BBC PULL 'THERE THERE' FROM TV LICENCE AD

The BBC has pulled a Radiohead track from a TV licence campaign, following complaints from one of the band's managers. The ad, which promotes the use of direct debit payments for TV licences, will continue to be aired but with alternative backing music. Radiohead are said to be angered that the track, There There, from their recent Hail to the Thief album, was used without permission as part of an advertising campaign.

The band's record company, Parlophone, which is a subsidiary of EMI, has referred the matter to its legal department, believing that the BBC has "overstepped the mark". "We feel and Radiohead feel that they [the BBC] have overstepped the mark," a Parlophone spokeswoman said. "Therefore we are doing something about it - our legal department are on to it. Other people have asked to use the track and we have said no, and now they are saying we have let the BBC use it and we haven't," she added.

"Radiohead are not interested in that kind of advertising, it's not something they would OK." The BBC denied it had done anything wrong, arguing that it had used the music in accordance with agreements made with the British phonographic industry. "We are confident the use of the music in the trail did not contravene any existing agreements or permissions of use, though we have made the decision to use alternative music for future airing of the trail, to reflect reported concerns from one of the band's managers," a TV licensing spokesman said.

The new trail has been running for only a week and is part of a general campaign to promote the variety of ways in which people can pay the £116 fee. [from the guardian]

Copy protection... sucks

As you all know the lastes Radiohead album, 'Hail to the Thief' is Copy Controlled. More and more CDs are copy controlled the days. If you use an mp3 player, or if you listen to your CDs on your computer or even if you listen to them on certain hifis, copy protection will mean you will have increasingly more problems when attempting to listen to music on the device of your choice. Copy protection in its current guise is basically intentional data corruption and as a result its effectiveness is haphazard to say the least, with the innocent music buyer left to bear the brunt while the bad guys always find a way round it.

Copyprotectionsucks.co.uk concerns the alarming rise of audio CD copy protection, designed to deter illegal copying and sharing of copyrighted work, but which is having grave consequences for the way we listen to music. It should be pointed out that copyprotectionsucks.co.uk does not support the illegal copying or sharing of copyrighted work; but it does support the right to listen to music...

Wayne Coyne: 'Let's record with Radiohead'

Flaming Lips singer Wayne Coyne wants the band to record new music with Radiohead. The bands have long been mutual admirers of each other's work. The Lips played the Pyramid Stage immediately before Radiohead at Glastonbury last month (June 28) and are now strongly tipped to support Thom Yorke and co. on their forthcoming US tour.

Coyne admitted: "We're talking about doing a couple of things. I know there is a sort of experimental TV show that comes out of Chicago that we're both scheduled to do. The show typically pairs people together of the same ilk. They've been wanting to get us up there for a while, but they haven't found anybody that seemed worthy of a show.

"Radiohead are talking about doing it, so we could start there around about the middle of September." He added: "If I could get my way, we'd get right in there and do something with them. If we're in the same room for a couple of hours with a lot of musical gear lying around, I'd say ‘Let's try something’." [from nme, thanks tiffany]

Soundstage are after Radiohead

Soundstage, the PBS series that put viewers in the front row of concerts by artists ranging from Bob Dylan to the Temptations, is back on television after being muscled out 18 years ago by the music video. Those behind the series hope its raw approach -- no glitz, just music -- appeals to those put off by the record industry's focus on glamour.

The hourlong shows are taped in front of a live audience at the WTTW-TV studios in Chicago. The Public Broadcasting Service affiliate, which also produced the original series, keeps editing to a minimum. Performers are encouraged to talk with the audience, and if artists make mistakes, the cameras capture it all.

With the first season in the can, WTTW and partner HD Ready, a suburban video company, are planning for a second. Singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow will be taping next week, Thomas said. Randy King, WTTW executive television producer, said the station is working to schedule groups such as Coldplay, A Tribe Called Quest and Radiohead. [from canoe, thanks Sanjay]
