CHRIS O'RILEY: TRUE LOVE WAITS II IN SPRING
There's an interview at KnoxNews.com with Christopher O'Riley. The pianist began playing Radiohead during his weekly solo spot on "From the Top," a nationally syndicated showcase for exceptional pre-college age classical musicians. "That generated a fair amount of enthusiasm and curiosity," he says. Enough to suggest an all-Radiohead CD might find an audience. Which it did, big time. The CD, released this year, sold more copies in its first week than O'Riley's other 10 albums have sold to date, combined. His other recordings are mostly classical works and original compositions. The pianist will record a follow-up album of Radiohead tunes this winter, for spring release. "It's just music I love and covet and want to play in any way I can," he says. "I think of it really in the same way I do all the classical repertoire I play," O'Riley says. "I tend to think of great music as great music, regardless of the genre." [read it in full]

THOM YORKE INTRODUCING...JAMES BROWN
Radiohead attended the James Brown concert at the Hollywood Bowl, the night after they played two sold out nights themselves. The band was backstage for a brief minute, then Colin, Jonny and Phil went to their seats, and Thom and Ed stayed backstage until after Thom made his cameo on stage, introducing... JAMES BROWN! Thom Yorke said something to the extent of “Hello, my name is Thom Yorke. I’m in the band Radiohead who performed here last night. Somehow I have the pleasure of introducing James (pause) Brown”. Radiohead were wisked away in their limo before the show ended. [thanks Phil & Stev]

2ND NIGHT AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL
Radiohead's second night at Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles featured Creep and an acoustic Nude/Big Ideas. Airbag was dedicated to the Chili Peppers. Full setlist and reviews are available in the gigography.
Hollywood Reporter has a review of the first gig at the Hollywood Bowl: "Bottom line: Powerful, yet cold and distant, Radiohead remains curious but erratic."
MTV has a review as well: "To those unfamiliar with what is arguably the most celebrated rock band of the last 10 years, the scene Thursday night at the Hollywood Bowl probably looked a little strange.
On a giant eggshell of a stage, a small man frolicked around, wiggling his limbs like spaghetti noodles and mumbling things like "two and two always makes up five." But to music fans who take their tunes smothered in originality, it was the prime rib of rock concerts." [read it in full]
And a review from the Virginmegamagazine.com: "The relevance of Radiohead's songs resonated by reflecting the anxiety of the current political and cultural atmosphere. The pairing of “2 + 2 = 5” and “Lucky” left goose bumps, not only because of the musical intensity, but also the lyrical content. When Yorke screamed the lines “you are not paying attention” and “hail to the thief” in “2 + 2 = 5,” the political anger felt as palpable as the sardonic humor when Yorke sang, “the head of state has called for me by name” in “Lucky.” Yorke even made a crack before "Myxamatosis" about the California recall election, perhaps a nod to the chaotic debate that took place just the night before." RADIOHEAD TRIES TO END THE CONFUSION WITH 'THIEF'
Radiohead guitarist Johnny Greenwood knows exactly when and where the band's creative process got confused. "I was in so many dance-record shops, seeing people listen to two seconds of all these records and then choosing them on that basis," he said in the Denver Post, recalling a time prior to Radiohead's North American tour.
"That started to get to me, judging five minutes of music on the quality of the sound and the rhythm that's in them. I found myself doing it, walking up to the turntable and plowing through a pile of vinyl. I started to get the fear that Radiohead was just going to go down the route of generating new sounds for the sake of it, and thereby lose something musical."
Radiohead's recording process was intentionally short when the group made Hail to the Thief. Most of the record was cut in 2 1/2 weeks in Los Angeles with longtime producer Nigel Godrich. "It was spontaneous when the tape was rolling, but that's to ignore the three months of daily rehearsals that we recorded and listened to at home every night. There was still a process of writing and preparing," Greenwood explained. Radiohead devotees have devoured the lyric sheet, as Yorke's wail obscures his edgy Orwell-lite themes on routine, paranoia and alienation. The title of Hail to the Thief, in honor of George W. Bush's election, suggests virulent commentary, but the record's politics are deliberately murky.
No longer feeling the pressure of being the cherished pioneers of modern rock, Radiohead is finally at ease allowing more focus on compositions that move and build on themselves, not just fantastic textures and effects.
"It's a balance, trying to temper my enthusiasm for finding new sounds and colors and keep the other hand on musical ideas," Greenwood said. "We're finally appreciating what it is to be in a group of five people. We're all still obsessed with doing this. None of us has gotten into collecting cars or supermodels or whatever the traditional distractions are. You wake up and realize how lucky you are to have that. It sounds hokey, but we aren't bored yet. We're thankful for that." [full article]

