'Creep' number 6 in best songs of the decade

Oasis ballad Wonderwall has been named the best song of the decade in a poll. The song won top place above other songs like Radiohead's 'Creep', which ended up at number 6. The poll was commissioned by UK radio station Virgin to celebrate its tenth anniversary. Full list and story: bbc.com

Beacon Theatre update

According to Reuters the 2$Bill show will air June 17. The show at New York's Beacon Theater is expected to take place June 6, the day before the band's appearance at Long Island's Field Day Festival. Originally thought to be airing on MTV, the concert will be shown exclusively on MTV2. The network is also planning live coverage of the June 7-8 Field Day event, which will also boast performances by the Beastie Boys and Beck. [thanks John & Jennifer]

German tour dates mystery [solved]

EMI Germany announced the following German dates on their website: May 16th (Köln), May 17th (Berlin), May 19th (Munich). These dates seemed unlikely for May (although very likely for June), but it appears EMI's webmaster made an error and posted the dates for Skin (ex-Skunk Anansie) in the Radiohead section. 'Secret' Hail to the Thief tracklisting

The elaborate artwork for the new Radiohead album is yet again set to become a collector's item as 'Hail to the Thief' is revealed in the form of a road-map.The group, who based the artwork to last album 'Amnesiac' on an old library book, have designed and made 'Hail To The Thief' in the format of a road map and a number of early copies of the album come in the form of a real fold out map, as pictured on the right. The sleeve also gives an alternative name for each song.

Speaking exclusively to NME.COM, Thom Yorke explained the thinking behind it. He revealed that in the political fall-out of the September 11 attacks on the US and subsequent war in Afghanistan, certain phrases used on the radio stuck out to him. "I was listening to lots of Radio 4," he said. "Whenever I heard words that rang bells in my head, I'd write them down, until I head this really long list, which is basically much of the artwork."

Yorke has also told the BBC that he was reduced to tears on hearing new single 'There There' finished for the first time. The track has had a famously long gestation period, and at one point was considered 'lost' by band insiders.

"I blubbed my eyes out," he said. "I went to LA and Nigel (Godrich, the band's producer) played me the mix and it just made me cry, I was in tears for ages, I just thought it was the best thing we had ever done. There was something about it, I loved what he did.

"At one time I thought it was the song that we were going to lose which I was really upset about because the melody stayed with me for about four months without going away, which is really unusual as it doesn't take me long to get bored and I really never got bored of this song."

Capitol recruiting young blood?

This poster on the right was spotted by Angus Spottiswoode on Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles. It looks like the new promotional campaign for Radiohead's new album 'Hail to the Thief', which includes the track 'We suck young blood'? Until now the phone remains unanswered when you call the number, which translates to: 1 866-tot-hief. Filter Magazine have confirmed this is indeed related to the new album promotional campaign and these posters will go up all around America.

There are also some Metro Cards floating around which were handed out at a Flaming Lips show in New York City. The cards have some phone numbers on the back as well. Same story: phone keeps ringing and ringing.

More mysterious stuff: At the Amsterdam University (Netherlands) there are some folders that have been spread around the University. The folder reads: 'Radiohead Music Video Information In The Back of the Atrium, sign up and get more details on the shooting of the music video', illustrated with the Radiohead bears. There is no other information given and it's hard to get any information on this. There's some snippets of new artwork available at www.radiohead.tv (refreshing the page returns a new part). In an e-mail sent out last week mentioned there were videos, fan art, i-blips, tracks from the album, covers of singles, games, labyrinth game, etc to be hosted on this site. Four Tet to remix Scatterbrain

According to MTV.com Kieran Hebden (aka Four Tet) will remix new album track Scatterbrain. Four Tet supported Radiohead on their 2002 tour in Spain and Portugal. Four Tet will do his remix after he finished his North American tour. [thanks Douglas]

Jonny Greenwood on Sigur Ros collaboration

As reported earlier on ateaseweb.com Radiohead and Sigur Ros will create new music for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company's piece "Split Sides," which will debut Oct. 14 at New York's Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood reveals to Billboard.com that on opening night, each group will perform 20 minutes of live music with a twist: the dancers "won't have heard the music until they start."

