TRAVIS FED UP PLAYING 2ND FIDDLE TO RADIOHEAD

Here is a snippet of a recent interview with Travis from this week's Boston Globe: Q. You've worked with A-list producers, among them Steve Lillywhite and Nigel Godrich. Why did you decide to produce the new album by yourselves? A. To be honest I was fed up playing second fiddle to Radiohead. We're like Nigel's part-time lover. He was so frazzled after ``Kid A,'' we were his therapists after those sessions. He's one of my best mates, but I'm so happy we did it this way. I think he missed us, though. I played some of it for him in the car when we were recording, and he turned around and said, `` Why weren't you writing like this when you were with me?'' [thanks Nate]

NIGEL GODRICH TO PRODUCE NEW BETA BAND ALBUM

The Beta Band have revealed that Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich will work on their new album. The Beta Band have supported Radiohead on their North American tour in 2001. In a message posted on the band's website, singer Steve Mason explained that the band are happy with the results. "He's (Godrich) working at Mayfair Studios in London. Me and Rich (Greentree, bass) went down at the weekend to see what he's doing to our LP and its all good! "Looks like 12 tracks will go on the record out of the 17 we recorded," he explained. "Mixing will be done in two weeks and the LP will be out in February." [from nme]

SIMON PUMMELL ON JONNY'S BODYSONG

Last night on Finnish TV-show 'Sessions', 'Bodysong' director Simon Pummell was interviewed. Talking about Jonny's work on the soundtrack, he said that he wanted a big star to do the soundtrack, because the film itself doesn't have any real stars. Simon said he had sent it to Radiohead because he needed the kind of depth to the music, that Radiohead could provide. When they had collected a CD-ROM of the material they had shot so far, he sent it to Radiohead's management and it turned out Jonny decided to do the soundtrack on his own. The director and Jonny kept sending rough ideas to eachother and, like a dialog, processed both film footage and the music. As a result the music is very much attached to the images on screen, according to Simon Pummell. [thanks Jonne]

EISLEY ON RADIOHEAD

There's an interview with Eisley at MTV.com with a lot of Radiohead content. Here are some bits: All of the DuPree kids really connected with their parents' record collection, but it was when then-14-year-old Chauntelle stumbled across Radiohead's OK Computer that they became truly inspired. "The thing that stuck out to me was the guitar stuff," she said. "They were just so off-the-wall. I hadn't heard anything like it before." There's perhaps only one thing Boyd and Kim DuPree didn't prepare their children for — and that's a (seemingly inevitable) run-in with their ultimate musical heroes.

"We always have these fun conversations about what we would say [if we met Radiohead]," Weston said. "We think about it a lot actually," Sheri said. "We're pretty obsessed with Radiohead."

"We had some friends that ran into them and like, choked, and didn't say anything," Weston said. "What would you say? Obviously it's not like you are going to be doing Thom Yorke any good ... so we might as well just say whatever to make ourselves feel better."

IN BRIEF

Video artist Doug Aitken makes videos that tap into a mood of mental precariousness and information-age alienation. Watching his mesmerising new show at Victoria Miro, I was put in mind of the band Radiohead, and in particular Radiohead's recent dalliances with electronic music on the albums Kid A and Amnesiac. TINY MIX TAPES REVIEW BODYSONG

Surprise surprise! Kid A and Amnesiac were mainly Jonny Greenwood’s albums. Getting what and how much of a role Jonny plays in Radiohead (which is probably the primary reason anyone is listening to this album) out of the way, allow me to address Bodysong itself. Being that it’s a soundtrack, at times it doesn’t play as well as one might hope, but that’s hardly a reasonable gripe. There's a favorable review of Jonny Greenwood's Bodysong. The rest of the review is at www.tinymixtapes.com.

A new review of the Merce Cunningham dance (with Radiohead and Sigur Ros) is reviewed in the New Yorker. Have a read.

RADIOHEAD SUCKS

"Radiohead, perpetual media darlings and so-called "greatest rock band in the world." Luckily, I’m here to dispel that myth. They suck. They suck like the wind." Want more? Check SomethingAwful.com.

THOM YORKE ON FUTURE RELEASES: "EPS ARE MORE LIKELY"

During abackstage interview with The Associated Press, Thom Yorke wriggled with delight as he explained that the band has just fulfilled its contract with Parlophone, a division of EMI Records. "It's always been album, album, album," he says, adding that he believes the music business will be forced to change because the way people listen to music is changing. "Things like iTunes and people splitting up tracks," he says. "I kind of think that's good. I listen to music on random all the time."

With the freedom to do anything, Yorke says he's unsure what the band will try next although it's unlikely to pound out another album. EPs are more likely.

