Thom Yorke feare US backlash over anti-Bush views
Radiohead were apprehensive about touring the US after expressing his views about US President George Bush. The band have spent much of the autumn on tour in America supporting their current album ‘Hail To The Thief’. Thom said that because of his public anti-war stance and the perceived anti-Bush album title, the band feared some kind of backlash.
"We were sort of worried about the reaction to what we had been saying when we went over there," Thom told NME.COM. "Colin (Greenwood, bassist), whose wife is American, didn’t see a problem at all. It turned out that he was right, when you met people face to face the resistance, disgust and dismay was obvious."
Thom said that some of the band’s older songs have taken on new meanings. He continued: "When we played ‘No Surprises’ a huge cheer would go up every night over the line ‘Bring down the government / They don't speak for us..’. Although in Houston, Texas it was a little err...muted shall we say." [from nme.com]

Radiohead at Earl's Court
Radiohead played their first of two shows in London last night. Check the gigography for a setlists and reviews for the show at Earl's Court. NME reviewed the show as well: "[Thom] introduced the track 'You And Whose Army', which is about Blair, by complaining about last week's state visit by US President George W Bush to London, before saying: "These are the kind of faces Tony Blair pulls when Bush comes to visit" - the giant screens at the side of the stage then showing a close-up of Yorke's impersonation - involving lots of eyebrow movement - as he sang the song." full story here.
Tonight's gig, again from Earl's Court, will be broadcast live by XFM.
A lot of pictures from the Manchester show are now available in the gigography.

'Guardian' reviews Manchester show
The Guardian reviewed the Manchester show: "Most bands use a pre-show backing tape to get the audience in the mood - a bit of aural scene-setting. In this, as in everything else, Radiohead defy expectations. At 9 o'clock sharp, the summery calypso tape cuts into noisy electronic clatter, the house lights plunge like a wartime blackout and suddenly we are in their presence. Thom Yorke and drummer Phil Selway are wearing expensive-looking suits; Jonny Greenwood and Ed O'Brien, both without their guitars, are viciously beating a couple of drums." . 'OK COMPUTER #1 ALBUM OF THE 90'S'
Pitchforkmedia.com named OK Computer the #1 album of the 90's. The Bends ended up at the 15th in their top 100 of the 90's: "Modern thinking has led to debates and revisionism over the effect of tracks like "Electioneering" and "Fitter Happier" on OK Computer's importance, as if removing "Turd on the Run" and "Pet Sounds" would somehow make Exile on Main Street and Pet Sounds five-and-a-half-star albums. What's interesting in the case of "Electioneering" is that, at the time, it stood as the one track most similar to the beautiful guitar rackets of "Just", "Creep", and "My Iron Lung". The band even performed the song on The Tonight Show upon the album's release. Beyond its political intent, the song could have fit easily on Radiohead's two previous albums." Read more at Pitchfork. IN BRIEF
Spin named "Hail To The Thief" the 10th best album of the year out of 40 albums. #1 was The White Stripes.
The first few bars of "Street Spirit" were played on Top Gear last night (Sunday 23rd) as a Toyota pickup truck was pulled out of the sea, while "2+2=5" was played on the BBC's Big Read on Saturday night when Jo Brand talked about 1984 by George Orwell.
At the home games of the Vancouver Canucks (local NHL hockey team), before the players take the ice, the house lights are dimmed and get treated to the tunes of Radiohead's "The National Anthem."
Eonline.com is currently conducting an online poll as to which band is a lock for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. You can vote for Radiohead.

TELEGRAPH REVIEWS MANCHESTER SHOW
There's a review of the Manchester show in the Telegraph, which is available at Telegraph.co.uk: "In Radiohead's brave new world, hitherto unexplored musical elements such as repetition and incrementalism have replaced the old paradigms. Sometimes, as on the sensational, clattering Sit Down, Stand Up, from this year's Hail to the Thief album, the effect was purely visceral; sometimes, it was deeply emotional, such as on the opening song, There There, with its portentous drum pattern and burgeoning guitars. I've heard them play it three times this year, and each time it has brought tears to my eyes." [read it in full at telegraph.co.uk]