"It is raising lots of interesting problems about what dance music is," Greenwood admits. "We're talking about the bands crossing from one to the other or sorting out a structure. It could be interesting. Maybe we'll all kind of surprise each other and do the opposite kind of music that we're known for."

"Split Sides" will also be staged Oct. 16-18 at BAM, with the dancers performing to a combination of pre-recorded music and live musicians attempting to recreate the Radiohead and Sigur Ros compositions. A similar arrangement will be utilized when Cunningham's troupe performs the piece elsewhere.

"Musicians copying what we're doing sounds bizarre to me," says Greenwood. "I feel for them! We only just know what we're doing. I'm sure it will be easy for them, but it just might be a bit weird."

A BAM spokesperson says Cunningham will add to the improvisational nature of the piece by employing two different stages and two different sets of costumes, allowing for various future permutations of the performance. Ticket information is not yet available, but the Oct. 14 debut will be a fundraiser of some kind. [from billboard.com, thanks josh]

Ed to join ADF on Glastonbury?

Asian Dub Foundation want Ed O'brien to join them onstage at this year's Glastonbury after he guested on their new album. The guitarist appears on 'Enemy Of The Enemy', and now ADF have been confirmed to appear on the Pyramid Stage the same day Radiohead headline (June 29), the dance-rock collective's Steve 'Chandrasonic' Chandra Savale hopes their pal will be happy to reprise his role in front of thousands.He said: "I always look forward to Glastonbury, we haven't done it for about three years." Courtney Love disappointed by Radiohead

Courtney Love is in Europe right now recording her latest album, to be called America's Sweetheart. This is from today's Courier-Mail in London: "[Courtney Love] has been quoted saying she loves Alex from Blur because he drinks pink champagne, and that she loves the White Stripes. But Radiohead have disappointed her - she has her own theory about Thom Yorke's apparent misery: "I think that Thom Yorke is really bitter that Creep came around during grunge and that we all went `OK, Creep, loser, whatever dude', it kind of rode off, y'know, it's a good song, but like who cares, really?" Colin: Hail To The Thief will have digital -high quality- artwork

According to Colin Greenwood 'Hail to the Thief' will include digital high quality artwork: "You have to see that it's digital information that you could use in different ways. So, we'd really like the idea that we could give people like really good quality images of the artwork. So, that they could print out this beautiful high definition quality posters and stuff of these amazing paintings Stanley's done for the album, which should be really cool. So, we don't mind once the record's released images and things go up on the internet. Because you can't stop it. It's important for people to recognize that there is that side, the digital side and there's the physical side to the work, which we've spent a lot of time and work and money on. Dutch shows rumoured

According to VPRO's Sander Kerkhof Radiohead are rumoured to play some dates in the Netherlands this year.

Jonny: 'Leaked version was from the first day of mixing'

VPRO's Sander Kerkhof asked Jonny about the leak of 'Hail to the thief'. Jonny said the album was on the net "a week after we sent the final one to EMI. It's very early but we kind of expected it. In January we would take CD's home to listen to them once and then destroy them. It sounds crazy now. And now it sounds like a good idea. That's how we were working. but apparently all that wasn't enough. The Gloaming is a minute longer on this internet version. We cut a whole minute out, because we knew it was a bit long. We wouldn't play it to anybody. That's why it's weird"

On the difference between the internet version and the final version Jonny said: "Sometimes people might not notice much difference. Some instruments have been taken away and some have been added. It depends on which song you choose. On Myxomatosis we took all the emphasis off the drums and put it on the out of tune keyboards to make it more frightening and just change the mood of the song. The first day of mixing, which is what you are hearing, was a cd we kind of went through and we said 'no, no.. that's no good, that's close, we'll start again with that one' That's what frustrating."

Paperbag Writer & Where Bluebirds Fly to feature as B-sides

Paperbag Writer & Where Bluebirds Fly will be released on the There There CD1 and 12" vinyl. Ateaseweb.com reported the Paperbag Writer release earlier. Where Bluebirds Fly has been added recently. At the moment it's unsure what the tracks on CD/DVD 2 will be.

