no question again. thom has hair. i don't. thom wins again.
3-resemblance to martin short. again. thom and martin short are doppelgangers.
i only resemble other bald guys (cos as we all know, every bald white guy kind of looks like every other bald white guy). winner: thom.
4-fighting ability. here i have no idea. i'm guessing that we'd both be pretty inept in a fight. so unless he has some martial arts training that i'm not aware of i would have to say that a fight between us would end in a stalemate.
5-debating skills. here i might have the edge, just because radiohead have been so universally loved during the course of their career. during my career lots of people have hated me, so i've had to develop some fairly proficient and defensive debating skills. so in debating i would have to say, winner: me.
6-survival skills in the woods. again, i'm guessing this would be a draw as we're both probably lacking in outdoors survival skills. but i do believe that thom lives in the country, and i live in the city. so he might have an edge there. winner: thom.
7-red carpet award shows skills. here it's no question, i'm a practiced media-whore, and thom likes to stay home. so i would win hands down. winner: me (with great shame).
8-hygiene. ooh, that's a hard one... i'll give us both the benefit of the doubt and say that it would be a tie due to our impeccable grooming and hygiene habits.
so the end result is that thom wins. which is probably for the best.
thank you.

Phil's Chat
Radiohead's Phil Selway chatted live online yesterday as part of his work with the Samaritans. While remaining tight lipped about the new album, the drummer did comment on the band's music and its relationship with his charity work. When asked what he felt about people describing Radiohead's music as 'depressing' he replied:
"That's not a silly question considering how many people have said our music is depressing! Obviously I don't see it that way. Thom confronts uncomfortable issues in his lyrics but ultimately there's always a sense of moving through these and I feel the music is uplifting."
Selway also said that his work with Radiohead and Samaritans had enjoyed "a parallel existence in my life since 1986" and revealed that his fellow band mates were "very sympathetic to the work of Samaritans and support myself and the organisation whole heartedly."
Phil also said that he won't do any vocals on the new album: "My vocal talents have just been given a long period of gardening! Thom's backing vocal bumped mine off a track (you might be pleased to know)."

David Gray on Radiohead
In an interview with the Chicago Sun Times, David Gray talks about his approach on making music: "We wanted to go in a kind of Phillip Glass direction and see what happens, or be a bit more Jim O'Rourke about it. To allow the music to take over and see where the song fits in in a different way. I guess what I'm saying is experimentation. For that I think I need to break and rewrite the way that I make songs and consider music, to challenge it in the same way that Radiohead did with "Kid A." [full story]

Radiohead in SPIN
Radiohead is mentioned in the current edition of SPIN magazine, in an article entitled "Essential Britpop":
RADIOHEAD, THE BENDS:
In Cobain-worthy metaphors, Thom Yorke makes his alienation skin-crawlingly physical-IV Drips and iron lungs, blood and ash, bones and teeth-while Jonny Greenwood builds a labyrinth of beguiling art-rock guitar. It's the last Radiohead record that remotely counts as Britpop; from here on, it got complicated. CLASSIC SONG: "Just," for Greenwood's crazy Sonic Youth-funk solo, a reminder of how much this band sacrificed when they decided guitars were evil. [thanks Matt]