PRESS REVIEWS SHORELINE AMPHITHEATRE SHOW
The house band of the uneasy new millennium filled the Shoreline Amphitheatre Tuesday with 20,000 enraptured souls, collectively mesmerized by what is perhaps the least likely sound in commercial pop music. Confounding the oddsmakers, Radiohead has made a cash cow of its falsetto angst, its feedback squalls and off-kilter lullabies. [full review at sfgate.com]
Radiohead is not bulletproof. The band does have one weakness. Luckily, they got that sole hole in the armor out of the way first on Tuesday evening at the Shoreline Amphitheatre. Many fawning critics would have you believe the band behind 1997's revered "OK Computer" is actually flawless. Most passionate fans would contest that there simply isn't anything the band doesn't do well. But it's simply not true. There is one area where the band doesn't excel: math. [full review at timesstar.com]
There are so many reasons why Radiohead is considered one of the world's greatest rock bands. It expresses more courage to go outside industry borders than any 21st century band should, considering the pressure to produce hits for impatient recording labels these days. Yet Radiohead does virtually anything it wants musically, from writing hits to producing epic and emotional masterpieces in sonic experimentation that rely on few rules. Its studio work is legendary, inspiring respect from even those who don't like it or admit they simply can't understand it. But if a band can't pull most of that off live, the title is empty. MICHAEL STIPE ON THAT VANCOUVER WEEKEND
Michael Stipe posted two pictures and a review of the Vancouver weekend, where Michael Stipe joined Radiohead and Thom Yorke at the REM show.
The next shots are from the vanbc show, we did a good job we practically didnít have a choice because a] radiohead were playing the next night; and b] practically everyone ive had a substantive conversation with in the past 10 months was there to see the show. so we had to be great. It was ragged and unexpected as first couple and last couple shows always are, we had a great time onstage I think I speak for everyone, and we got among other things blessed by a flyover by canadian geese and a nice view of mars looking very close to the earth. All very cool. The first shot is me and thom yorke happy to see each other after a longish absence [please go to radiohead.com to see what he and his band have been busying themselves with] and grinning like fools. He had on a great tee shirt. Thom got up with us to do 'ebow the letter' which is really my favorite song to sing, but it doesnít come often, its more of a recitation but straight from the gut and I still donít know why it moves me so much but it does. One of the few actual biographic songs and it wasnít even written as a song. We were intense and then dancing and being foolish and it was exactly great and liberating and beautiful, thoms energy for me matches peter and mikes in terms of full circle inspiring me into head spin. Thatís the great part of creating things and then sending them out there. Plus the audience went apeshit when he walked onstage. He did 'end of the world' with us too and that was a big shoutout and fun and felt like a fist in the air and a grin. Not bad for a first night. Like thatís not enough we then got to see rhead the next night at the same venue and I tell you they were astonishing and powerful and mindblowing, peter mike and I and my family and peters family and all our friends and the rhead crew friends on the side of stage and then I snuck around to front of house with the house of venus guys and todd the crusher so I could see it like a fan and it was just beautiful. They invited me up to sing 'karma police' and I was really honored because NOBODY gets up with tha radiohead. I did a good job on the chorus and danced around a little. The best part of the show for me, favorites aside, was 'a wolf at the door' which was like watching a caterpillar chrysalis in varispeed and human form right before your eyes. Better than 'mimic' and I really like that movie, especially norman being ripped apart by a giant bug.

UH-OH, HE SAID THE F-WORD!
Just noticed this site, Plugged In, which is "a Focus on the Family publication designed to help equip parents, youth leaders, ministers and teens with the essential tools that will enable them to understand, navigate and impact the culture in which they live."
Both 'Kid A' and 'Hail to the Thief' are reviewed. Here's some of the objectional content of 'Hail To The Thief' according to 'Plugged In': "Because this disc is essentially a poetic stream of consciousness, several lines could be interpreted in a negative way. Angry about a relationship gone sour, lead singer Thomas Yorke says, “I will eat you all alive” (“Where I End and You Begin”). He says “With my X-ray eyes I strip you naked” (“A Wolf at the Door”) and warns somberly, “It is now the witching hour/Murderers, you’re murderers ... They will suck you down” (“The Gloaming”). You might expect a vicious thunderclap to interrupt the eerie “We Suck Young Blood” which asks, “Are you hungry?/Are you sick? ... Are you strung up by your wrists? ... We want sweet meats/We want young blood/We suck young blood.” More blatantly problematic are uses of the f-word on “A Wolf at the Door” and “Myxomatosis.” " Here's more.