It seems like some more new songs have been recorded. Four new songs have been registered at publisher Warner Chappell: Instrumental, New York Toy String Furniture, Noir & Too Eazy. One or two might be available on There There CD/DVD 2 or as b-sides for one of the other forthcoming singles.

Promoter on Radiohead @ Red Rocks

Here is more confirmation about the Radiohead Red Rocks date - straight from the promoter's mouth (Jason Miller of House of Blues), in an article in the Rocky Mountain News:

New York Times on Hail To The Thief

Here's a short review of the new album from the New York Times:
RADIOHEAD: `HAIL TO THE THIEF' (Capitol) The advance word was that this album was a return to the rock of the group's 1995 album "The Bends," but once a band has evolved as far as Radiohead has, it is impossible to go backward. So while "Hail," due in June, may be more song-oriented than recent Radiohead albums, it incorporates elements of the drive, the drone, the drift and the dance of all the group's previous CD's. It turns out the ebay ticket auction for the NY Beacon Theatre show were cancelled because the date has not been confirmed yet.: "It is with great regret that at this time the T.J. Ebay tickets Beacon Theatre cancelled

The Auction on Ebay for the New York Beacon Theatre concert has been cancelled. Proceeds of the acuctioned tickets were supposed to benefit the TJ Martell Foundation for Leukemia, Cancer, and AIDS Research. Bidding began at $300 and was up to $2,275 before it was cancelled. The auction should've ended on April 25th. At the moment it's unsure why it was cancelled. [thanks niko]

Beacon Theatre gig confirmation?

Fall tour most likely in November

NME confirms the rumoured fall tour as reported on 'at ease' last week. Radiohead are planning to follow their Glastonbury appearance with a full UK tour in November. The group will return to the British Isles after overseas festival and tour dates to end the year with a full tour of bigger UK venues in support of their new album 'Hail To The Thief', which is released in the UK on June 9.

Although final details are currently unconfirmed, sources have told NME.COM the shows will take place in "late autumn time" and in venues much larger than their May 'club' dates, which are 2,500 capacity in size.

A source close to the band told NME.COM: "This tour will be a much bigger affair. They are looking at huge venues. They wanted to do the small shows first to warm-up, but these gigs will give anyone who was disappointed the first time around the chance to see them. November is the most likely month." Hail to the thief stolen on December 15th?

According to Bernard Lenoir who hosts C'est Lenoir on french radio station France Inter, the early mixes of the album were stolen on December 15th when Nigel Godrich was mixing the album.

Upcoming releases

As reported earlier, the new Radiohead album, 'Hail to the thief' will be released as a regular cd, limited edition and limited edition double vinyl. According to CDWOW the limited edition cd will be released in a rectangular wallet with fold-out map (Similar to fold-out road map). Italian ticket site TicketOne has three tour dates available. As previously announced on ateaseweb.com Radiohead will play Bergamo, Firenze (Florence) & Ferrara in July. War delays the Radiohead story

The Radiohead Story wasn't broadcast by the BBC Worldservice yesterday. According to BBC WS this has happened because of the coverage of the war in Iraq: "We anticipate that we will return to normal scheduling next week, when the first programme in the four-part series The Radiohead Story will be heard at the normal times for The Music Feature."

Glastonbury 'reserve' tickets snapped up

The reserve list opened to sell tickets for the Glastonbury festival seized from touts has now closed. Michael Eavis had announced that a list would be started for people unable to get tickets first time round. All 112,000 tickets sold out with 23 hours, but hundreds were almost immediately placed on sale at inflated prices on Ebay.

"Let me explain the situation - we did make a list because we thought we'd have about 500 tickets back," Mr Eavis said. "We still have to retrieve them and make sure the whole legal thing is all above board, but we think we've got in the region of 500 tickets." There will be no more than that, he insists. "We won't have any more tickets available. The ones that we can retrieve have all been bagged. The list is now closed, I'm afraid."