"The whole thing's in their hands. I think it's a band that's always going to test the limits and try new things," says Rob Gordon, vice president of global marketing at EMI, who added he's confident the band's relationship with his label will continue. [read it in full]

THE STREETS ON RADIOHEAD

Mike Skinner (aka the streets) mentions radiohead in an interview to the NY Times: "Everything I rap about is really just an example of me talking about myself,'' he says. ''I mean, I could talk about this tape recorder, but I'd really just be talking about my perception of what it is. I've never been interested in the idea of someone being able to get anything they want out of a song. My sister, she thinks that you should be able to find your own meanings in songs. She likes Radiohead. I'm not like that. All that 'I'm just a fish in the sea, I'm so lonely' -- that's kind of rubbish. There is nothing on my record that you can't understand literally.'' MOBY PLAYS EVERYTHING IN ITS RIGHT PLACE

From Wired: "Moby scored SonicVision, the new multimedia show at the Hayden Planetarium in New York. "I'm a geek who grew up obsessed with outer space," says Moby. "The only problem was, I wasn't bright enough to be a scientist." His hit "We Are All Made of Stars," along with tunes by Radiohead, Stereolab, the Flaming Lips, and others, accompany the 35-minute animated movie that takes visitors through an observatory's ceiling and into an alien dance party. Seven projectors beam the film onto the Hayden's 68-foot-tall dome while 23 speakers provide a visceral kick. PLAYLIST: Boards of Canada / "Julie and Candy", David Bowie / "Heroes", The Flaming Lips / "Do You Realize?", Moby / "Into the Blue" and "We Are All Made of Stars", Queens of the Stone Age / "First It Giveth" Radiohead / "Everything in Its Right Place", Stereolab / "Metronomic Underground", U2 / "Elevation" [thanks Reena]

RADIOHEAD & SIGUR ROS 'SPLIT SIDES'

Radiohead performed at the 'Split Sides' world premiere in New York last night. Radiohead appeared at the Brooklyn Academy of Music to perform music along with the ballet of Merce Cunningham. There are several reviews of the show available in the gigography as well as at Billboard.com and Yahoo.com.

The "Split Sides" premiere received extensive coverage in the NY Times arts section today, including a picture of Radiohead at a dress rehearsal. There were two articles about the show -- one a review, and one more about the music.

The show was also reviewed by Clive Barnes in the NY Post; he called "Split Sides" "a bull's-eye . . . a honey of a work, one of [Cunningham's] best ever." But he was mainly complimenting the choreography and dancing; he called the music "wispy, agreeable alt-rock."

NEW YORK TIMES FEATURE ON SPLIT SIDES

There's a feature in New York Times on Merce Cunningham's dance Split Sides, will have its world premiere at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York, running Tuesday through Saturday.

Jonny Greenwood was also interviewed. Some bits and pieces: Radiohead has never seen the troupe perform live, though the band has seen a few videotaped recordings of past performances. "There's an exciting spirit about it all," said Jonny Greenwood, who plays guitar for Radiohead. "No one is sure what to expect."

Radiohead has taken a different tack, leaving some room for improvisation in the score, so they can respond to what is happening onstage, though it is unclear how much they will be able to see from the orchestra pit. They wanted to use radios, but they aren't sure what the reception will be like inside the theater, and they haven't yet added any vocals.

"We're making different music for this project than we ever have," Mr. Greenwood said. "It's a very different thing: you're backing something up." Creating a 20-minute piece of music was a creative challenge. "We work in five-minute bursts," Mr. Greenwood said. "It's like suddenly getting a much bigger canvas and having to work with it and not panic."

"We're by turns anxious and optimistic about it," he added. "I know that Mr. Cunningham seems to be very keen on happy accidents. I hope it's a happy one." At this point, neither band plans to record the music. [read it in full]

SPIN WITH A GRIN UPDATED

Spin with a grin is updated with answers to some of your questions. It seems that Colin answered two questions. One from Matthew Cand on composing his basslines and Andy Pisanu asked about what to do with 'Big Ideas': "I think you'd get a different answer from each person....I loved the one from New York that we did at radio city music hall about six years ago. I like the al green shuffle to it, that chamber soul intimacy to the beautiful melody, all that rising and falling through the song. I hope we do record it. Thom does play it when something breaks on stage; very fine, better than party ballon animals." [thanks Jedrzej]

JICKS TOUR DIARY

There's a tour diary online of Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks touring with Radiohead: "I almost feel like I don't even need to do more than one update during this tour, 'cuz I could write forever just about the first night, but I'll try. O.K., where to begin. We, the Jicks, are traveling in one 15-seat passenger van. Radiohead are traveling in four tour busses and five 18-wheel trucks. Our crew is Gail, our guitar tech, and Jason, our tour manager/FOH sound guy. Radiohead's crew fills the first two pages of their tour book. And Thom Yorke's cell phone isn't listed in there, so don't even ask." [read it in full, thanks michael]

IT'S RADIODEAD

Everyone loves the British "art-rock" band Radiohead. Except maybe your co-worker. The person sitting next to you on the subway. Your best friend. And 23-year-old Olenka Denysenko of Manhattan - who definitely won't be catching the band tonight and tomorrow at Madison Square Garden.
"I borrowed one of their albums from a friend when I was on a long bus trip," she recalls. "It was sleepy, mellow and a downer - I was about to slit my wrists." Denysenko is among the growing number of music buffs who commit the alt-rock equivalent of sacrilege: admitting they don't like Radiohead.

