Flaming Lips Vs. Radiohead: Knives Out
Tonight at Glastonbury, The Flaming Lips are playing before Radiohead, and Wayne from the Lips is hoping he can hang out with Thom and the rest of the guys: "I'm hoping I get to go backstage and at least talk to Radiohead, 'cause we do a cover of 'Knives Out' once in a while. So if we did 'Knives Out' that night, they didn't think we were making fun of them, or something like that."

Ed on Trade Justice Movement
In Metro (free London newspaper) Ed O'Brien was interviewed:
"Radiohead's involvement with the Trade Justice Movement came out of the awareness raised by the Jubilee 2000 campaign which highlighted the crippling burden of debt faced by the developing world.
Following on from that campaign, NGOs such as Christian Aid, Oxfam and CAFOD were telling us that, although aid and debt relief were essential, if we were to be truly effective in wiping it out in the long term, then the issue of trade and the illogical, grossly immoral rules that govern it had to be challenged. This is where the Trade Justice Movement has come in.
I like the fact that the Trade Justice Movement is a coalition. It reflects the way this campaign is supported by a great many people in this country who realise that, in an increasingly interdependent and globalised world, we in the richest countries have a responsibility to the world's poorest.
This is not merely a responsibility based on compassionate grounds. There are now, more so than ever, pragmatic reasons. Poverty and inequality are the greatest human threat to the well-being and security of all human beings on our planet. The Trade Justice Movement seeks to redress the balance." [thanks Rob]

After taken down, the painting will be cut to smaller pieces which will be sent to England in order to be signed by members of Radiohead. 'Hail to the Thief' straight to number 1
As reported earlier Radiohead scored its fourth consecutive U.K. No. 1 album as "Hail to the Thief" (Parlophone) went straight to the top of the new chart. It survived a challenge from Annie Lennox's "Bare" (RCA), which entered at No. 3. Meanwhile, Evanescence started a second week at No. 1 on the singles survey with "Bring Me To Life" featuring Paul McCoy (Epic). The most successful of Radiohead's four British No. 1 albums is its first, 1997's "OK Computer," which logged 75 weeks on the survey. The band also hit the peak with 2000's "Kid A," although that spent only 15 weeks on the chart, and 2001's "Amnesiac," which had a mere 12 weeks. [from Billboard, thanks David]

Radiohead at the Hultsfred Festival
Radiohead played at the Hultsfred Festival last night. A set that was partially broadcast on Swedish television. Thom was in a really good mood even though they had lots of problems with the sound (at one point Thom got so annoyed by the feedback from his acoustic that he said 'hello?' into it). My Iron Lung: "Hah! Now we're gonna play this one!" Kid A was introduced as "dance music" in a very posh accent. This version was much rockier than the 2000 tour version and hence a lot better. They crossed out songs for the first encore were Myxomatosis (they played Just) and Fake plastic trees (they played Street Spirit). The first half of Hunting bears was played after the National Anthem. Karma Police was played last instead of How To Disappear. I think it was because Thom was in a crowd pleasing mood. And he mixed up the words to the third(?) verse ("karma police arrest this... 'mumble' given it all I can"). Note the new setlist font. [thanks Tom & Henrik]

HTTT: The last Radiohead album?
“We deliberately spent a long time preparing, ”he says of recording
‘Hail To The Thief’,“And we got into the ideas of performance
at the same time as using a lot of electronics, so all the computer techniques
had to occur there and then. It’s something we’re getting very heavily
into. So you’d prepare the computers for all eventualities and you’d
go with them. It’s a very acoustic recordt his one, but I’ve found
out that we can do all this loud stuff with computers which is the direction I
think we’ll take. ”It also seems that Yorke is frustrated with the
confines of the traditional album format, possibly provoking a move to just releasing
EPs in thefuture.
“When you’re finishing a record, you have to confront the idea
of what it’s called, and there’s no getting away from the fact that
people are gonna be reacting in such a way. ”Yorke continued, “I
think next I’d love to just do EPs ‘cos I’ve had enough of
this whole album thing and that sort of level of pressure and scrutiny and the
way that it works in the music business.”