Radiohead Set To Catch A Thief

The biggest ‘whodunnit?’ in rock history has been launched by Radiohead, as they prepare a full investigation to try to catch the person responsible for the internet leak of their new album ‘Hail To The Thief’.
The hunt has been intensified by the group’s reported anger at the event, with band members expressing their discontentment with the situation.
Now Xfm Online can report that a full internal investigation will be launched by Radiohead’s record label Parlophone to find the culprit(s) responsible for leaking the album onto the net. However, despite the disclosure, Parlophone have taken the decision not to bring forward the release date of new single ‘There There’, despite industry rumours to the contrary. The single will still be released on May 26 with the album set to be launched officially on June 9. [from xfm]

Glastonbury copies Radiohead ticket tactics

Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis says he is going to follow Radiohead lead and withhold tickets for his festival from opportunists attempting to sell them illegally on Internet auction sites. All 112,000 tickets for the June event were snapped up with 23 hours of going on sale last Monday (March 31). Almost immediately, they started to appear on ebay retailing for at least £450 a pair - more than twice the £105 face value.

Eavis said that after reading in the NME how Radiohead plan to prevent would-be touts using ebay to sell-on tickets for their UK tour, he would copy the template. "It was your story last week," he told NME. "We've already written to the people on ebay and told them they won't get their tickets. We've sent them emails. They know now they won't get tickets. We do have the list as it comes up on the website. We send them an email and say we've seen you on the website, you won't get your ticket. End of story."

Eavis also said that he has started a reserve lists of fans seeking tickets. They would be offered the tickets seized from online touts. "I've got someone working on this full time," he said. "We've got to find a way of stopping it so we can get those tickets back and sell them to more deserving people. We're making a list. We clawed 500 back yesterday alone." Incorrect Field Day Line-up

According to the Field Day Festival producer, the line-up that was posted here yesterday was not the final one. Although Radiohead will be headling the festival, those other bands are mostly not going to play. An annoucement is exepected on April 14th.

Phil on Hail to the Thief leak

Phil had his say on the leak tracks as well: "This is just a quick post. I too am disappointed that the album has already been uploaded onto the net. We don't like anybody to hear our recordings until we are completely happy with them. These mixes of the songs were still "work in progress'. As such, we wouldn't have chosen to present the album to people in this form. I feel that the recording process has been compromised for us. Its not that these mixes are bad, its just that the actual album is better - honest.

Radiohead to play Spain in July?

My Spanish is not what is used to be, but according to today's Galician newspaper, El Faro de Vigo, Radiohead are scheduled to perform on July 17th at Parque de Castrelos in Vigo, Spain. In addition to this show, another gig in Madrid is very likely to happen.[from Supernovapop]

Radiohead headline first day of Field Day Music Festival

As reported before Radiohead will headline the Field Day Festival on Long Island. This has now been confirmed by the (unfinished) Field Day Music Festival website. The band will play on June 7th together with artists like Beck, Underworld, Belle & Sebastian and Spiritualized. The second day has artists like Beasty Boys, Strokes, Blur, Sigur Ros, Flaming Lips & Royksopp listed. [thanks Michael]

What is mastering all about

Radiohead documentary on BBC Worldservice

Radiohead are making a band documentary for the World Service, Planet Sound can reveal. The Radiohead Story runs from 9.30am on the World Service for four Mondays from April 14. Series producer James Finlayson told Planet Sound he's in talks to preview songs from Hail To The Thief. The third episode will focus on their live career, including radio session tracks. Vancouver radio station airs unfinished album

Local Vancouver radio station XFM aired some of the new Radiohead tracks leaked on the Internet, saying the buzz it creates is worth risking legal action. Pat Cardinal, station manager and program director at rock station 104.9 XFM, insists any publicity is good publicity in the battle to stay competitive with fans sharing music for free on the Internet.

"This stuff isn't supposed to be released for three months but it's all over the Internet and we can't ignore it," he said Thursday. "What's dangerous is if listeners start going online to hear new music, we have to be there no matter what."

Cardinal posted on the station's Web site a "cease-and-desist" order from EMI Music Canada, the band's Canadian label, ordering XFM to stop airing unauthorized Radiohead tracks. [from jam & canada.com]

HTTT to be released as a Special Edition and on double vinyl

Stanley Downwood has just said that Radiohead's new album will be released as a 'special edtion'. The cd booklet will include lyrics as well. Stanley also mentioned a website update for june. As reported earlier Stanley was very on the leaked recordings, today he added: "yep i was pissed off, but i think the real record will blow the stolen work completely... away. ok i think i should go. lovely lovely double vinyl coming out you see. its going to be LUSH".