TOP 40 BANDS IN BRITAIN TODAY

Radiohead were voted best band in the world today by the readers of Q, but the Guardian has made a list of the Top 40 Bands in Britain. Radiohead ended up at number 2, just after the Libertines. Here's what they had to say: "The sight of 100,000 people twitching wildly to Idioteque at Glastonbury this year was testament to how far Radiohead have come. After OK Computer launched a wave of hyperbole big enough to drown them, the relatively obtuse Kid A seemed like a retreat to higher ground - but it only increased its creators' mystique. Radiohead have become emblematic of all that a world-class rock band can be, balancing success with integrity, size with intimacy, and always finding a way to escape the long shadow of their prior achievements. Helmed by Thom Yorke, the quintessential anti-star, they become more unique and valuable with each passing year. Sound:19, Songs:17, Gigs:20
Style:13, Attitude:19, Total: 88" [thanks monkey chops, full list]

SUPERGRASS CANCEL NEW YORK SHOWS SUPPORT

Due to personal reasons Supergrass have cancelled their support for Radiohead's shows at the Madison Square Garden in New York on October 9th and 10th. Thom Yorke said in Atlanta last night: "We've got to thank Supergrass because um...they were going to play Madison Square Garden with us but they can't, so we got to find somebody to support us, so if you know anybody who's interested."

Update: Radiohead have asked Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks to do the 2 New York shows.

YEAH, WHAT HE SAID!

If you access the secret website when you buy Rufus Wainwright's new cd "Want One" you can hear a track by track commentary. For the track "Go or Go Ahead" Rufus has this to say mid-track: "I'm very happy with the sort of rock feel of this -- some people say it sounds a little like Radiohead, which is a big compliment I like the fact that you can understand the the words though, too (laughs) I do love Radiohead, they're incredible... ". Of course, we all know that Rufus saw Radiohead at Field Day and said it was the most impressive concert he'd ever seen

And in an interview with Jack Black (9-26-03) on IGN.com, Jack Black was asked what he is listening to in the car: "I really like Queens of the Stone Age. And, the obvious, The White Stripes, I love Elephant. Radiohead, of course. I love Radiohead. Hail to the Thief... excellent, excellent record. I also like, The Strokes. I'm lookin' forward to hearin' the new Strokes record. There's not very much of a chance that it's gonna be as good as their first one, but if it is as good as their first one, then forget it. They're The Beatles."

A review of the Unicorns at Pitchfork mentioned some Radiohead body parts: "It's a marching band desending out of Thom Yorke's vagina, doused in amniotic fluid and vodka, traveling to Ian Curtis' funeral."

Jonny Greenwood was on the official board last night. Someone asked what the message to the Q Awards read. Jonny: "that would be interesting to know.... well, they wrote it not us. we didn't send anything this time....

On the current North American tour, Jonny said: "It's been good - getting tired now, but we've
defintely played our bes shows in america on this tour....that's such a pretty venue in Wisconsin - shame the residents only allow thre shows a year there. When asked how they travel Jonny said: "We have a bus a cross between a velour motel and a submarine. I suppose real bands have planes - but it's quite comforting falling asleep on a moving bus, to the sound of an engine. Big Lebowski in the back lounge anyone " [thanks Matthew]

ED O'BRIEN INTERVIEW AT TCPALM

There's an interview with Ed O'Brien at TCPalm.com:

We're not spokespeople, we're musicians," said guitarist Ed O'Brien in a telephone interview, expressing audible disdain at the mere idea. "I love the lyrics on this album. I like the sentiment and the feel of them." Still, he reiterates, "We're not spokespeople, we're just musicians."
S
o how is a Radiohead album made? According to O'Brien, it's a "communal affair. . . . Thom presents you with fairly stripped-down versions of songs, then you start writing things. (The credit) always ends up referring to Thom, but it's definitely a collaboration. It's inclusive. You can put in as much as you want to put in. You throw things into the pot: Some stay, some don't."

O'Brien's initial interest in the guitar wasn't "a sound thing, it was a visual thing." In 1978, he saw a poster featuring members of the band The Jam, dressed in black suits and ties playing their instruments in midjump. "There was something about the energy and they looked amazing. I thought, 'I want to do that, I want to go there.'"

And he has been there and done that. This kind of exposure has placed the band on the cover of nearly every major music magazine in the world, although O'Brien only recognizes a general "acknowledgment of what you do around the world. We're not aware of fame itself, we're not that kind of band. I don't read the press, I don't watch endless music TV. It doesn't impact my life."

Now, the band is looking forward to playing its "own gigs" in its first major U.S. tour in nearly two years.

"It's a privilege to play here. We have an amazing audience out here. We're given lots of encouragement, which gives us a license to push things musically," O'Brien said. "We're going to play around with the setlist. It should be quite fun. . . . I'm happy to play most of our songs as long as we keep moving, keep it fresh." [read it in full]