Radiohead back push for trade justice
Radiohead are backing the Trade Justice Movement's campaign for fairer rules
governing international trade. The band are supporting 'Scale Up for TradeJustice',
a national action to lobby all the UK's 659 MPs in their local constituencies
over a 24hour period on 27-28 June.
Ed O'Brien, Radiohead guitarist, said: "Our politicians have failed to
grasp what harm this government is doing by pushing for more and more free trade
- without taking into consideration its effect on poor people and the environment. We
want to make sure every MP gets a clear message that British voters want the
rules on international trade rewritten to make world trade work for the whole
world."
"On 27/28th June we are taking our message to every UK MP in their constituencies.
I would urge anyone who feels strongly about world poverty to join the Trade
Justice Movement MP lobby marathon."
"Radiohead's involvement with the Trade Justice Movement really came out
of the awareness raised by the Jubilee 2000 campaign that highlighted the crippling
burden of debt faced by the developing world. Following on from that campaign,
NGOs such as Christian Aid, Oxfam and CAFOD were telling us that, although aid
and debt relief were essential courses of action in alleviating poverty in the
Third World, if we were to be truly sincere and effective in wiping it out in
the long term then the issue of trade and the rules that govern it had to be
challenged. This is where the TradeJustice Movement has come in, highlighting
these illogical and grossly immoral rules of trade, making it comprehensible
to us in the general public."
Glen Tarman, Trade Justice Movement Coordinator, said: "The UK Government
says it wants trade to help end world poverty. Yet the Government is pushing
for policies in the World Trade Organisation that are biased towards rich countries
and the West's corporations. We want to put the spotlight on our Government's

Hail to the Thief sales
'HAIL TO THE THIEF' is on course to achieve the biggest first week album sales
in the UK this year after selling over 60,000 copies in just two days. If the
album, the band's sixth, continuesselling in such quantities it could even challenge
last year's best first week sales - 270,000 for Coldplay's 'A Rush Of Blood
To The Head' and 260,000 for Robbie Williams' 'Escapology'.
'Hail To The Thief' is currently selling more than the rest of the Top Five
put together, including Metallica's 'St Anger' and Stereophonics' 'You Gotta
Go There To Come Back', currently 2003's biggest first-week seller, having shifted
102,000 in that period.
HMV chart spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said: "It just goes to show how many
people are still into Radiohead. There's a degree of compulsion with this band."
[from nme,
thanks Ivan & Reuben]
In the USA Hail to the Thief is having a great first week by any account. After
one day of sales, the album looks like it will approach 250k for the week, with
plenty of stock in the marketplace.[thanks ari & jacek]

Pitchfork: Hail to the Thief: 9.3
Hail to the Thief doesn't dig up Britpop skeletonsfrom The Bends, and it's not OK Computer 2, asYorke has called it in the press. It is, however,a holding pattern. Thom's excusatory remarks onlyunderscore his chief failing: he can't grasp thatpure, radical change isn't always the best option, whatever personal pride he as an artist takesfrom doing something "new" (and personally,I think Eno and his German collaborators fromthe late 70s have plenty of reasons to bristleat Kid A). There's nothing to apologize for here:Radiohead are a band, and after a fashion, bandsare defined by their music. Much as U2's Zooropastill sounded like U2, anything Radiohead doesfrom here on out will sound like Radiohead.
That's one paragraph from the Pitchforkmedia.comreview. Read it in full at Pitchfork.