Colin: "Stealing wrong music is wrong"

Colin Greenwood also talked about the leaked track on the official board: "I just wanted to back up what jonny said the other day. We're all unhappy with the wrong mixes from the wrong songs being stuck up on the net. It's like having your house done over half way through having it done up. All the attention is gratifying, but we want it when all our hard work's done and the best it can be. Until then, this is all just unhelpful noise. Wait until you see the final, real, finished album!!!!!"

New song: Paperbag Writer

There's a new Radiohead track registered at the band's publisher Warner Chappell. 'Paperbag Writer' is a newly added song to WC's list. This could mean that this is one of the tracks from the 'Hail to the Thief' sessions that didn't make it to the album, but might get a future release as a B-side.

Field Day Festival: tickets on sale next week?

Here's some more info on the Long Island festival. The festival is being put on by Andrew Dreskin, one of the founders of Ticketweb. There are still a # of permits to be obtained. Radiohead IS committed to play. Tickets are expected to be on sale next week.

As for Bonaroo NE as far as I know Radiohead is NOT scheduled to play. The headliners are Dave Matthews and the Dead. [thanks beat royalty]

Madonna mentions Radiohead

There were 2 Radiohead references in Madonna's interview in Q magazine this month: After listening to the opening bars of the Beverley Hill Hotel Polo Lounge's early evening entertainment by a grim-faced young singer-songwriter Madonna said drily "Everyone also wants to be Thom Yorke these days". Confirmed: Radiohead to play Summersonic Festival

As previously reported Radiohead will be playing the Summersonic Festival in Japan. The band will play on the 2nd and 3rd of August. We're still waiting for ticket information.

Time Out NY: Radiohead headline Long Island Festival on June 7th

The long island festival was posted in the latest copy of Time Out NY magazine: Radiohead and th Beastie Boys will headline field day, a 2 day "music and camping" festivalto be staged at Calverton enterprise park, 9 miles west of riverhead, LI this summer. Radiohead will top the june 7th bill, while the beasties finish things off on june 8. the concerts will also feature sigur ros, NERD lis fair, beth orton, spiritualized, my morning jacket, ben lee and rancid offshoot the transplant; many more preformers are expected to confirrm in the following weeks. there will also be art installations, bootha and other familiar festival fare. Capitol is reportedly working on enhancements for the the new Radiohead album, 'Hail to the Thief' to help encourage sales. [from filter]

KROQ plays There There again

KROQ (L.A.) played There There again due to popular request. The changes were as folows:

.the little guitar intro part from the live version of the song is there.
.the bass on the drums was more pronounced.
.a few cymbals added to the song..!! sounds great.
.about 1 minute in total was cut, it has to be an edited version (for the radio); the second "just cause you feel it" is gone I believe; it goes into the "there there" vocal part immediately
.the signature guitar part comes in a bit earlier than it does in the mp3, but still not as thom sings "there there...!!"
.during the signature guitar part there is some more guitar layering, very slight but still there.
.all in all the mids are a bit stronger.

Jonny: "Leaked tracks are stolen early recordings"

Jonny said theat the leaked tracks are stolen recordings of early work. Here's what he had to say:
"So it turns out the leaked music is a stolen copy of early, unmixed edits and roughs - so we're kind of pissed off about it, to be honest.
I see it like this (this is just me): there's napster-style file sharing of released music, then there's early internet distribution of what we at least consider to be a finished body of work. Then there's this - work we've not finished, being released in this sloppy way, ten weeks before the real version is even available. It doesn't even exist as a record yet.....
So yes, we're annoyed - the songs are good on the recordings, which you can hear. But we worked on them after this point until we were happy with them. This is why we're pissed off - we didn't give up on them in February (which is what you're hearing) and it's just a shame that, to your ears, we did.
So of course people will still download them and hear them, I can understand the temptation. It's not you lot I'm pissed off about, it's just the situation I guess. It's stolen work, fer fuck's sake.
What do you all think ? I know it'll come out for real eventually, and it'll all be fine, but I though you all might as well know what's in my head....