THOM YORKE & HOWARD ZINN INTERVIEW
Howard Zinn and Thom Yorke have never done lunch, waved to each other along the red carpet, or even had a conversation. But what if they did? We took the recent release of Howard Zinn's new Seven Stories Press book, "Artists in Times of War," as an opportunity to find out what would happen if these two very different people were to sound off on the role of artists in politics. After all, who better for this dialogue than Radiohead's Thom Yorke?
One question and answer from the interview with Howard Zinn and Thom Yorke: Is there a book or piece of art, maybe a song, that was the first thing to make you realize something revolutionary that you wouldn't have on your own? Yorke: Everything Lennon was getting into trouble for during the '70s. The "war is over" idea. In college, I was absolutely obsessed with that antagonistic slogan. Of all the things he did outside of music, that was the most amazing thing. I thought it was the fucking bravest thing, because it was straight to the point. Also, the music around that time, the protest songs around then, just had this sense of danger coming out of the Vietnam period. A whole generation of people waking up in the '70s, going, "Hang on a minute, this ain't right."

THOM PERFORMS 'FOLLOW ME AROUND' ON BBC RADIO 1
Thom and Ed were on BBC Radio 1's 'Mark & Lard' for an interview. Thom performed 'Follow me around' on acoustic guitar. Thom: "It's been kicking around since the heady days of OK Computer. I don't know exactly what to do with it" The band have answered questions from fans and Mark & Lard. They talked about the venue in Arnhem, their current favourite records (Ed: Kings of Leon, Thom: British Sea Power), Outkast's 'Hey Ya?' (Thom: "It's great, it should be number one across the world"), Their performances at the Jonathan Ross show & Letterman. Street Spirit being covered by the Darkness (Ed likes it) and Oakenfold (Ed: "Oh dear"). Eurovision (They won't do it, because they think they probably won't make it through the national qualifying rounds). Mark & Lard did a sketch called 'Thom Yorke's schoolday's.
For those who missed 'Follow Me Around', I've uploaded the song (mp3) to the yahoogroups folder for all the members of the 'atease announce list'.

But since these guys are so cool, let's give them the benefit of the doubt: their great sound, thoughtful lyrics and overpowering stage presence must make many women swoon over them."

THOM YORKE LEADS PROTEST OVER BUSH VISIT
Thom Yorke is spearheading a growing chorus of protest aimed at US President Gearge Bush’s visit to the UK – branding him and Tony Blair "liars".
Bush and a massive entourage came to London this week (November 18) for a rare state visit. Even before he arrived the trip provoked fury, with reports that US security officials wanted to create a three mile ‘exclusion zone’ around him, effectively shutting down central London and stopping legitimate protesters from getting anywhere near the President.
Angry at what he sees as using the "threat of terrorism to suppress whatever they choose", Thom Yorke e-mailed NME last week, urging people to protest against the visit.
When asked why he’d chosen to speak out, Thom told NME: "To make Blair squirm over his decision to take us into a illegitimate war (In Iraq) and follow this religious lunatic (Bush) toward a dangerous future for the whole planet.
"Both of these men are liars. We have right to call them such, they are putting our children’s future in jeopardy. They are not controlling the terrorist threat, they are escalating it. Blair will not be allowed off the hook by his pathetic pleading for us to ‘move on’, neither shall Bush."
Thom continued: "(The visit) will be heavily staged I think. I expect they will use the threat of terrorism to suppress whatever they choose, intimidate and arrest whoever they wish. The majority of British people were against this war, and Bush's visit will just taint Blair even further."
While in the UK Bush will be staying in Buckingham Palace. Yorke urged the Royal Family to "do something useful" and protest too. He continued: "This is a royal invitation isn't it? How about one of the little heirs to throne doing something useful with their lives and speaking out? Refusing to shake hands for example? As we are still awaiting the results of the Hutton Inquiry I think now is a good time to remind Blair that he's on very very very very very very very very thin ice." RADIOHEAD IN ARNHEM
Radiohead played at the Gelredome in Arnhem, the Netherlands last night. The band played a great set with excellent versions of 'I Will' and 'Exit Music'. The show was the last one, before the band returns to England for a UK tour, which was probably the reason for an extra song in the second encore. Thom: "If you're not doing anything tomorrow, you can come to London if you like", inviting everyone to join the Bush protests today.
The Dutch also had a football match to play against Scotland (a play off match for Euro 2004). Jonny's radio was tuned in to Radio 1, which covered the match. Flashes from the match just during 'Climbing up the walls' and 'The National Anthem' were accepted with loud cheers. Thom: "That doesn't sound like a football match..." Just before the second encore Ed announced the final score: "Scotland: 0, Holland: 6".