Director Chris Hopewell on 'There There' video
Chris Hopewel on XFM.co.uk “The actual shoot with Thom took four days, which was not bad. We shot him one day in location in the woods and then three in the studio in front of a green screen. And he was brilliant. He was absolute star. And he's such a bloody good actor, if he ever gets bored of singing he should move into that sort of area, ‘cos he takes directions really, really well but he also brings so much of his own character to it. The character that he plays in it, even though it's only a five minute thing there is some character development, you can see him becoming more greedy as he goes in and Thom did do that so well. That's the advantage of doing something over such a short period, it is quite intense and I think he did really get into the role of it really. I think he thoroughly enjoyed it too. I hope he did. Colin audio interview
There's an interview with Colin Greenwood available at Cutting Interviews. You can listen to an audio stream. Here's some bits from the interview:
How much does the audience's reaction influence the final songs? Colin: "With this record the audience really loved songs like 'There There' and the songs they didn't like, we didn't record [laughs]. This is a very democratic album in lots of ways and how we worked on the music and then how we played to music to the audience. After we finished playing the music to the audience we went into the studio for two and a half weeks. It's like a photograph of the tour taken of each song. It's like a memento. It's like we finished to whole thing before we started. Which is interesting."
Is that the reason why 'There There' was the first single and not '2+2=5'. Colin: "That's the one we wanted to have as a single as well. It might be a single one day. [Colin sings: 'It's the devils way now'] It's one of my favourite tunes on the record. It's great, it's cool, it's fast, it's loud, it's WOOF!"supposed to be four insertions for the ad. [Thanks Ben]

EMI Singapore, which distributes the album, did not agree to removing the last two lines in the ad and putting the song title, We Suck Young Blood, in quotes. An EMI spokesman said: "We felt that the ad would lose its essence if the changes were made." The ad, which originated from the UK, ran on May 28 was discontinued. Radiohead rhapsodies
Here are some bits and pieces from an interview with Christopher O'Riley for the Boston Herald.
Christopher O'Riley loves Radiohead. Only love may not be a strong enough word. "Go ahead and say it,'' O'Riley says when asked about his fascination with the English band. "Obsessive. There should be a life somewhere, right? It's really the only music I listen to when I'm not listening for work.''
Now O'Riley brings together the unlikely combination of his classical piano chops and the music of Radiohead on ``True Love Waits: Christopher O'Riley Plays Radiohead.'' It arrives in stores Tuesday, not coincidentally the release day of Radiohead's new "Hail To the Thief.''
The CD consists of O'Riley playing his own solo piano versions of 15 Radiohead songs drawn from the group's five albums and live EP. It's the only classical album ever to earn a four-star rating from Rolling Stone (Billy Joel's ``Fantasies and Delusions'' managed only 2).
Once O'Riley had a dozen transcriptions finished, he performed a Radiohead recital on NPR's "Performance Today.'' Radiohead fans quickly made the show available via the Internet, sparking interest both in O'Riley and classical music.
"I had Radiohead fans writing me saying, `I see you're playing Mozart and I've always wondered what Mozart's about,' '' O'Riley says. ``It's like all of a sudden they had a friend in the business. Now there's a whole dialogue going on.
"The Radiohead fanboard I've been on most often is called ateaseweb.com, where you'll find 200 Radiohead fans chatting away at any given time of day. People will say, `I know you're into Radiohead. What would you recommend?' I go to some of the music that Radiohead has drawn on, like (Olivier) Messiaen. A song on their new record called `Sail to the Moon' is almost an homage to the violin, cello and piano movement in Messiaen's Quartet. It starts out with this bell-like set of chords.''

Hail to the Thief artwork exhibition
To celebrate the release of the eagerly awaited Radiohead album Hail to the Thief, Virgin Megastores are holding an exhibition of the original artwork from the album. Eight pieces of artwork each 1.5m2 will be exhibited from Friday 6th June at Virgin Megastores, Oxford Street. This will also be the first time that the new album will be played in its entirety.
Radiohead’s latest musical feat was largely conceived in 2001, around the birth of lead singer, Thom Yorke’s first child. Surrounded by both the idyllic beauty of his rural home and the daily radio reports of the global conflicts, Yorke began to express his thoughts by writing songs. This contemplative alternation between peace, anger and foreboding colours much of the album.
The artwork was designed by Stanley Donwood, Stanley took his inspiration from not only discovering what was inside the band heads at that time but also from where they were based when recording the album – L.A.