Nigel Godrich: 'Leaked album not mixed, some of it itsn't even finished'

Nigel Godrich commented on the leaked tracks again today at the official mb: "Hey listen, Its not that it's not mastered........ It's not mixed! Some of it isn't even finished. comprendez?"

EMI on Triple J's album airplay

As reported earlier on ateaseweb.com, songs from the upcoming Radiohead album 'Hail To The Thief' were splattered across radio in Australia by Triple J. The leak took EMI by surprise. Director of Promotions Malcolm Hill said: "It is not something we had anything to do with. It hasn't come from the band or the record company. It is theft. It must have been stolen".
Arnold Frolows, music director of Triple J says he phoned EMI before playing the record. "First thing I did was phone the record company and there was enthusiasm to play it. The last time we did this was with the new Nirvana single. Something popped up and we played it right away. We expected to hear from the record company but they ignored it".
Downloading of songs from the internet and broadcasting them is a breach of copyright and both parties agree. "It is against the broadcasting act PPCA" says Hill. "It has a 'cease and desist' on it now because they have the copyright" says Frolows. "It is a fine line between finding something and playing it. There is an argument that playing it once is letting people know what it is like but it is theft. I suggested we would play a few tracks and be done with it. It certainly wasn't a bad bit of PR". Frolows says they won't be playing it again until it is released. Hill says EMI won't be taking any action against Triple J but agrees if the commercial stations now follow suit it will be a major problem.
As to where the leak came from in the first place Frolows says "it would have to be pretty close to the band. I can't imagine the record company doing it. It doesn't help them at all. But we don't know what is going on between Radiohead and EMI."
As for listener reaction Frolows says there really hasn't been any. "We didn't pursue it far enough" he says. "There wasn't major reaction. If we kept playing it overnight and again today we would start getting requests". And his personal evaluation of the album? "The album is fantastic. It is what we have been waiting for the last few years. This is the album we wanted the last two albums to be" he says. [from undercover, thanks dr. benway]

More on Radiohead's NY show

To further fuel the rumors on Radiohead's NY show, another source confirms that the festival will be taking place at Calverton Enterprise Park in Riverhead, LI. This is the same location where Creamfields tried to mount a US show a few years back. The show has been greenlighted by the town board, although there is some community opposition and the promoters still need to secure certain permits (police, fire, etc...). Likely, the show will be able to go ahead as planned, although a second festival scheduled in August (Bonaroo North) will be dependent on the success of the first.

From the East Hampton Independent: NYMF would be allowed to begin to occupy the site on May 5 until June 22. The multi-day event is slated for June 6 through 8. A crowd of 80,000 will be the maximum capacity, with 40,000 to 80,000 people expected each day. Many people are expected to be camping at the event.

Nigel Godrich confirms unmastered tracks leak

Radiohead's producer Nigel Godrich has confirmed on the official msg board that the tracks that leaked on Sunday were indeed the unmastered versions. At first Nigel asked: "...these mp3s. I reallly would actually love to know what stage of completion they are ..... I tried to look with Limewire but can't find em. Are they still d/l -able ???? Cheers N x". Later on he confirmed it with the following:"Its the rough mixes .... some tracks not even finished. aint that a bitch? Not really what I'd want the world to hear, frankly. boo." [thanks shimbot]

Official promos released today

Promos for Radiohead's new album 'Hail to the thief' are already handed out to the press. Needless to say, these copies contain the final mixed and mastered versions of the new tracks. We'll see how fast they will be converted to MP3 files. Speaking of which.. Capitol's already on a hunt, according to this site.

Glastonbury sold out

According to the official glastonbury website and aloud.com all the tickets for glastonbury have sold out. This includes all the retailers including HMV and Virgin aswell as those at waste. The tickets have sold out in record time. [thanks garry]

Tiny Mix Tapes review HTTT: 5.1

Unfortunately, not only did it break Radiohead, but it literally shattered the band's entire discography.