HOTPRESS REVIEWS 2+2=5
With Radiohead, it’s all very simple…they rarely get it wrong. Having presumably taken a leaf out of touring buddy Four Tet’s book, the single opens with a jarring electro/feedback turn before settling into the usual groove of innovative and articulate guitar trickery, and affecting, languid, emotional outpourings. While the set up is definitely a familiar one, expect this short sharp shock of a song to stand out in the band’s overall canon for years to come. [from hotpress, thanks alex]

'THIS MESS WE'RE IN' IN POP'S 50 BEST DUETS
In last week's 'Arts + Books' section of The Daily Telegraph (UK, Saturday, 8th November 2003), in Pop's 50 Best Duets Ever, Number 48 was PJ Harvey and Thom Yorke - This Mess We're In (2000). The short passage reads, "Harvey apparently wrote this song, for her album Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea, with Radiohead's singer in mind. Her thrummy Fender guitar chugs along on the back of a deadpan rhythm; over the top of this floats Yorke's ethereal voice, singing of a strange fleeting encounter with a woman. Yorke does most of the singing, with Harvey joining him on the refrain, and speaking rather than singing on the last verse. The song builds inexorably, chillingly, to its bleak conclusion.
KEY MOMENT: The final verse, when Harvey speaks the words that Yorke is about to sing; the contrast between words drily spoken and hauntingly sung is compelling." [Number 1 was Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra’s ‘Some Velvet Morning’ (1968).] [thanks Tom]

RADIOHEAD ON SETLISTS, IPODS AND FILE SHARING
Ed, Colin & Thom were interviewed on MTV2's 'Subterranean' last night. A selection of seven videos were played from 'Stop Whispering' to 'Go To Sleep'. Some highlights from the interview:
- Ed realized he and the rest of the band haven't appeareed in a video since High & Dry except for the ill-fated making of Let Down
-Thom explained that at the end of the recent European leg of the HTTT tour the crew asked him when he was gonna change the set list because they were so bored by it. Thom said he now changes it more often in fear of the crew.
-Colin said on his iPod are Cody Chestnut and the new Outkast. Thom added that Outkast's single "Hey Yeah" is the song of the year hands down by a long shot.
-Thom explained song swapping on the internet doesn't explain recent record sales decline. He says the record companies are using it as an excuse when in fact nobody wants to buy the crappy music out today. He also said that indie record stores are getting price gouged by the larger chains so they can't survive. also, the music buying experience in large stores is terrible, so it's no wonder customers are fed up and resort to file swapping. Thom ended the rant buy saying the record companpanies felt free to call their customers crooks and blame the parents while at the same time it was fine that huge companies like Clear Channel can own the whole fucking country and the whole music scene. BODYSONG N-A RELEASE: FEBRUARY 24TH
Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood will see his score for the U.K. documentary "Bodysong" released Feb. 24 in North America via Capitol. The album was released late last month via Parlophone internationally. The film, which opens Dec. 5 in the U.K., was named best British documentary last week at the British Independent Film Awards. "Most film score writing demands discipline," Greenwood said this summer. "You have to use click-tracks, and provide music that makes its point in, say, 20 seconds -- and even leaves spaces for dialogue. This wasn't true with 'Bodysong,' which meant I could let musicians play at tempos that felt right. So I had the luxury of just concentrating on trying to put some kind of mood across." JAZZ BAND RELEASES ´PYRAMID SONG`COVER
Norwegian jazz band Atomic released their sophomore album in September on the Jazzland recordings label, it's entitled 'Boom boom' and the album closer is a cover of 'pyramid song'. According to bassist Håker Flaten: "All of us think of Radiohead as one of the most important bands on the contemporary music-scene today. When I heard 'Pyramid Song' I immediately thought it would be great to make a cover of it! It is something with the rhythmic complexity and the sweet melody-line on top which makes the song very interesting. It represents a kind of (complex) simplicity which I really like!!".