Thom & Jonny at Electric Lady Studios
Thom & Jonny performed two sessions of an acoustic set at Electric Lady studios for about 75 people. It was so moving, that Thom appeared to have a few tears and went backstage for a moment. It was very emotional, very powerful. "I Will" was a thrill to hear as well.
The second session had an encore with Neil Young's 'After The Goldrush'– False start, Thom kicks Jonny off stage, doesn’t allow him to play along with it promising he’ll let him back to play another one. Thom stops in middle of the song, starts again saying “ I AM gonna finish it!” After he is done, person in crowd yells, “Saved us some time… You missed the Getting High verse!” Thom replies, “Never get the lyrics off the internet and not bother to look at them before the show…”
At the end of the perfromance there was a Q&A with the full band. They all were in high spirits, and dang it if Thom wasn't smiling broadly. The only negative part was the lack of interesting questions, and the mic hogs. Unfortunately people felt they should stay on the mic and drag on the questions. The Band confirmed Stephen Malkmus for first half of North American Tour and Supergrass for the 2nd Leg. Bothe setlists are available in the gigography. [thanks sensitiveeyes, chris & patrick]

W/C: This one's optimistic
Radiohead's management have said that the situation regarding Warner Chappell has now been resolved. Warner Chappell will be issuing yearly free licenses from now on allowing all the fan websites, like ateaseweb.com to use lyrics as before. Letters will be going out detailing this in the next few days.
At the moment Warner Chappell have not contacted ateaseweb.com on the license. The last e-mail from Mr. Olsen at Warner Chappell included the following:
Due to some of the backlash that has resulted from the e-mails I sent out yesterday, I will be having a telephone conference call later this morning with the Managing Director of our London office and the head of our Business Affairs Dept. Given the reasonable nature of your request, I will ask this group for their opinion and potential approve so you can legally do what you have asked to do.
In the meantime there are some stories available on the web regarding this matter. Field Day Festival to move to Giants Stadium
The Riverhead Town Supervisor Robert Kozakiewicz announced this morning that a two-day rock concert, the Field Day Festival, scheduled for this weekend in Calverton would not happen. Soon after, Ticketmaster was advertising on its web site that the event had been scaled down to a one-day show and would be held at Giants Stadium Saturday.
A Giants Stadium spokesperson said that although negotions have taken place, no deal has been reached. The change of venue was not confirmed by the concert's promoters.
Ticketmaster's web site said the new show would include Radiohead and the Beastie Boys, but did not make clear how many of the 35 other bands originally booked for the show would be part of the 12-hour concert. Tickets for the show were to go on sale at 5 p.m. through Ticketmaster.com, according to the ticket web site.
Tickets for the Calverton show will not be honored at Giants Stadium and people who initially purchased their tickets with a credit card online or by phone will receive an automatic refund on their credit card, according to Ticketmaster. Those who purchased them in other ways must return their tickets at the point of purchase for a refund.
Promoters today were hustling to find a new venue after the Suffolk officials declared that the concert would not be allowed on the East End as had been proposed. "In the interest of the health, safety and welfare of the residents of the Town of Riverhead and the public, I believe that the event should be cancelled," Kozakiewicz said in a prepared statement. [from newsday, thanks to a lot of you;) ]

Radiohead have difficulties finding venue in Illinois
On Chicago radio program Soundopinions (93.1 WXRT 3 June 2003) Greg Kot (Chicago Tribune) and Jim DeRogatis (Chicago Sun-Times) explained that Radiohead was trying to book a concert at Hutchinson Field in Grant Park like the one given in 2001. Unfortunately the City of Chicago wont grant a permit (no reason given) and so Radiohead is checking out other venues like Alpine Valley in East Troy, WI (20 miles from IL boarder) for a late Aug. concert. [thanks AJ]

The band who stole the world
Panic attacks, terror alerts, a looming darkness on the horizon, and everything you thought you knew about life slowly fracturing and coming undone — this could quite possibly be the end of the world. Or it could just mean that Radiohead is finally back. CMJ have a Radiohead feature online at CMJ.com, which includes an interview with Phil.