COLIN ON TOURING, KIDS AND RADIOHEAD'S FUTURE
There's an interview with Colin Greenwood, published in the 'Scotland of Sunday' today. Some bits from that interview: And here are some clues as to where Radiohead are ‘at’ right now. The guitar-lite, techno-ambient soundscapes Jonny Greenwood created for Bodysong date from the period prior to the recording of Hail To The Thief. They could be the last hurrah for the jazzy atmospherics of the Kid A and Amnesiac days. ‘Idioteque’, meanwhile, bloomed from its rather rigid recording on Amnesiac into a kind of kinetic punk-electronics on Radiohead’s 2000-2001 world tour. It ended up becoming the pivotal track on the live album I Might Be Wrong. This year, the same has been happening with ‘The Gloaming’. "When you’re in the studio you’re focused on certain things and where you’re going," Greenwood says. "Later on, on tour, you realise the other ways that songs can go. So now ‘The Gloaming’ is different every night."
After their UK arena shows this month, the band head off to Europe before winding up for the year on December 5. Colin Greenwood’s baby is due on December 11. Guitarist Ed O’Brien - the only other currently childless member of the band - is also ‘expecting’, in January.
"There’s a lot of pressure on me and Ed to deliver a girl," grins Greenwood, the excitable bass player even more hyper than normal. "Phil [Selway, drummer] has three boys, and Thom and Jonny both have boys. Whoever has the first girl will be very popular with the other band members."
Are Radiohead having baby-induced time off in the New Year? "Yeah, two months, then we go to Japan and Australia. We’ll finally finish in the spring. Then we’ll work on songs. The plan is try to record for the sake of the songs rather than the sake of an album - no deadline or anything, just having fun." [read it in full]

PITCHFORK REVIEWS BODYSONG
Pitchfork reviewed Jonny Greenwood's 'Bodysong' today: If Radiohead's Hail to the Thief suffered from being too scatterbrained, Greenwood's Bodysong-- composed for the nominal British documentary which details the "experience of being human"-- strikes a perfect balance, channeling all his diverse influences into a single multifarious recording. The album's opener, "Moon Trills", marries pensive and melancholy piano chords reminiscent of Radiohead's "Pyramid Song" with swarming frenetic string swells, and weepy Ondes-Martenot accompaniment suggestive of the late French composer Olivier Messiaen's Ondes pieces, while "Splatter" comfortably melds together a frenzied Charles Mingus-inspired bass riff, a DJ Shadow-esque funk break, and Ornette Coleman-styled horn blurts. JONNY ON BODYSONG IN NME
In the latest issue of NME (out in UK stores today) there's an interview with Jonny Greenwood on the Bodysong album, saying that there’s no way he’ll ever leave the band permanently to work on his own material. “You realise quite quickly how good it is to be in a group,” Jonny told NME of recording alone. “Thom (Yorke) was suggesting titles for things and everyone in the band had a two-CD version and helped me whittle it down to half the length. Colin is a bit like me, he’s not great at taking time off. He came and helped with the programming and played some bass. I never really felt alone.” Jonny said that although he enjoyed the experience, his heart will always remain with Radiohead. He added: “I think I’d only do it again if everyone else wanted to stop. The most important stuff we do is with the band and with Thom. It’s clear to me that Radiohead’s always going to be at least five times better because there’s five of us.” [thanks Mandy]

JONNY GREENWOOD INTERVIEW
An interview from the Independent with Jonny Greenwood on the ´Bodysong´soundtrack is available online: Having pitched a few ideas to the director, Greenwood set about creating pieces to fit various sequences with Graeme Stewart, the engineer on the Kid A and Amnesiac sessions. "It was done in the same studio, with all the same instruments lying around, and some of the techniques we learnt for those albums are reproduced here, I'm sure," he says. "There was a lot of music to provide: the film doesn't have any dialogue in it, just music and images for an hour and 20 minutes. It was great not to have to leave room for dialogue, and not to have the musicians playing to click-tracks, just so they could fit in exactly with a car chase or what-ever, which I guess is true of traditional film music. Instead, I could just do three or four minutes of music in whatever mood, and people could play in free time - and occasionally, Simon Pummell would even edit the film to the length of the music, which was a real luxury.
"The trouble with that freedom was that I couldn't really repeat themes, as you can in a traditional film - because obviously, the music for someone giving birth wouldn't sound great being reprised for a shooting or a fight later on. So there's no repetition in it." [read it in full]
